Fucked up Knees, along with ASS and TITTIES!

So last year in late December, I tore my ACL and my lateral meniscus, my parents and I decided that being young and still having a lot of ski talent I would go through with surgery. I went under the knife on February 1st and started up PT a week later. I took PT super seriously up until about the end of the fourth month when family, work, and travel plans got in the way. I received by brace on August 1st and was supposed to head out to Hood on July 29th, but it didn't come in time. I was alright with that seeing as ski season is only a few months away and I was only missing a week of skiing. Up until about a week, things were going great and then my ACL graft failed. MRI confirmed that again I have a full tear of my ACL and significant damage to both of my meniscus's. I meet with my doctor this coming Monday to discuss more in detail and decide what my next step is from hear.

So NS, I am asking your opinion, I am 17 years young, missed out on last season and will miss out on this one if I go in for surgery again. Before you ask the question well if you get surgery now you can ski later in the year, right? The answer to that is no. the earliest surgery could be performed would be early October, leaving 6 months to heal (May) before I could ski again. Should I get the surgery, go through hell all over again, and miss out on a season? Or do I opt to not get surgery and try to ski super super mellow every other weekend or so? I need your help Dr. NS

And as promised, ass and titties!

thanks for the ass and titties. to answer your question, i always said if i were to tear a knee I would get surgery ASAP. I'd rather be able to ski again as hard as possible as quickly as possible so that's how i have seen it.

A friend of mine has torn both knees, two years apart. On the first one, he got surgery in august and couldnt ski really at all until january, even then he was skiing very mellowly. The second time he got surgery asap (beginning of may) and was skiing early the next season. this to me seemed like the way to do it.

given your position of just coming off surgery and going through all the bullshit is a bit different and being able to ski all this winter very carefully could be nice.

i'd say just get it done though, so you dont have to worry about it down the road. whatever you do, make sure you stay on that rehab game. if you get surgery in october and commit to the healing process by the time next season rolls around you'll be stronger than you started.

1. inb4 didn't read lol

2. thanks for promised ass and titties

3. i would get surgery now and really commit to PT afterwards. That way you can still enjoy next summer too after having a season without skiing which will obviously suck. If you go skiing you are going to be tempted to push it a little more and more and eventually it will be too much and you will injure it worse. its not worth it. just take the hell season off and come back next year stronger than ever

that is some nice ass and titties

get that surgery shit done as soon as you can. one season of mellow riding isn't worth having fucked up knees.

Get surgery and above all stay positive. You will come back stronger than ever and continue to shred and progress and have a blast of a time on the mountain for many years. You are young, don't think that your park days are over once you hit 22 years old, you will continue to shred into your 30s and even 40s. I know alot of sick skiers and snowboarders in their 30s who are continuing to progress and having a blast at it. I'd say almost half of all pro skiers have come back from serious injury. Good luck man, and enjoy life.

I would go for the surgery. If you don't, and go back out to ski all mellow, you'll only want to hit rails and go ham, and you'll know you can't.

That was me when I tried to ski like 2 months after breaking my foot. It's not a fun time. Heal up properly and throw down when you're ready.

Well if you don't get surgery you are going to be missing quite a few seasons / or you will put your knee at very high risk.

I'm 3+ months out on my second ACL in the same knee, did the meniscus on both sides as well. It is a 9+ month recovery the second time, probably at least a year for you since your graft failed. Sorry to break it to you but you won't be seeing any ski time for a while.

Also, due to my meniscus I could not put any weight on my knee for the first month. Being on crutches for that long was terrible, thank god that's over. I never want to do that again. Be easy on your knees man and good luck.

thanks for all the feedback guys! +K to everyone and I will keep you posted as to the status of my knee. By the way, do you know of anyone currently skiing with a torn ACL? Would it be a bad decision to ski in late February/March and get surgery like June?

I tore my ACL in December aswell, and was skiing 3 days later just mellow, got my surgery in April, so I am at 5 months now, ill be good to ski by the time season rolls up. how did you graft fail, didnt do enough physio or what? , my knee feels strong except it cracks sometimes and it kind of hurts to bend back all the way, cant stretch it someways without pain. doctor said it is because of a tight graft.

you can ski without an acl but run the risk of damaging the rest of the ligaments in your knee

heres my friend skiing without an cal, he said it only hurt when he landed forward on jumps

Damm...that sucks man. I'm sorry. Stories like these give me the chills. I just turned 30 and haven't torn anything...knock on wood. Very lucky....I almost tore my lcl last season at snowbird, sprained slightly and that hurt a decent amount, cant imagine tearing my acl.....vibes

I did that. Blew it first week of February, but it didn't really swell up/bruise or bother me too much. I skied (filmed) on it the next two days and then continued to ride the rest of the season (hitting decently big jumps and no hold out on rails) until I decided to go to the doc to get it checked out. Had surgery July 2 and am now 2 months into recovery. Hoping to be skiing by January

please, please, please, get a cadaver acl. there are so many horror stories about people having grafts fail, tendonitis (i know this one well), and all kinds of other issues with grafts from their own body. on the other hand, i have never heard someone personally with a bad cadaver procedure. your recovery time is quicker, and nowadays they put the replacement ligaments through such intense testing that the only bad part is the miniscule chance your body rejects it. ask zach davison, he has cadaver acls in both knees and skied professionally for a while afterwards, doesn't even wear braces.

Sorry to hear about that. In my opinion, you should just ski mellow and get surgery later in the season so at least you get a little bit of skiing in before you have to stop. Good luck.

I tore my acl and i think not getting the surgery is a huge mistake. skiing wont be that fun if you have to take it easy and your knee will hurt really bad. you might also make it worse and fuck yourself for your whole life. just dont be an idiot, take another season off and know that this way youll make sure you can ski for the rest of your life.

How about doing what Kaya did? she got a synthetic ACL that lasts only 10 years (surgery required again then) but takes half the amount of time to heal

Sucks to hear about the failed graft.

I tore my ACL a few years ago and it was hell to get back. I was lucky enough that my work had a gym in the office so I was able to workout on lunch everyday. If I were you, as much as it sucks, I would get the surgery. Remember, that your ACL isn't just for skiing, it's for almost every active activity. You're 17 and I'm sure you will want to be able to be active as you get older and getting the surgery will allow you to do that. I ski, play hockey, squash, softball, run etc.

For me, I had to wait about 6 months from my tear before I got surgery and it got to a new "normal". I felt like I could do everything, albeit with some pain in some positions. I even skied a few times on the torn knee. The problem there is that it's false confidence. I remember that a week before my surgery date I was warming up for a beer league softball game when I planted my left leg to throw the ball I my knee just gave out. No pain, it just couldn't support my actions.

In short, get the surgery, do the rehab, get a brace and before you ski (even though you'll want to), get approval from your PT that you are good to go.

get it fixed asap. don't risk it for just a mellow season. the last thing you want is to never be able to ski again because you risked it at such a young age. i know missing another season seems like an eternity now, but compared to the rest of your life, it's fucking nothing...

Surgery. I feel you man I got mine on Feb 2nd and I can completely understand not wanting it done again, but if you face the facts, in the long run you are WAY better off with the surgery, avoiding risks of arthritis and general instability of the knee. I tore mine the second day of the season and it sucked, but I lived through it and there are better things ahead. Good luck man, PM me if you wanna talk.

Try to ski man. Had a miniscus surgery in November and when they were in there found out my acl was all the way torn. I skied the whole season learning that when you land switch on everything it doesn't hurt. Ended up getting the acl surgery in April and came back the next season strong. I was 16 at the time of this. Good luck man. And if your gonna try to ride make sure you work out a lot on bikes and other closed circuit work outs to improve the muscles around the knee. Hope this helps

My friend and I both tore our ACL's and meniscus's the same season. I got surgery immediately, he skied the rest of the season taking it easy before getting his done.

My knee feels as good as it ever did ( however I did PT every day rigorously for 6 months )

while his knee is constantly bothering him, even after surgery and rehab

My advice would be to get the surgery, your future self will thank you.

Here's the latest update. Went to the doctor last week and said that ACL and meniscus surgery should be taken but I can risk this season if I take it super mellow. He said that it all depends on how it's feeling and everyday is different. Some days it feels solid and no pain, other days it will give me slight pain but nothing I can't deal with. They had me scheduled for next Friday but I've changed that to mid-October, unless I change my mind yet again. At the moment, it feels like I could ski if i'm super mellow and just go maybe once or twice a week and really listen to my body. Thank you guys for all the feedback and advice, it's really a tough decision and mentally I'm torn apart. +K to all responses as well.
