The best thing to do is buy your own waxing gear and wax yourself. You can also get an edge bevel tool to keep your edges sharp and free of burrs. The total cost for a full tune is usually around $30. Peep www.purlracing.com and get the pro kit. It comes with everything you need to wax your skis all season long and it costs about $30. Obviously you also need an Iron ($20 at Home Depot) and you can get an edge tool for about $20 as well. Total cost, around $70. Sounds like a lot, but you can keep your gear in good shape for the next few seasons. Extra wax is cheap and a brick should last a while.

I wax my skis every 2-3 weeks (every 10 days of riding) to keep them in prime condition.

so this would include waxing, base work, and edge work at a shop. if that is what you get with a tune how often should i do this, because i am worried if i do it myself i will mess it up.

Ideally you should wax every three days skiing. But I have been known not to wax, and getting to the point where the snow sticks to the bottom of your skis.

I like to have my skis consistent, and so I wax as much as posible. I try and de-burr as much as posible by using a diamond stone. I only sharpen my edges when there really need it as excessive sharpening will file away your edges to nothing.

If I have any core shots, I p-tex straight away. And I beleive you should only base grind a ski 3-4 times in is life. Other wise the base becomes to thin and prone to core shots. I enjoy tuning my gear and I have access to good tools, so keep my gear in tip top condition. There is no point spending be bucks on gear if you dont tune, and cant get maxium performance out of it.

to the kid who spoke of stonegrinding: you are wrong. stone grinding is not to 'fix' your base. it is for putting a texture/pattern on your base to channel water in a more efficient manner.

secondly, most shops charge something along these lines (at least the 3 shops i worked at)

sharpen and wax - $20

basic tune/ptex sharpen wax stone grind - $30-$40

'custom or racing tune'/ptex sharpen (by hand) wax (with the good stuff) $50-$100+ averaging $60. for the $100+ tunes i'll stone file the edges with wet stones and use hella expensive wax and wax in layer.

oh yea.... wax every 3-5 days on snow and sharpen every 10-15 depending on preferance. obviously if you require high performance skis (like if you plan on slamming gates) wax every day and keep your edges in top shape. if you are just a park rat, you can afford to slack alot of maintaining your shit. just get it sharpened like twice a year and waxed every 8-10 days.

Like everyone else says, wax at every 2-3 days out. Edges, in my opinion should be 7-10 days, more if you tend to bash 'em, less if you ride powder all the time.

Base grinds are important to. they keep the skis sliding smooth.

The places I go charge $30CAD for sharpen, wax and small ptex. figure $50-70 for the above and a base grind.
