No baseball in the future sounds like a good thing imo. Baseball is easily the worst spectator sport of all time.

And baseball viewership is falling, but it's still #3 most popular sport (behind football and basketball) in the US. It has a huge global presence in Japan, South Korea, and Latin America. Also, there's a lot more games in a baseball season than other sports. More games means more revenue from ticket sales and advertisers. The MLB has a strong players association that ensures that a solid chunk of that revenue goes to the players.

Baseball is a dying sport.
They are lucky there is still so much money in the MLB all the teams have good local regional cable TV deals, the national deals are good, and the parks get full on the weekends tickets aren't cheap. Playoffs get good ratings.
But its amazing that all of these teams supported 200+ person farm systems for as long as they did the sport has serious participation issues. Imagine these idiots losing a year of their salaries to make a stand they aren't even being asked to take paycuts.

I really hope the lockout ends soon. I think it will. No evidence whatsoever, just a gut feeling. The owners care about money, and money only. If they keep cancelling games, they're going to gouge their pockets. At some point, they will cave. The players aren't asking for outrageous increases.

The year-over-year ratings and average viewers are dropping. The league needs to figure out how to market to a younger crowd before their current viewers all die off.
From what I've gathered over my million years on this earth is that there tends to be die-hard fans that eat it up and those that simply go because it's akin to a BBQ — food, beer, friends, and occasionally paying attention to whats happening on the field. The middle of the road baseball fan seems to be more rare these days and people either love it or hate it.
