Dear lord... I stop cheking this for 40 posts or so, and it turns into a nationalistic witch-hunt. Granted, this was a fairly dumb and rather insensitive thing to say as far as the troops go, but jesus, some of you people overreact wildly. It's a job, guys. It's necessary, sure, but not so more than teaching highschool is necessary. Probably less so. There's no need to deify the army. There are oustanding performers (heroes, call them what you will) in the army, and in most walks of life. But there's nothing glorious about dying for your country. The sooner everyone figures that out, the better... people are going out there, fighting and dying, for the wrong reasons. I honestly believe that an attitude adjustment here could save lives. This isn't the movies.

I stand by my earlier statement, this thread is downright idiotic, but it didn't have to be a rallying cry for every 'You're against the troops, we should hypocritically shoot you for expressing the opinion that so many of our hacneyed catchphrases SWEAR we're here to protect' jackass who happens to see an outlet for the rage he's developed from life being far too confusing for him to handle. It's frightening how you people go into a state of blind flag-waving, passionate ultranationalism whenever anyone questions your country. Seriously, call the kid an idiot and leave it at that. So equating the army with freedom isn't necessarily all that accurate. That was his point. Saying 'Oh, that'll never happen' misses that point. See what I'm getting at?

I enjoy debating, not ragging on people. Ridicule is usually a waste of time and often falls on deaf ears. I avoid it when possible, unless I feel it is necessary. I only post in threads like this if I have a point that I feel is urgent to present. It is no secret indeed that people like to do a bit of 'ass ridding'. Sometimes, however, it can be unnecessary.

Did you click the link? It amounts to an attitude problem. Kids going off to war trying to be heroes... that's not why we have an army. It's not for glory, not for heroism, it's a last resort to defend the people from harm. If you're killing enemy troops, you should be doing it for that reason, not because you're 'fighting for the honour of the great US of A'. You see some respect for firemen, and from time to time for cops, but nothing NEAR the almost worshipful reverence people have for the great and honourable troops. I think it contributes to war as a means, and I think it needs to be stopped. War is not some gand crusade for the glory of your country, it is a horrible, awful, thing by which thousands of innocent men, women and children suffer and die, by which soldiers lose limbs, mothers and fathers lose their sons and daughters, and it is not something to be played up. A soldier lost in combat is a real person, a person to be grieved for, not an ideal to be praised. Everyone seems to want to hide from the ugly truth of what war really means by putting up a golden front of impersonality. That attitude is a stark denial of the humanity of the soldiers, the people they fight for, and the reason wars should be fought. Read the link. It basically sums up my position on this subject.

Just to clarify one point: the attitude I'm opposing here ignores the soldiers as people because it groups them under the ideal title of 'hero'. They're all represented as a noble, golden statue with no individual qualities. They were soldiers, and that's all we need to know. Now hold your hand up and salute. It's a cop out, and it's the worst insult I can think of for these troops. No one wants to face the truth, and that doesn't constitute respect for these people. It constitutes a vicious cycle by which more of them die needlessly, and are enshrined without any recognition for who they were.
