Fuck me.

So I have had my drivers license for 2 months now. I have a job at a construction company when i am not at school, and I get paid pretty decently so today I am looking on the internet for cars. So I am looking for a car that is pretty fast cause I want a nice fast car. So I come across a Subaru WRX STi that is in my price range. So I got so hyped up over this car and about how it has 300hp and my current car has around 115 hp so I decide to go for a drive to get ice cream and I live on a highway. So I turn onto the highway which is 80 km/h and I go the speed limit and then I start going down a hill and my speed increases to 90 just from the hill (no big dea I do that all the time) and then nearing the bottom of the hill I think about the subaru and step on it right as I pass this car... and the lights come on and he turns around and pulls me over. Fuck my life. He comes up to me and tells me he clocked me at 111 km/h and asks for my stuff and goes back to his car. Now, my mom works at the court house so I know a thing or two about the laws and such. So I am thinking about it and I know that 30 over is $194 and 30 can also be considered Reckless Driving which can get your license taken away for 30 days. So at this point I am scared as FUCK. There goes my new car, my license, and money. So as I am sitting there about ready to try and make myself start crying so he might have some sympathy for me he comes up to my window and says "Are you related to (insert name)?" and I am like yeah actually thats my mom.... and he's like, well your lucky, because of that I will only give you a ticket for $89 and two demerits (I have 8 in total). So slightly relieved and nervous as fuck go back on the highway and go 70 the whole rest of the way. Now, I am not buying the car anymore because My insurance will go up and well lets face it. Why get a faster car when I just got a speeding ticket. So the court date to go fight it is February 1 2010. I know it might be a bit greedy to go fight it after I got a break already, but I REALLY dont want the demerits, I will pay pretty much any amount to be able to not get the demerits.

Question: So I feel kind of like a dick for fighting it but since the ticket is for doing 95 in an 80 thats what I will have to fight. So if I were to tell the prosecutor that I was going 85 km/h or something and then it was the hill that made my speed increase do you think the officer would remember what actually happened? Or do you think that because he knows my mom he will remember and decline?
Just my little rant.. I really hate driving now.

don't get too worried about it. it sucks, but it's not the end of the world.
what i'm curious about though, is how would you say you were going 85 if he clocked you at 111?
maybe i misinterpreted what you said, but that's not a good idea. don't press your luck

Its never an excuse to say that a hill made you go over the speed limit. That's why cars have breaks.

eh i had a guy "give me a break" after i told him how i was a completely broke full time college student and absolutely not afford a big ticket (i was blocking an intersection...fml) his idea of a break was to not hit me for my inspection which was 3 days past due at the time and give me a $205 ticket.
i fought it and they ended up knocking 100 off the fine which was cool i guess, the cop was a dumbass though and didnt remember shit because he had been standing on the corner giving out tickets for that for hours. i feel like you probably wouldnt be so lucky, considering he knew your mom and gave you a massive break in the first place. if i were you i would leave it be, pay it, and start using your head when you drive rather than trying to get rid of your demerits. its really not all that bad to drive the speed limit and follow traffic laws...i started doing it.

Well he clocked me at 111, but on the ticket he said I was going 95. So thats why. And yeah I realize that, that's a bad excuse, but it's the only one I have thought of yet haha.

P.S. i dont know if you have ever been to court but judges are not the most forgiving people. if he does remember you and gives his recollection of the events the judge is going to tell you to fuck off, and its going to be really shitty and embarrassing.

if you think you can win, dont feel bad that he gave you a break. if he really wanted to give you a break he wouldve not given you the ticket at all. its just a tactic they use so that you dont contest and they dont have to go to court.

My sister got called to court for driving past a supposed "stop sign" a few months back. Well, she was freaking over it about how this is gonna fuck her over and what not. But then, on court day, the cop never showed, and she got away with nothing against her. Fucking hilarious.

No hate, but Americans have a reputation for packing a big fuss over nothing (suing for millions over nothing) and its things like this that enforces the sterotype.

If I were you I'd be stoked with what he did for you

He let you off a big arse fine. Be stoked, dont get all anal.. $95USD isnt that bad..

Wanna know a bullshit story.

In New zealand, at 15.5 years old you can get a restricted license which is when you can drive by yourself between 6am-10pm but only carry passenger when someone who has had a full license for over two years is in the car..

One day I was in town before school with a real good mate and it was raining.. I drove like 2KM back to school with her in the car and I got fined for breach of license.. $400NZD ( that would be maybe $200-300 USD). That is bullshit.

So yeah, just move on, pay the fine but dont take it to court to protest.

This isnt necessarily true always. There are some times when it is unavoidable for them. You have to realize, cops are people too, with bosses.

He needs to look at it this way. He risked it and got caught. He was lucky enough to have been let of easy. Man up and pay the fine. If you dont want to pay anymore fines, dont drive like a jackass.

I have a V1, i havent had a problem getting pulled over for speeding yet. You have to realize that this isnt foolproof as well. Actually reading the manual that came with the valentine was super helpful. BAsically it teaches you how to interpret the radar and its dynamics. Its more than just waiting for it to beep.

A radar detector only does so much, it's worthless against laser, pacing and careless driving; all 3 of which I've been ticketed for with a BEL Pro RX65.

If you were planning on spending at least 15k on an STi you can probably afford to pay the ticket, but still fight it anyway, damn the man for keepin' you down.

He has had is license for 2 months. Theres no way he makes that sort of change to purchase this. His parents bought it for him.

You really have no business in an sti. If you continue to drive like an asshole, youll become a statistic.

Dont get me wrong, i had one. It was a great car and served me well. But its a cop magnet, and rightly so i acquired the corresponding tickets.

On another note, the only radar detector that is worth buying is the Valentine One.

-Pacing is easy to avoid, just be aware of the cars around you

-careless driving is a super vague ticket that can be constituted by many things.

-laser, for the most part if unavoidable. Just dont speed in know laser traps is the only real answer.

Radar CAN track who is who. I used to intern at a company that was a distributor of radar systems for police. There are ones now that can track up to 6 different targets and readout a different speed for each simultaneously.

Laser can only really be used when the cop is standing still.

This works, I've had a ticket dismissed because the cop lost visual contact of my car. He was going the opposite way, I dipped out on him into a parking lot, waited a few minutes pulled back out, he spotted me from across town(small drive through mountain town) came over and pulled me over. In court he lied and said he only lost visual for 3 seconds when I was rounding a corner, even so the judge sided with me.

I remember hearing one way to possibly fight it is to find out the cop's radar gun number and do some research to see when the last time it was calibrated. I don't know how easy it is, or how well it works. But I think if it's been a certain amount of time since the last calibration, you can get out of the ticket. I don't know for sure, but I guess this is one of the ways how one of my friend's mom, who is a lawyer, would get him out of his speeding tickets when we were younger.

Just suck it up and pay the fine, speeding tickets are an unfortunate fact of life. As for the STI, of course you should still get it, I have gotten 2 speeding and my insurance has not changed at all from it. I also hit a car and payed cash so insurance never heard of that. Really an STI is still gonna cost way more in insurance, but if you could afford it before I don't think one 2 demerit ticket will change it.
Also I don't think 30 over can get you a reckless ticket on a highway, doing 80 on a neighborhood street yeah, but I have been caught doing 135 in a 90 and just got a fine

That sucks dude but be thankful. I got my license in Aus bit over 3 weeks ago that lets me drive by myself. I got caught speeding 18 km over the speed limit when i wasn't paying attention and talking to my brother. I got a $197 fine and am going to loose my license for 3 months because in NSW were im from they have a new rule where any p plater (17-20 before getting full license) caught speeding looses there license.i didnt even know i was speeding the cop followed me with his sirens on down the street and when i had pulled in and parked to let my brother out i noticed him behind me and was totally confused until he showed me the LIDAR gun.
that is what sucks. be grateful he was nice to you.

someone mentioned it up there but if 194 dollars stops you from buying a sti, you probably couldn't afford it to begin with

Do they teach you how to read in NZ? Because I mean, he clearly said he was going 111 km/h. Here in Amurica, we say mph.

And I mean, if you look at his profile he says he's from Alberta, Canada. Just sayin'...

i think its stupid not to just take the ticket...just go with it and pay 89 bones and takes the two demerits...you've got 6 more right so why pay a court fee or whatever since you probably wont win and you'll make an enemy of that cop when he helped you out...my 2 cents

You're a fucking idiot. You think you should be able to drive an STi after only having a license for 2 months? On top of that, you are going 30 over the speed limit NEAR OTHER CARS? They should seriously put an age limit on these cars. I know alot about them and yes I know their potential. No kid should ever have one as soon as they get their license, ever. I don't care how good of a driver you are. They have the potential to be an incredibly deadly weapon in a split second. On top of that, you have 8 demerits. 8 DEMERITS IN 2 MONTHS? What the hell were you doing? I am sure you are going to give us some dumb excuse about how it wasn't your fault, but it was. People like you scare me when you get behind the wheel of a nice and fast car like an STi. It is only a matter of time before you wrap it around a tree and kill yourself or others. Take this ticket as a sign that you aren't ready for one yet.

pretty sure he can get 8 demerits before he loses his license, not that he has that many. apparently he only has 2 from this ticket. that's what i got out of it anyways.

"and he's like, well your lucky, because of that I will only give you a

ticket for $89 and two demerits (I have 8 in total)."

Sounds to me like he is saying he has 8. Regardless, he clearly showed his lack of responsibility and the reason why he shouldn't own a car like a STi. It's people in Subaru's like him that are the reason I have to pay so much insurance for mine.

Yeah... I still can't get over the 8 demerits in 2 months bit.
Really? and you thought it was a good idea to gun it?
Take the ticket, you were sooooo lucky.
I have a subaru impreza... and yeah, pretty sure my insurance would be less if it wasn't for people like you. Even with out being an STI cops still watch it more than say a taurus.
I have 1 speeding ticket on my record (going 6 over) and pay $187 a month for full coverage...
You can't afford an STI. Your parents maybe can. But you cannot.

Very true. Like you said the hidden cost of these things is amazing as well. You are talking anywhere from $30-60 an oil change if you do it yourself because you have to run high grade oil and it take a lot of oil, even more if you pay someone to do it. Then you need good tires, pay for premium gas, insurance, etc. It is an expensive car. On top of that every 18 year old kid wets himself over them, buy them and then crash them and the rest of us drivers that have a clean record so far have to front the bill for it.

Sorry, when I typed it out i was a little stressed from ticket and it was late. I have a total of 8 demerits that I am allowed to get, this was my first driving offence, so I got 2 demerits which leaves me with 6/8 demerits left. I was the only other one on the highway besides the cop. Sorry now that I read it it makes me seem like I was passing a car, but I was actually only passing a car that was oncoming (it's only a 2 lane highway.) So I wait for that car to drive past and after he is about 10 m behind I accelerated (I waited till he passed incase it was a police officer) and that is when the lights came on and he turned around on the highway. So really he was behind me going the other direction when he turned his lights on. This was at night too.
Next topic: Its not the $89 dollars that is holding me back from buying the car, it is the raise in insurance that will go up to about $3000 a year for insurance on the subaru. (500 a year over what insurance would have been for the subaru.) So if I dont buy a new car, the insurance company wont bring up my history and my insurance wont go up.
The car I intended to buy, would have been payed solely by myself. It was not a new Sti, it was a 1994 and it was $5500 dollars. Which is infact something I can afford, and it would be payed off straight up, so I would have money to pay for everything else that needs to be done.
I have no problem paying the ticket. I know if I go to court I will end up paying anyways, I would just like to talk to the prosecutor and ask him if there was anyway he could knock off 1 demerit or both, and I would be open to paying a higher fine. I can't guarantee it will work but it might considering my mom has worked at the court house for 25 years and I know the majority of the prosecutors and judges there.

yea take that ticket fore sure!

If he already gave you a break and knows your mom He will probly remember what happened and if you try and fight it you could end up looking like an idiot (like someone said before)

What country do you live in? A 1994 STi is like a V1 or V2 and $5500 for those is actually a really good price. They aren't even that crazy of a car, not like the past couple of years for the STi.

Canada eh? Yeah, also I wouldn't be driving it until next summer, cause I want to drive my beater for the first winter. But yeah, I am def paying the ticket, after driving around today, I did the speed limit all day and that ticket really opened my eyes haha.

i say don't press the charge, it seems like you got cut some slack and that you should be happy with it.. although i completely feel not wanting hte demerits in the first place.

but also, a friend of mine has an 03 wrx (might be sti im not sure) with radar and he drives fast all the time, i feel like if your concious enough you'll get away with a ton.

youre fighting it after he let you off easy? you know he has to show up in court right? he could just say fuck you you were going 111, pay up bitch.

and the insurance on an STi, especially for someone driving for two months would be INSANE`

On a 1994 V1 STi it might not be so bad for insurance actually. Those aren't like the STi's we have nowadays in the states.

ok. i trust you cause you seem to know youre shit.

but still, dude, you couldnt take the ticket and be humbled? just pay the fine yo

if you want an sti you better get used to it. my buddy nate is known as the ambassador to law enforcement.

you should prob pick up one of those shirts and find yourself a good lawyer before you drive an sti off the lot. with only 2 months of "real" driving experience youre prob gonna need them in the future. i dont think they sell them in a tall tee though.
