Full Frame Canon 1Ds? or 5D mk1

I just picked up a 1Ds with an 85mm f1.8 last night. for a killer price basically got the lens for free!!

now i know this cameras really old but it's full frame and i bought it for portraits with the lens. i guess my question should be whether or not to sell the 1Ds and buy a 5D mk1 which is far better known to be a good camera or whether it's worth keeping at all

 
The 5dmk1 is 12.8MP while the 1dsmk1 is 11.4MP and they both shoot around 3fps.

Honestly, they'll probably be about the same. The only real advantage to newer dslr is better ISO performance and more fps continuous shooting. If anything, a 1dmk2 would be a good choice but then its a 1.3x crop and then you might as well save up for a new dslr, IMO.

I'm sure more dedicated photos guys will chime in, the 5dmk1 is praised as one of the best canon photo cams, havent heard a ton about the 1dsmk1.
 
The 5dc (classic as it's called now) is definitely a good camera. I mean you already have the 1Ds so you might as well shoot it?
 
If it were me personally I would keep the current setup until I could move to a 5dmkii. I know you didn't list that as a possibility but the other options don't seem like a justifiable upgrade to me as your current option is about the same... about. I guess just to me a small step up doesn't seem worth my time. But this is my opinion I guarantee someone will disagree.
 
The 1Ds1 is totally fine. I like mine. Sure, it's slow and the flash sync isn't fast... the screen isn't great, and it weighs a bunch, but it's no worse than any other gripped DSLR that has even a trace of metal construction. The sensor isn't THAT much worse than the 5dc

I like the AF on it better too. Pretty damn accurate. Paired with an 85, that camera is great for portraits... even if you can't get as nice of photos as you might with film, it's convenient at least.

Don't try to trade it for a 5Dc, unless somebody actually offers.. Maybe just use it until you can get a 5Dii or better?
 
5dc makes the nicest files of any canon dslr. Do a google search and you will find other people talking about them. There is something special about the way that sensor renders colors and tones. Many people (my self included) think it makes a better raw file then a 5d2 or 5d3 (disregarding the megapixel difference). It can't focus for shit other then dead center point on one shot. The body is plastic, tho I dropped mine on river rocks a time or 2 and never had an issue. It is a very bare bones camera, no fancy do-dads, just a small black body that makes the nicest image I have ever seen from a canon system.

The 1ds is older and a lot worse, most are really beat these days.
 
So how the hell would he even trade a 1Ds1 for a 5Dc?

Regardless of how nice a 5D is, the 1Ds is still pretty sweet - Full weather sealing, Metal construction, and an AF system that actually works well. Sure, the 5D takes absolutely awesome photos, but having used both cameras fairly extensively, they both take pictures, and both take them well. If I had to choose between the two, I'd take the 5D on weight alone, much less the newer processor, and everything.. but since this guy already has a 1Ds, I don't see the point in switching.

 
On the subject, how is the weather sealing on the 5dc? what modern cameras could you compare it to? Really I just need snow and light amounts of water to stay out. Also, what about the weather sealing on the 10d-50d?
 
IDK but I had my 5dc and L's out on many a fucking blizzard days in the mountains and backcountry, never had a single issue.
 
I don't think it's actually "weather sealed at all" or at least not like the 1D/7D kinda sealing. it's just made well and tight, and isn't likely to be weather damaged unless torrential downpour or Arabian duststorm occurs... and even then it's probably fine in some cases.

the 10D-50D are pretty solid as well. Probably no worse than the 5Dc.
