Funny thing about Rollerblading and skiing

I was reading an inter view with Jochen Smuda, http://www.rollernews.com/jochen-smuda-interview-3_3842.html, and in the article he mentioned that he had bought some freestyle skis and has started skiing agian. He also mentioned that most rollerbladers had seen shima and haffey skiing. So have we on here right? Wouldn't it be cool if some Pro skiers went to the streets or park with rollerbladings finest?

on a different note...

A couple of months ago I was reading articles about how rollerbladers hate skiing cuz they think its gay and I come onto NS and read how rollerblading is gay when ever it is brought up. Whats with this? Two similar sports calling eachother gay. Sure they have their differences, concrete vs snow. but why try to distance yourself from something that can help your sport out. Skiing can offer rollerbladers something to do in the winter or practice skills. And Rollerblading offering skiers something to do in the winter that really does help your skiing. Rollerblading is really fun to do and the fact that you can look at something and say "I can skate that".

I don't know why I am writing a rollerblading thread right now so close to the season opening.

skiing is lame because snowboading exists.

^wtf dude listen to your rational. theres no real reason for people to hate on rolling. here in nothern michigan our seasons so short that most of the people that ski, blade in the summer. its super fun and takes just as much skill to do some things on skates as it does on skis

that sounds like pretty flawed logic but o well were all entitled to our own opinions legit or not. I just think that rollerblading could never hurt skiing in any way, so why hate on it

rollerblading is ill and it really helps with ur balance and rails. I say that you should Rollerblade in the summer if u are a skier determined to get really good. There is nothing to lose Rollerblading, so y not? It can only help. Unless you break our neck.......

there are very few pro rollers with lame style. It's a sport that has a lot of individuality in it. You may not like a roller who rocks tight pants and striped sweaters but if they're good enough for you to be watching them then they definitely have style, just not an obviously "steezy" style.

but its cement and asphalt not snow...soo much softer in some cases.

whereas in rollerblading, scootering, orskateboarding. you ollie or whaterver the fuck over a few stairs land and like push forward too much WAHBAM! there goes the back of your head on the concrete or perhaps your pewny lil arm goes SNAP! skiing has its injuries too but bailing is easy to recover from if you land awkwardly. i think.

fixthedamnpark you took the words out of my mouth.

If more rollerbladers tried skiing, the level of talent out there would be even more insane than it is now. I had been rollerblading for 8 years when I tried skiing and my entire trick vocabulary transferred over. People need to subdue their bias and give the amalgamation of rollerblading and skiing some slack.

Most of part of the time, people like or dislike things depending on

the level of education they have about these things. I say that because

7-8 years ago I disliked how roller skating was looking. At that time I

was a skateboarder (I still consider myself as one too). But all the

images I got about roller was from my cousin and his friend. They were

beginners and young. So, I kept having the impression that roller is

looking goof. Once in a while I was asking my cousin to try his

rollers, just for the fun of it. Just by trying it, I realised that

this sport is enjoyable. But I was still not liking it and at that time

I was loving skateboarding too much to make the switch.

4 years

ago, I was in in a situation in my life where I lost all my

skateboarding friends (because of drugs, they moved, work, etc..) So, I

was bored not riding anymore. And at that time my cousin was still

roller skating and had a bunch of friends who were doing it often too.

Also, I was 20, my mind was a lot more open than when I was 13 or

around. It made that I did not care anymore about the fact that I was

seriously going to put a pair of skates that I own in my feet. It just

turned out that I loved it. Of course at the beginning I was looking

like a retard on these skates. But I just kept in mind that this was

the normal step of evolution. You start bad and you get better. Now, I

have no shame to say that I love it and even more than skateboarding

(which I still love a lot).

My point is, by living this lifestyle

I discovered it. My new friends show me videos, magazines and we went

to some events. Want to hear something funny? I still hate roller

skating. But wait, just a part of it and this happens with everything

else.. Approximately, I don't like 85% of everything I see from roller.

I judge that most of it is average or poor content or brands. It might

seems that I love few of it but it's not. Why? Because brands I don't

like are loved by an other style of peoples, skaters I don't like are

loved by other and so on... Is this 85% very higher than in else? No,

because my memory reminds me that I was not loving everything from

skateboarding. Only a small percentage was in the part of the things I

was loving.

The morale is : The appreciation of something is made by what you like from it, not from what you hate. So, more you discover things you love about something, more you like this thing and you just learn how to filter out what you dislike.

the thing i really dont like about rollerblading is how style is barely important at all to them, or atleast thats what it seems like.  like its all about doing the most spinny technical insane trick you can nomatter how crappy it looks.  where skiing style is one of the most important aspects of it.  plus we have boards so we can do presses, grabs and stuff that make me like it alot more.

but i have no problem with other peoples sport,  i may not like it, but i think its sweet people do it and if they like it thats all that matters.

^

Have you read NS recently? You just said the opposite of what many

people out there complains about. The - spin to win and the important competition aspect of skiing - has been a burning hot subject in the forum during the

last year.

yeah skiing can get pretty technial, but we still keep alot more style, and its nowhere near as crazy technical as rollerblading can get,  its like tapdancing with spins and crossing feet on rails.

any one who hates on rollerbladers is retarded!!! do a you tube search for b unique, mike murda brian shima or hustling for pennies and get schooled!!!!!! this comming from a "skateboarder"

you should go ahead and remove peace coast from your signiture because you obviously dont love one another...

The same could be said about the hate of skiboarders who legitimately do park. (I realize they are few and far between)

i dont think that they have anything to do with eachother, since i CAN ski, but i CAN'T rollerblade, or iceskate. so they shouldnt be compared.

unlike skiing, i find rollerblading has a lot more individuality.

those people who say rolelrblading all looks abd and its all about doing the craziest tricks what ever, well you probably jsut saw one or two guys skating.

skiing is all about doing fakie 1080s and shit right now, with little different tweaks and grabs what ever.

all the pro rollerbladers doing their own thing, from Stockwell's flowy lines, to Shima droping bombs, to the Kelso brothers making it look like break dancing, they all do differnent tricks, not just style, and they all skate mostly different stuff.

i tend to find it difficult to pass judgment on one's overall life views based on one statement, but perhaps im just not trying hard enough.

let me elaborate on my statement.  i have no problem with rollerbladers.  i spend plenty of time at skateparks with all sorts of folks...rollerbladers, bikers, the occassional scooterer (who i may or may not have a problem with, depending upon where they decide to sit when they need to take breaks from their vigorous scootering activity.  regardless, the lot of us have no problem co-mingling amongst eachother because we're all just there having a good time.

now heres where what you may perceive as my lack of a 'peace coast' lifestyle comes into play, but i assure you, it is nothing to do with the people participating in the sport, but with the sport itself.  i personally find rollerblading to be nothing but a absurd mess of unnecessary spinning on and off of things, contests based the amounts of backflips done in one halfpipe air, and downright embarassing names for tricks like fishbrain, pornstar, and lord know what other kind of combination those kooks have come up with.  i see someone jumping off a 65 foot drop on rollerblades and, sadly, am simply not interested.  i have no problem giving them credit for these things, but, in my mind, they are done with a lack of style that can be seen through something like skateboarding.  i personally do not feel that someone could watch some pro rollerblader (i wont try to hide my ignorance in this department...i know of none beyond those japanese brothers from the x games) slide a flat bar or do a 180 on flat ground and be completely mesmerized based on style.  however, i know that i could watch someone like cale nuske do a 3 flip or kenny reed do a kickflip on flat over and over again.  i guess that that is where the inferiority is created for rollerblading, for me anyway.

if you rollerblade, come to some of the far-from-ideal skateparks in new hampshire, and youll see that i hold no grudge against you simply because of what you have on your feet.  however, i must sadly say that im not going to be overly stoked on the tricks that youre doing.  they just dont interest me.

that is all...i did my best to refute these non-peace coast accusations.

I would like to note that only freestyle rollerbalding is at question here. aerobic, rec-re, speed, championship, lifestyle, liesure, olympic and date blading are all legit so fuck off. some people need an easy way to walk there dog. besides skiing is just like roller blading.

Skateordie

fair enough. I can agree with you on many of those terms. The one thing i will tell you is to go on youtube and look up brian aragon or chris haffey or franky moralez and tell me they dont have amazing style. but i still get what you are saying

free rollin is awesome im startin next year...i dont care if its not mainstream, its like jibbing when theres no snow, which makes it fun.
