"Gap Year"

Just wondering if any of you guys have done a gap year where you travel around the world and work. I might be doing it after high school and wanted to know if anyone has son stories or experiences.

ive always wanted to and my mom wants me too as well, but i heard like 85% of the people taht take a gap year dont go back to school so i dunno

i took a couple gap years. i didn't do anything cool except work and get stoned. so I don't know, overall it was a big waste of time and i would be done with school by now if i hand't, but oh well.

might not be accurate but it holds some truth. most people who take "gap years" have a better chance of not going to school. i think its better to finish college then take a year off to do whatever...

read it i said my mom wants me to do it, shes been pushing me to see the world, ive heard the 85% shit from several other people though

i went to europe, thailand, malaysia, laos, vietnam, bali, and australia. i left at the end of the summer after i graduated and was gone for 10 months. hands down, the greatest thing ive ever done for myself. your views on everything will change. it forces you to grow up really fast. dealing with all the problems that arise by yourself and keeping yourself safe. its definitely not for everyone, but if you feel like you might want to go and your parents are cool with it, DO IT. university is always there.

all the poeple i know who took a year off were happy they did it but just make sure that you are doing something worthwhile for that year

chris angel took a year off to see if he could really go somewhere with his "magic," and look where he is now. i'd love to do it, but i'll wait till after college and after i get the skrilla to travel the world.

i think it would be sweet to do,but i also feel i would loose all my motavation to go back to school or whatever..

I'm starting my Gap year soon.

it involves working in St Anton Austria to ski the winter, and possibly NZ as a bum in the summer, or working in France where there's a glacier....yay ski year!

gap year would be a good name for a ski movie though... about some kids going skiing on a gap yer

you should really think about the whole post secondary schooling that. sounds like you are making your discions based too much on what others think... i'm not sure if asking about life advice on NS is a good sign of your wanting to continue schooling. i'm going to have to assume you like to ski, so give it a try for a winter and see what happens. remember that the odds of you having the same "career" till you retire is very small, so not going to post secondary to get some piece of paper for something you arn't that stoked on might be a waste of your best, free'est years. who wants to go into debt and at the end realize that there was another way.

are you losing a lot of money every summer? I've been working this summer and it hasn't been that bad, but just the same old same old, but i want to ski or do something different. I will go to hood next year but i thought of going to portillo or some shit next year too, but I need to make money during the summer, at least come out a little above even so I can pay for college.

im down for that. follow the lives of a few skiers throughout the end of their senior year into their "gap year." god that'd be sick.

hell yeah. i took last semester off from college and have just been working. im moving out to tahoe for the winter to ski every day. I dunno when i will go back to school but im excited too. dont go to college unless your really motivated and know what you wanna do.

skiing + college= mediocre grades and mediocre skiing

I've just found out I don't leave for Austria until 1st December :(

But I have 3 days skiing in October to break up the time between now and then....

in england you can take a gap year in between school and university, you apply for uni before you go on a gap year so that you have something to come back for.

cant see why you wouldn't want to take one, you work for 6 months and then go on holiday for 6 months, i went on a huge surfing trip to aus, nz and fiji. with the strength of the pound then it makes everywhere fucking cheap, even most things in america are the same price in dollars as they are in pounds.

i wouldn't advize any one notg to take a year out, it is the only time in your life that you are likely to have the opportunity

I got home from travelling 3 years ago. since then I was taking finance at university then i switched to try advertising design, im going back to finish marketing and advertising at university next year, I have 2 years left.

I admit, travelling for an entire year does make going back to school really tough. your study skills are kinda out the window a bit. however my study skills in highschool sucked. I just kinda understood what I had to do and got good marks with very little effort. Just put in the effort and you'll be fine.

I highly recommend if you are wanting to go travel do it. Its real easy to take a year off, and never actually leave or cut your trip into a 3 month trip instead of 8,10 or 12 months. I had alot of friends who said they were going in september or october and never left until february or march.

This is how I did it.

When I graduated from highschool I had 2000 in my bank. I bought my plan ticket for the end of august because I found 2 jobs that would give me about 7 grand if i worked hard for 2 months. I spent maybe a 1000 dollars in 2 months on having a decent summer and then i pocketed about 4500. My grandparents gave me 500 euro as a grad/birthday present which was awesome, and I banked about another 500 since my birthday was just before i left and i only asked for cash. My parents bought me my eurorail pass and a bag for my birthday and my australian working holiday maker visa. that visa runs about 100-150 bucks. it allows you to work in australia at any job for 3 months, then you have to quit and get another job. its meant to force you to travel but usually if you like your job and want to stay they'll fire you and give you a different job title.

southeast asia is cheap as shit. 5000 would easily allow you to travel for 6 very very fun months. just to give you an idea of very very cheap, we stayed on this small island in malaysia, our room ran us about 33 cents each a night, meals were 50 cents to 1 dollar for a cheap dish. expensive was about 5 bucks. to take my entire open water diving course cost 75 bucks with 2 free extra dives at the end. europe is fairly expensive if you stay in hostels and eat at resturants and such. however if you look into it, there are camp sites in alot of the cities that are either close to downtown or very close to a city bus to get you around. camping costs about 7euro/night per person. cheap as fuck. Australia is about the same as canada, so its more expensive then the states if your from there. But you can find a job fucking easy. Worse comes to worse go fruit picking in queensland or farther up the coast. the minimum wage was $13.80 when i was there, and your working 10-12 hour days. you bank your cash quick.

and I did leave with one buddy, i then met up with my girlfriend and another friend about 2 months later. then 2 other friends. at the peak there was 10 of us in australia. its rad to meet up or travel with buddies, but i also did 2 months alone, which was just as fun. it definitely helps to start out, and depending on where your going its nice to have a friend as well. australia its not necessary, neither is thailand. it does cut down on the costs in thailand because 2 of your can split a room.

anyways if anyone is serious about it and wants some info just PM me. here is where i've been, italy, greece, spain, france, belgium, amsterdam, england, ireland, malaysia, laos, vietnam, cambodia, thailand, bali, australia, and 3 month surf trip west coast mexico.

i wanna take one but ill jsut stay home and smoke and drink and maybe get a job. when i get outta hi school that is though

DO IT. gap years are all good...people say u get out the way of studying, but a 3 month long summer between high school and uni can do that to you anyway.

I'm on the start of my year out now. Going to South Africa later this month to teach English and sports in a primary school. Gona work in an orphanage aswell. Then I'll go to France to ski all winter!!

i'm coming about of college next year with *only* 20k in loans (thats seriously not bad comparatively) and i'm giving myself gap years until ~26-27-28 to get a career in the ski industry/travel the world/live the life and then if i haven't succeeded i guess i'll get some sort of "normal" job

dude thats fucking awesome, don't know why i never thought of it. i guess the cape is pretty chill, but hood this summer would've been the tits.
