FUCK "Royalty-Free" and "Copy Write-Free" MUSIC

I remember a time when an edit really showcased personality. Not just the skiers involved, but the film makers themselves. Maybe I've spent too much of my life on this website, but I feel as if some of the filmers are taking a shortcut that ultimately weakens their work...Hats off to Shane McFalls for establishing Traveling Circus as one of the most entertaining, (and longest running) series on NS. A decade of fucked up skiing aside, Shane took the time to promote his own musical tastes and support a selection of self-releasing, independent groups, mostly off bandcamp.com. And as they teach you in school, when you write an essay, any outside work was credited. He made a point to credit every single artist, one by one, at the end of every single episode. Honestly, Shane and TC are directly responsible for a good chunk of my musical taste growing up. I'm afraid kids aren't getting that same experience I grew up with. Discovering new music, looking up a specific song... even if it was a goofy ass "Float On" remix in clown*school's "FUCK", it didn't matter. The videos had character. Now, personality is becoming more and more scarce in the films and edits posted. And I'm not saying everyone is this way, but when you see/hear it, it's plain as the day is long. All the monotonous and poorly crafted hip-hop beats have got to stop. Quit discounting your work and the hard work of the athletes by taking shortcuts just to get the edit online faster, it's lazy. Plain and simple.

I think part of the issue is that the Youtube bots automatically pick up any licensed music and throw a copyright violation at you even if you credit the artist at the end.

While I agree with you that a lot of the new edits have copyright free music, I disagree with you on why its done.

The premise of your argument appears to be that editors are getting lazier and that is why they are using royalty free music in their work. I dont think this is true.

In modern society copyright is becoming an issue that is at the forefront for editors. Platforms such as youtube, vimeo, and instagram now tag and remove videos that have copyrighted works (such as songs), regardless of whether credit was given. There are only three ways to avoid this (A) get a license to use the work (B) create the work yourself; or (C) use copyright free music where a license is implied and granted to all users.

It isn't laziness, its compliance with copyright law.

I’m sure you understand that the people on ns cant afford to buy the rights of popular music so they can throw them in a 3 minute park edit...prettt whack of you to call it laziness when they’re just abiding by the laws so that their content is able to be viewed.

But I do agree that copyright free music sucks a whole bag of dicks. and it really takes away from the edit, sometimes making it unwatchable. Music is like 60% of what makes an edit good in my eyes.

As long as i continue to make edits, i'm probably going to continue using rap songs for a significant number of my videos. I don't find it "monotonous" and i don't see why it has "got to stop." I wouldn't be staying true to my own musical tastes if I didn't use any rap music in any of my edits, and i think many others feel the same way.

I think he's talking about the edits that just use the beat, not rap

Threads for days- Shane and TC definetely had a bug impact on my music tastes as well and I've discovered a good amount of artists from those videos too- I even spent over a year after I heard TELE//VISIONS for the first time trying to find out who tf they were, and then one day there they were in a TC video 5.something I believe.

It's not laziness, I use music I have rights to because otherwise our parent company could get sued, which is not how a business operates. I spend more time searching for decent songs to use than I do putting together the cut, just sayin. Tons of people do the same because they are making money off their work and if it gets taken down, then you're not delivering your client a proper piece of content.

Youtube/vimeo/instagram/facebook will all flag popular songs and delete your video and after a certain number of incidents, they can terminate any account. You know how fucked a business would be without their social channels? It's the only way to access their audience and advertise.

Plenty of filmers use songs they don't have the rights to, I see it daily on NS, but yeah like I can't use cool songs anymore, sorry bruh.

I always support local artists and underground bandcamp artists too, fuck people who listen to mainstream music and don't dig to find the good stuff

This! Finding the right music for an edit where you don't have to be afraid to get sued takes A LOT of time and is often super frustrating. Using a song that I love and therefore listening to a lot would be super easy.

OP should grow up and get some knowledge about what can happen if you violate copyright of others. There are a lot of reasons why editors don't use "real" songs anymore but laziness is definitely NOT one of them!

Im honestly surprised Banged Up is still online. The soundtrack was so dope and I remember thinking like 5 minutes in "oh this is gunna get taken down for sure". I think Jiberish has some cash but not THAT much.

My youtube account got deleted after posting too many edits with songs I didn't have the rights to. So my 400 meme video playlist got delete as well.

@eheath your edits are trash, fuck it, whether or not you follow of copywrite lawor not , your shits is sooooooo lame now. fuck all of it.

While I enjoy poking fun at eheath, as this is the Internet after all, Evan is one of the best filmers in skiing. You are wrong. He’s done more for the sport and jumpstarted more kids careers with his edits than you will ever contribute to skiing.

I’m not a huge fan of the newer edits he puts out but it has nothing to do with the skiing, filming or editing, I think they’re some of the best content he’s ever put out. It’s just the music sucks, copyright free music is wack but there’s no getting around that nowadays, especially when your videos are monetized. (You get paid for your edits, right Evan?)

Nothing will compare to clownschool edits, but before you talk shit...try and follow Jonah Williams down 3kings with a glide cam and try not to blow every shot let alone get the unique angles eheath does while barely shaking the camera.

pipe down there sunny.

But are you getting paid?

I have a youtube channel with 100 subs and I've had 6 one day edits taken down by youtube because of the music. really sucks because me and my friends really liked them but now we can't find good music
