Stu - you have a TRV27 with a Death Lens? That's pretty screwed if you ask me. I'd upgrade the camera before the lens, but if it works for you , go for it.

My setup:

Canon GL1

Canon VL-10Li light

Raynox MX-3000Pro 0.3x fisheye (arriving this week)

Lowepro Mini Trekker bag (arriving this week)

2.56GHz P4

512Mb DDR RAM

40Gb HDD (getting an extra 60 or 80Gb soon for footage)

64Mb GeForce 4

15' TFT Monitor

Cheap Firewire card

CD-RW (might get a DVD-RW if the prices start coming down)

Photoshop 7.0

Premiere 6.0

I just started vid editing.

Here is what I have:

Sony Digi8 (yea I know, but it actullay does pretty good) DCR TRV340

UV Filter and Polarization filter

Sony Vaio Computer

2.0 Ghz Pent 4

1.0 GB DDR Ram

60 gig hd

DVD-RW

Firewire aka I-link

Premiere 6.5

Jasc Paint Shop Pro

bambam - i have the deathlense with the 37mm lense front, so it fits. I know i should upgrade my cam, but simply dont have the monry right now. soon.

i know its not about how much money you spend, but i was just asking what other people use to shoot/edit. seeing what people think of what i use. thats all

'el tit zero three, ya gotta check that shit...........ya gotta check that shit el tit' -matt heneghan

Yeah - I know you meant the 37mm (Baby Death), but putting an awesome lens on an average camera just seems like the wrong way to go I think. That said, a shitty lens on a good camera will still look shit. Whatever works for you, that's cool.

I dont agree with alpentalik. This is just a thread to brag about our fancy gadgets.

Sony Handicam 8mm

Gateway

2.2 ghz or something P4

40 gb hard drive i think

15 inch lcd

edit on Windows movie maker 2. The other ones are too hard.

Premiere isnt hard at all. It took me about 1-2 days to figure it out. Just spend some time on it. There is so much you can do with it.

Yeah - raynox are pretty much the best thing you can get unless you want to spend $500+ on a Century Death Lens. I got my Raynox MX-3000PRO today and it's sweet. It says it's a 0.3x but in reality it's 0.4x max, but it still rocks. Putting it straight on my GL1 I get no vignetting at all on my computer. With 2 UV filters it's a bit wider with a littlevignetting on TV (quite a lot on computer). So I don't know if I'll film with the filters on or not.

I got the Lowepro Mini Trekker bag too, and it rules. Looks just like a regular backpack (a little 'boxy' in shape), but it's really well padded and you can customise the divisions nicely. Check it out for sure.

Also, today I got a 27" Sony Trinitron flatscreen (not flatpanel) TV. My dad got it for like $50 from his office.

40' monitor, damn. thats got to be crazy.

it wasnt to to bad for my century deathlense, 270$. not anyhting compared to what it is for the 58mm. but still pretty rough.

farp, windows movie maker 2 is garbage. just read the help files in premier, its not to hard.

does anyone on here use after affects? i downloaded it off the internet, but cant understand it one bit. ittl take some learning

'el tit zero three, ya gotta check that shit...........ya gotta check that shit el tit' -matt heneghan

I know! I have yet to see somebody post that they have 2+ monitors hooked up to their vid card for video editing. That would be sick.

-Randy

WMM2 isn't al that bad, depending on what you're wanting to do with it. It's all I used up until a few months ago, and I got some decent results.

I've just started playing around with Premiere and yes, I can see that it has huge advantages, but it could be a little intimidating to the average user.

One question for you thought Stu - when I capture DV footage, it just captures it as one file. Is there a way to have Premiere split it up into files containing each shot? I've been looking at a program called Scenalyzer, which looks like it will do that for me, but if Premiere could do it itself, that would be better. If Premiere can't do this, then why not? Surely having each shot as a seperate file is fundamental to non-linear editing.

file>capture>movie capture. saves each clip you capture into its own individual file.

snow - dual monitors are pretty standard. pretty much essential if your doing a big project. i dont have one yet because, i just built my sysem a month ago, and im waiting for the college to hook me up cheap. you should definately look into getting that man.

'el tit zero three, ya gotta check that shit...........ya gotta check that shit el tit' -matt heneghan

Stu: I don't thin kyou understand me. Say you have a whole hour-long tape of footage, comprising of 10 second shots (so about 300 shots). Is there a way to press a button and have 300 files created automatically?

With Batch Capture, you have to specify the start/stop of each clip manually (at least I think so).

I downloaded Scenalyzer and it did exactly what I was looking for, so that's cool. Still, ifthere is a way to do it in Premiere, I'd like to know about it.

that would be extremely convenient. i dont think its posible with premier though. i have seen it on imovie, the onlygood feature it offers. looks like youll have to caoture nming eah clip individual, i know its a pain in the ass but thats how you gotta do it.

'el tit zero three, ya gotta check that shit...........ya gotta check that shit el tit' -matt heneghan

Hmm, that seems pretty strange that Premiere doesn't offer that function, since I'd imagine most people want to manipulate each shot individually.

You should check out Scenalyzer - I tried it out and it works great. Captures DV and splits it into individual shots by analyzing the time codes. The trial version inserts a logo every ten seconds or so, but I found a key generator for it easily.

just remember to press end search-button after filming of each clip otherwise that timecode thing gets fucked up and so does that splitting thing.

that's what i understood.

to the guy who started the topic:

definiatly go for another 512mb of RAM. you'll notice a difference. try overclocking the athlon, too, you can get some better performance. get a 2nd harddrive and setup a RAID 0 array. dvd burner is good, too.

i now theres lots i can do to improve my system, but just dont have the money. another 512 is top priority right now, the second HD and dvd burner can wait until i really need it. im not sure i have the knowledge to overclock it, so im not gonna get into that quite yet.

what do YOU have for a system, lighting farts?

'el tit zero three, ya gotta check that shit...........ya gotta check that shit el tit' -matt heneghan

dual 15 inch lcd would be amazing. lcd's arent for dualing though, soooo expensice. just get a cheap flat crt's it works just as well.

'el tit zero three, ya gotta check that shit...........ya gotta check that shit el tit' -matt heneghan

I really don't think anything over 15' is necessary. I run everything full-screen (1024x768 on a 15' TFT) (or near enough), and find it awkward if it's any smaller. So to run two programs side-by-side I'd need at least a 25' monitor I think, which isn't really going to happen, is it? Dual 15' would be really sweet though. Would you need a higher spec graphics card for that?

BamBam: to use two monitors you must have a gfx card with a dualmonitor support. ie. matrox's DualHead cards are good. i've got the old matrox G400 dualhead. i've done some work on two monitors and it really kicks ass. but it is pain in the ass if the monitors aren't the same size.

yea my friends left monitor is fucked, and he cant open shit or go online cause everything is over there and its just black, dont double up just get one big one.

I kind of like 6.5 but i have played around with Pro a lot. Im sure it has its advantages. I liked A/B editting(vs. single-tack but Pro doesnt have it(or at least havnt found it yet) I think they tried to simplify it, but 6.5 wasnt that hard to understand. It's all preference i guess.
