Hey Guys,

Just got back to my hotel room after being in Giant’s stadium for the

Icer Air big air. The thing was huge…the jump was about 100 feet off

the ground, and the takeoff was probably about 180 feet up. Jurassic 5

played, along with Ladytron and they were both sick. There was probably

20 thousand people there, the biggest crowd I’ve ever seen for a shred

contest.

BUT …..the contest organizers forgot to pay attention to a few details…

this led to a lot of wobblies in the air, and Bev Vermullier (my

bonfire team mate), fell into the DEATH gap….30 foot drop to a net,

followed by another 70 feet of the ground. I’m actually surprised that

the net saved her because it didn’t look too comforting…it seemed as

though them putting the net up was an afterthought. Thank goodness they

had it up there because its most certain that she would have died if it

wasn’t there. PHEW!!! We love you Bev!

Also, the landing wasn’t wide enough so people were forced to fall down

the wooden stairs, and I think one of the skier girls may have broken a

rib tumbling down them.

Travis Rice took top honors (b/s 7 and rodeo 9), Andreas Wiig 2nd (bs rodeo 7 or 9?), Danny Kass (b/s 900).

This thing was the sketchiest thing I’ve seen in awhile. It was

wierd seeing Travis say that he tried to do a backside 3, and ended up

doing a sketchy 180 in the air. At least after awhile, they got used to

the kinks, and threw down…that’s natural talent for ya!

For the girls, the compression was just too much. Jamie Anderson

ended up doing a half backflip just past the knuckle so she was

alright, Lori did a frontflip (by accident) from getting bucked and

then Bev fell into the death gap. Hana Beaman, myself, Tara Dakides,

Marie France Roy all backed out because we just weren’t feeling it.

Rightfullly so! Especially since more than 1/2 the dudes couldn’t clear

it and were also opting out. That was a bit disappointing though for me

because I think it would have been really fun to hit a jump in front of

that many people. I just wish these big air organizers would get it

right, so we could show people some sick shit!~ Ah well… next time,

right?!

Anyway, I’m going out to party with everyone tonight. Another night at the W in San Fransisco! yeahhhhh

peace!

So for those of you saying the athletes didn't mind, start reading up and realising.

The net was an AFTERTHOUGHT?!?!?!?!

I dont care how fucking great this is for the sport; when the organizers didnt even think of a net for that gap, they need to be taken out back and shot. Thats the stupid fucking idea I have even heard.

just wow...

i cant believe they built that gap in the first place... what was it for pure shock value??? look theyre jumping over an 80 foot fall to deaaaath ooooh halloweeeney. watch our athletes perform circus acts, cheat death, see the worlds dumbest competition!

The jump isn't smaller than before the accident. I'm glad no one got hurt that day when the jumped crashed, then that would have been the end of this super event.

The only thing this has to do with the icer jump is, that they hopefully learn from their mistakes, as did the organizers of the freestyle.ch

dr event isch ja guet u rächt aber das huere scheiss judgement isch eifach nume lächerlech..si heisech scho letzt jahr blamiert vo di meiste amis im halb final usekeit si !!!!!!!!!

yeah...i didn't have to shell out any money to go watch some riders. And it sure cost alot less then renting a baseball field. I think im gonna put my two pennies in here. They schould have it like they had it last year, but with more snow, and a better/safer jump. You don't have to make this fucking HUGE retard show for people to notice the sport. Shut down a street, have people walk by, and people will notice.

I think that would suck. Its a great Idea, but it just needs A LOT more planning, and ya, safety of the athletes should be number one priority.

ok you fags, dont u realize ur not gona get quality jumpmade from fucking plywood and imported snow... you really think its lal mosleys fault.. your try making a better jump, and its a ballbark not a ski moutain...

Alright guys, to clear up the whole "Why didnt they have it in the street again?" question, the reason is simple.

SF streets are super busy, and super narrow. They barely fit 5000 people last year.. seriously, it was as packed as a goddamn Incubus concert.. and it was on a thursday or something..

This event actually was held on a saturday, and had about 5 times as many people show up. They also couldnt really hold a huge J5 concert like they did if they held it in the streets. They also had TONS of booths from all the ski and board companies.. well.. most of them.. and just tons of free stuff giveaways. Theyc couldnt do that on narrow streets.

Also, theyre were way too many complaints last year by the residents on that part of filmore street... bitchy old farty yuppie people dude.. I would be stoked if they were holding a fucking air contest in front of my flat! that would be sickkkK!

They almost had to move the contest to Oakland or Berkeley too.. which still would have been sick, because it would have been on Cal Campus.. which would be equally gnar.

Eventually Gavin Newsome or whatever the SF mayor is was able to get the event processed well, and they rescheduled the thing and got it to run well... it was just mad hot out and the snow melted hardcore quick.

the video that the one local news station had showed J mo talking with the news dude about the net thing. He said they had planned to have it in beforehand but didnt get to putting it up until shortly before the jumping began.

if you're making a jump liek this, and you know you're going to create a super-extreme death gap for those who come up short....WHY THE FUCK DON'T YOU OVERCOMPENSATE FOR SPEED ENGINEER IT SO RIDERS WILL OVERSHOOT. that way if the snow gets slushy/slow it will still work and RIDERS CAN JUST START DROPPING IN FROM HALFWAY DOWN TEH RAMP AND THE PROBLEM IS SOLVED. instead of solving a lack of speed problem by getting pole-whipped in.

at first i was like "whatever it wasn't that bad," but the more i think about this the more retarded it gets. especialy for the snowboarders....a bunch of them made the landing by half a snowboards length...jesus christ

Dave, I completely disagree. Events like this can, and should be held to a higher standard. When people -that many people - show up and they see a poorly executed event, with a complete lack of safety standards it is inexcusable. The ramifications are huge: sponsors' risk managers scream bloody murder and next year there is no money. Once major sponsors get scared - as they should be by this event - then the sport gets set back years. All the hard work by athletes, event organizers and people who truly care about the sport goes down the drain, and everyone has to start from ground zero. Ask yourself this: What if someone had died there? Do you think that would advance our sport? Be in our interest?

This was a very poorly executed event, with a complete disregard for basic safety proceedures. Very ugly, very bad and very unhelpful.

It's sad, because the same shit happened a year ago. The event planners learned NOTHING? They don't deserve to do another event again, unless they bring in some people who know how to run events, and run them safely.

That's my $0.02 on the matter. And no, I wasn't there, just speaking from the reports I've heard from those who were.

Ohhh yea Sammy's switch 9 was fuckin ill why the fuck didnt he win. fuck icer air again! stay the fuck out of our sport

I just got my report and pics into Ethan. It should be up soon. I talked to almost all of the skiers, they were ticked. Jon was cussing, I told him he needed to give them the drawings of his jump and build it out of scaffolding. In the morning everyone just stood around the lip and tranny, going down from about 5 feet up to get the feel. I don't know how they got Tae to guinea that sucker. $$$

BOTTOM LINE it was a sweet event, but the jump looked like it was built by a crackhead from the tenderloin. Too iffy.

So the jump was pretty sketchy. A lot of consequences. But overall, the event was mainstream and media was all over it. The skiers represented our sport well (seeing as how transition and speed are a lot easier to deal with four edges). Johnny does a great job getting skiing out to people who would otherwise never see it. This event captured a huge audience and will help publisize the sport. It was successful in that regard. Johnny did a great job helping us athlete's out and couldn't have been more appreciative for us to go through with the contest and make things happen. A multi million dollar event put on in the Giants ball park is a huge deal. It's the start of something new and they will learn from mistakes to make things better in the future, but there is talk of taking this to New York and Chicago in the future, which again is publicity needed to help progress our sport and potentially get us into the Olympics. So I give props to everyone who put this thing on. And, J Mo is a super nice guy.

my friend just called me as i was reading this thread and hes lie guess what i did. i had no idea so hes like watched a bunch opf people ski in san fransisco (he livs in palo alto, about 1/2 hr away) i was like o shi tyou went to icer air?! he videoed the whole thing and got me a bunch of autographerd posters.. pretty fuckin sweet. that set up does look sketchy as fuck tho

ok i just saw the footage and what the fuck were they thinking?!! both this and booters ball werent pushing boundaries they were just stupid. its about time people started taking jon olssons approach and making jumps that are huge but that u cant die in. kayas fall was fuckin sketch that was ridiculous.

If you look at the net, it's possible that you could come up short and fly into the scafolding to your death and the net would do nothing. For the net to work you have to miss the speed by a lot and fall 'down' into it. If you barely come up short you would fly down into the scafolding and die.
