Gaper joey

Alright so I was talking to my friend, who snowboards, from the east coast and he brought up a new term for a "gaper". He told me that Joey is an acceptable term and another kid said he had heard that before. However disagreed and I think it's false. Therefore I enlist your help

So I ask you Newschools:

Is Joey a term for a gaper, or i this guy just straight wrong?

 
yes it was a term before gaper. My dad used to call gapers that with his friends back in the day.
 
a lot of people from new hampshire call them joeys. my girlfriend grew up skiing at loon and she only knows them as joeys, whereas other vermonters call them gapers
 
I wonder if it's an east coast thing. I've never heard it and neither has another kid from Cali. One more word to add to my vocabulary I guess.
 
gaper is referring to the gape between your helmet and goggles. A joey is indeed a gaper (inexperienced skier) when you hail from the east like us. there are also foozers out there you have to look out for. fuckin' losers.. lol
 
I always thought Joey was specific for someone from New York going up north to ski. Maybe it's more general?
 
gaper technically refers to the gap between the goggles and the helmet, and is not necessarily a term to describe novice skiers. a person is only a gaper if he has skin showing above his goggles.

a joey is anyone who is an oblivious, clumbsy, beginner skier who may or may not be a gaper as well.
 
I dunno man I've always used gaper as a word for someone how just sucks at skiing, usually they have a gap but even if they don't I'm pretty sure they are a gaper.
 
i have a racer friend who calls gapers "yetis" which is lulz so i though i'd share

also ive never heard the term joey but it seems adequate
 
Gaps are steezy! As long as no skin is visable...I'm a Joey, is it pronounced gaper or gapper, like a gap? :L
 
Joeys are in fact very real. Joeys are by definition gapers, but not all gapers are joeys. Joeys are from NY, nj, pa, de, md, and possibly a few other states. Joeys are sometimes athletic, and are often pretty successful in other sports. However, there isn't much of a skill transfer to skiing, besides a lack of healthy fear of consequences and an insatiable desire to go as fast as possible. Joeys are often Italian, they often wear crucifixes outside their clothes. They are not afraid to hit jumps and or features that are clearly way above their ability level, and they gauge their skill, success on the slopes by how many black diamonds they ski, and how many times they fall. They are oblivious to any kind of ski etiquette. They yell a lot while skiing and are obnoxious in the lift line. They are far more outspoken then an average gaper, and tend to view skiing and boarding as a joke. They are wildly entertaining.
 
LJ in TC was doing commentary on a snowboarder hitting a rail saying, "Here we observe the gaper in his natural habitat, his name is most likely Joey." I think Joey seems like a good alias for gaper.
 
To add, Joeys can be seen lurking south mountain at mountain creek, the lodge of hunter mountain and falling while getting on the lifts at blue in pa. They go for those fuzzy mohawk/unicorn style helmet decorations, or just a plain gaper gap and hat setup. You'll see them doing the gaper/joey tuck even when going 7mph, and they do that very wide stance turn as they pull in front of the rail you're about to hit.
 
Yup, joey was the first term I heard for gaper I believe here in good ol' Maine, then I heard about gapers on NS. Both can be used
