So i have been saving up for some time, my parents and grandparents (grandma is a photographer, who got me my 7D last year for my bday) are behind me so this briefing is here inb4 despite. and anyone else saying im wasting money or extremely spoiled...i will be lucky if i get a lens and some accessories from my parents, this will be from me. I am definitely using my 7D for more cinematography usage than I am photo, but also want to be able to have that beautiful L glass for my more scenic shots that I wasnt getting with my 18-135mm and have more versatility.

So far I have noticed that I enjoy taking portraits, closeups of things outside/inside, and more importantly, scenery...and with that, i've been doing research / readings and watching tut's on everything and think i have narrowed it down to what i want...

Right Now: 7D, canon 50mm 1.4 is all i have (had an accident with my 18-135mm kit lens so instead of spending the $$ to fix it im just saving it for my new lenses / sturdier tripod which was what caused the damage in the first place.

Shopping Cart / Wish List (Hopefully get a majority of these things by time summer starts/ends):

Questions: the 70-200mm f/4L is a steal and i dont think i really need the extra stops with the 2.8L so i'm going to be making that one of my last purchases...do you think the 2.8 would be a better investment in the long run? or should i get a complete diff telephoto up to 300mm, ive shot with this one and have read that its the best bang:buck.
also im debating on a shoulder rig or gunstock for my hdslr and i've looked at these:
RIGS
ZACTUO Striker (would be a bundle with a free viewfinder that i listed above) - http://store.zacuto.com/Striker.html
SIMPLIS Dual DSLR Rig - http://www.cinevate.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=261
GLIDECAM HD2000 - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/579907-REG/Glidecam_HD_2000_HD2000_Stabilizer_System.html
REDROCK Nano RunningMan - http://store.redrockmicro.com/Catalog/Nano/RunningMan

** if i'm just looking for a more stable motion rig for moving, but also want to be able to capture the details as far as pulling/pushing the focus wouldnt a shoulder or gunstock rig be more beneficial? im not looking to take this on the hill just yet so i dont know if i would need to get a glidecam...take a look around the zacuto / simplis sites...the redrock ones seem a bit expensive, especially with that ZACUTO offer with a free $370 value ViewFinder PLUS the rig itself...what do you guys think?
thanks in advance for the help.

My God you are spoiled as fuck. You dont know how to get pictures off your camera, yet you want to drop thousands of dollars on more lenses.

i was inb4 you and im in after you. i told you the dilemma with my cam and i havent had enough time to take much lately, this was lastnight and before that it worked perfectly weeks ago, as well as my card reader on my mac until something happened in my backpack...

next?

I do agree to a certain extent, but I have a feeling, that you as the same as me, is just saying this because were just jealous that we could have parents as helpful as him. I know I sure do.

if i can get a lens and the shotgun videomic or a rig from my parents/grandparents for working and also being supportive of my hobby, then i'll be lucky. the rest is coming out of money i have and will be making. i would love to have these things by Christmas this year...im just asking for some input in the lenses and peripherals and mostly the rigs for filming. if i cant get any helpful responses then ill just take my questions somewhere else. thanks

You know, in any other case ak, you would be right, but this guys a fucking joke.

OP has had 90% of his set up given to him, by 'photograpaher' family members. Yet still comes in here acting like he is deserving and paying for his shit. You call getting a lens and a mic from your parents, on top of the already given camera and lenses, lucky. While I call my dad loaning me a camera while my old camera died, getting lucky. OP is way over spoiled.

i rarely see any contributions coming from you except shit like this. sure im spoiled, but i also have a family that supports anything they know i will be involved in for a long time - like such an expensive hobby as photography. youre what 18? i never see you post any contributions on any thing you have taken. you technically have no room to talk and the fact that you read every fucking thing in MandA and only share input on people you can bash on is pathetic.

im taking this elsewhere, ill let you know how everything works out though thanks.

I bet Im quite a bit older than you if your parents are still buying your toys.

Never post anything Ive taken? I just posted plenty up on flickr, I just didn't need to create the self satisfying threading asking people to "critique my flickr."

you dont get gifts for your birthday or christmas? this was something that was for both. and i have been able to buy one lens since this last christmas and im a college kid, i consider that pretty damn good. considering ill be working 40+hrs a week over the summer and will be needing a majority of this for my work, i will be getting it in advance and was asking for some genuine advice prior to emptying my wallet.

anyone serious about photog knows it is expensive and cant just be purchased all at once. my first post is overwhelming at first glance due to the pricing but like i said, if i can get these by Christmas for this year i would be surprised as shit.

Although I think Despite might be going a little overboard, I think the important thing is that you definitely don't NEED all that stuff. If you can get it, great, but the reason you're making people mad is because you're acting like you deserve it all. If your parents are supportive enough to get you some really cool shit, awesome! Just make sure you get right back on here and show us some pretty damn good cinemetography so you can say, hey fuck you, I do deserve this stuff. Use your gifts to their full advantage and no one will have anything to say.

It also helps your film making if you work your way up to that stuff. It forces you to get a little more creative plus overall just makes you a better person. Knowing that you accomplished making films with maybe not the BEST gear, I dunno thats just my two cents

I like the red rock rigs, but the z finder is the best. Lens wise, the is is really nice on the more expensive 70-200. I would get that I'd you can. Otherwise it looks like you are on the right track.

I really dont understand why people (depsite) is so pissed that your parents have done well for themselves and helped you out. Also if youre planning on buying the majority of this with your own money, i dont see what the problem is??

In response to the OP, I think you've convinced yourself that you need this gear. Just because you or your parents can afford it doesn't mean that you should buy it. You can buy all the gear in the world and and it won't make you a better filmmaker, and in some ways it will just weigh you down. Do yourself a favor and do more filming and less buying.

Your not buying anything with your own money if mommy and daddy still give you a hefty allowance. Im sorry maybe this just the conventionalist in me, but I believe that you should know how to get images off your camera before you go drop thousands of dollars on more gear because you think you "need it."
