my brother is riding across the country next summer and i am planning on riding a small section of it with him. however i dont want some hardcore roadbike because i will never use it after the trip
so im looking for a bike that is:
fun to cruise around onsingle speed not too expensive 500 - 700 range or close to it can take a beating

thanks ns!
oh ,and yes, i do know it will be cumbersome riding a single speed long distances, but i can tough it out

when I am walking I hate cars. When I am driving, i hate pedistrians. But no matter what kind of transportation im using, I hate road bikers.

i dirtjump / freeride and i hate konas freeride line, the geometry feels so fucked up
however, i have read good things about this bike, and you never know, maybe they make a decent roadbike, also i know my local bike shop has it so i know i can try it out before i buy

If you are after a singlespeed, make sure you get a good gear ratio, as if you have it too high, or too low, then you will struggle even harder. Can I suggest a trek bike, as if you are buying new, you can get a good quality one for around 700, and if used, you can buy a really good bike for under that. I would suggest getting carbon forks and maybe triangles, and an aluminium frame, as this is relatively inexpensive and will benefit your riding a little. Here is a great page for you to look athttp://www.roadcycler.com/category/under-700-bikes/Happy Hunting!

I would suggest not a single speed.

you won't be able to keep up, or your brother will be waiting for you. I'd say get it geared, and after the trip, you could convert it to SS if you want.

Are you fucking retarded? You would rather have a shitty Suzuki rather than a quality made, Italian Ducati.
NS these days.

this, the thing to do as far as singlespeeds are concerned is to build up a barn bike, i built mine for lie 50 bucks less wheels, its super fun to cruise around on and puting it together was a blast also.

Wasn't really that funny. Made even less so by you cheerleading yourself.

To the OP: If you're planning on riding a serious distance, you should NOT get a single speed, make sure your bike has a carbon fork, and you should get fitted by someone who knows what they're doing. (Fitting will make your riding much more efficient and comfortable. Your brother could probably even do it.)

You will be miserable on a single speed bike. There are plenty of entry level road bikes in the 500-700 range. Try getting a new 2009 model; you could probably find a good deal. Also, some might disagree with me, but don't waste your money on a Trek. You pay a premium for the brand name. You could get an equally good frame with better components for like 200-300 less.

Considering my size... I could never ride a Ducati and if I were to own a motorcycle I would probably have a Harley. Ducati's though are fucking amazing bikes.

Lambos and Ferraris and Aston Martins and Bentleys are hard to work on too. That doesn't stop people on NS from wanting those.

I couldnt either, im 6ft one and between a cbr, ninja, and gxsr id have to get a gxsr. Feels better

And yeah you got a point there.

Don't know what kind of distance you will be doing, but from the gist of your original post, it seemed like a reasonably high amount of miles.

If this is the case, it would be RETARDED to get a singlespeed.

Singlespeeds have their place, but not on a roadbike that is being used to cover long distances.

.

kona was good 5 years ago, then they started making shitty bikes because people bought into their reputation as a sick company, now they suck and people are starting to realize it

I agree with Charmander, conversions are the way to go. Here is mine: ridden multiple 50+ mile rides on it, including two CO passes. And I keep up OK except on steep hills.
Its awesome to build up (unbuild) your own bike and tweak it just how you like. You get a very close connection, especially if its fixed gear.

Life will be hell on a single speed, and buying a new one for $500-700 is a total waste of money when you could get a $1300ish road bike used for that price if you look. That will be easy to sell for almost what you payed for it, and you might actually enjoy your time riding on the way.

also, for signle speed bikes, its all about the rat bikes, buy nice wheels and build the rest for like 50 bucks, shits so cash

yo i work in a bike store and by the sounds of it masi is for you. check out their website the name of the company is masi. although its gonna be tuff for you to find a new descent quality road bike for the price you want cause these days bikes are expensive.
good luck finding one.http://www.masibikes.com/

that's a pretty sick bike with good components. $1600 new or something though, don't know how much you're looking to spend if you're not going to ride a lot. You can probably find a used bike of nice quality with good components, or there are a bunch of entry-level bikes in the $7-800 range with Sora components that are still nice to ride on.

the masi steel special is completely different than what you've previously said you wanted.
i know nothing about masi geared bikes, but it has some 105...
i think if you're going to go old school racing bike look you might as well buy an 80's/90's bike off kijiji/craigslist. you can get a beautiful bike for under $350 that will serve it's purpose and if you want to go SS, you can with ease.

i realize that, its just apparently i am "going to die" riding on a single speed so i was just seeing what people think based on the feedback ive gotten already
that is a good idea though, im going to check it out

don't go trek i hate whoever said that haha

for $700 you can get a pretty decent bike, wait until the end of the year when the 2011 models come out then buy a 2010 model on super sale. Same deal as with ski gear.

Felt and Fuji both make legit bikes that will drop to your price range on sale.

around that price shoot for shimano tiagra with as many 105 components as you can. It'll likely be a mix.

Or go used, check yakaz.com it lets you search online classifieds all over so you can search all of craigslist in your state instead of going city by city.

if you don't plan to roadbike afterwards then the actual best solution to this is to ask around and borrow a bike. Ask your parents to ask their friends. I was about to drop for a new bike then I ended up with a schwinn paramount with full dura-ace. Albeit it is a 7 speed but it's still an awesome bike.
