Fuck Olympic Halfpipe

Thats right. Fuck. That. Shit. People talk like this is some sort of progression, but they forgot or didn't ski when JP, JF, Douglas and Dorion broke off from FIS regulated competitions. Progression came from getting away from FIS, why crawl back to it when skiing is just starting to get good. Oh, and X games are gay.
Discuss.

1975: racing is fucking weak and over regulated there is no freedom in it lets just go shred moguls

1998: moguls are fucking weak and over regulated there is no freedom in it lets go shred the snowboard park

2011: fuck yeah olympic halfpipe

nah dude hes got a point, you gotta know your roots. douglas and crew pretty much pioneered freeskiing to get away from the conformity of competitions, and now it looks as though skiing is coming full circle.

I just hope half pipe skiing doesn't get all European and gay on us, all regulated and shit like freestyle & aerials

i think its an amazingly good thing that halfpipe skiing is in the olympics, its just too bad that it is a necessary evil for the corrupt clowns at the IOC and FIS to be running the show. snowboarding almost made it with the IFS, but thanks to the nepotism at the IOC, the FIS shut down that threat to its dominance and effectively stole the sport. to the FIS credit, they are an evolving institution and have genuinely made some important contributions, but the very nature of institutions often inhibits the progression of sports

The nice thing is that it's not all of skiing that's going this way. There are skiers looking at things more creatively than before, making better movies, etc. FIS isn't going to have any regulating effect on any of us (unless you were planning on training hard to get into the events). Olympic pipe didn't kill snowboarding, and snowboarding is still seen as way more creative/flowy than skiing in general.
And the exposure will show kids a side of skiing that many of them probably didn't know about. Nothing wrong with getting a whole bunch more people stoked on skiing.

That said, there's a huge debate thread going on in SG right now, why post this in the van/whis forum unless trying to cause an unnecessary shitstorm?

The difference is now that the sport is already sustained through other competitions, and olympics are once every 4 years, and yes the biggest stage in the world, but look at snowboarding, X-Games and other comps are just as huge or even bigger influence on the sport and haven't changed in terms of rules/regulations.
