Last night my friend was riding his bike home around 11PM. Some drunks pulled up beside him in a car and started yelling at him. He ignored them and kept riding. When they reached a red light he kept going because there was no cross traffic and they gunned the engine after initially slowing down. They hit him, throwing him to the side and completely running his bike over narrowly missing running him over. When he looked up the car was 4 blocks away. His bike is totalled and he almost got killed. Now he can barely walk, he hasnt gone to the hospital/doctor yet because he is getting married and broke and has no insurance.

/Rant

shit, that sucks, if only he saw the licenses plate. he should still go to the cops though, i mean if he can describe the car it helps a lot

He went to the cops today to file a police report and the cop said it wouldn't do any good (this is probably right) then he suggested that my friend probably had a reason not to call the cops (possession, drunkeness etc..) fucking douche..

i know how it feels to have this happen. my thoughts go out to your buddy. im so sick of this shit happening and people getting away with it. ive found the best way to combat it though is to just stop. cuz if he stops you can get his plates and if he keeps going then youve side stepped the whole problem.

but again, fuck douchebags. i dont even see whats so fucking wrong with riding a bike. im assuming he was on a road bike. people need to understand that bikes go fast. fast enough that if the rider fell off they could be seriously injured or killed. its complete bullshit.

Fucking dicks dude. I've been hit by a car riding my bike and they fucking trashed my front wheel. Shit. I thought I had a picture of it. Anyways, +major vibes.

that sucks.

off topic but how can people in the states say universal health care is bad if stuff like this happens but people wont go to the doctor because its too expensive.

Ya because most 20 year olds who work at a bakery, are paying for a wedding, and starting college out of state next year can afford health insurance no problem.

its not like universal health care will be cheap, taxes will be a lot higher (like 50% goes to taxes), and if you dont use it, you will still pay as much as everyone else, and end up paying for someone elses treatment, and that person could be getting a surgery for something that was their fault (like a lung transplant for a smoker). thats people areguements against it.

lets not hijack the thread too much...

but as it stands right now, you cannot be denied access to an emergency room, regardless of your insurance/financial status. Even if you can't afford it, you get emergency care. Who do you think pays for these emergency services? Taxpayers, that's who. So if you're going to be paying for the uninsured regardless of policy, and if you can reduce the costs the uninsured incur, by insuring them, and giving them access to preventative care, why wouldn't you?

my dads a hardcore road cyclist, in chicago no less, shits ridiculous. they seem to not understand that cyclists have a right to the road as well.

first off. that sucks for your friend kip, and thankfully hes is not super super hurt. (like dead)

i personally have no problem with bikers. i myself enjoy a nice jaunt on the road bike.

what i cant stand is people biking 2 wide just hogging the road... it takes everything i have not to roll down the window and scream at them to bike one wide...

that really sucks i hate it when people drive like assholes. my buddy got hit by a car last summer so the driver gave him 100$ if he didnt say anything since it was the like the guys third time hitting a bike

Sometimes it's safer this way, because it forces cars to actually pass in the left lane. If there's a big shoulder then yes, there's no need for this, but a lot of roads have small/no shoulder.

vibes dude. I was just talking w some friends about people who got hit while biking. then I see this. the road is full of assholes who think that only cars have a right of way. hope your buddy gets well soon

how is it safer???? more sketch for the cars, ride in the fucking shoulder. i hate driving in slc because of the 3 wide bike shredder morons, stay a safe distance from cars and there shouldn't be a problem, use common sense, you're not a fucking car.

ya no shit you can share the road not take it, and they dont move over so you can pass tham either and you have to go slow as hell until you can pass. it seems like hardcore road bikers always go down the narrowist ride they can find and at the bussiest time to

Assholes like that should be dragged into a public center and shot. One of my good HS friends was riding his bike in Boston, got his back tire clipped by a taxi and flew head on into an 18-wheeler. The taxi never stopped. That is fucking manslaughter at the very least. Link to article

like anything in this world... snowboarders, road bikers, dudes that drive trucks, gun owners... the douchebag members of each group are such big douchebags that everyone thinks that people that do that activity are ALWAYS like the douchebags of the group.

I'm sorry, what shoulder?

The road up to Carter Lake in Colorado is always full of cyclists, it's a one lane road with no shoulder where every vehicle driving up or down is either an RV or towing a boat. It's such a stupid place to ride. But you'll find most road bikers are so disrespectful, they feel entitled to ride way under the speed limit on major through fares even at the busiest times, ignore traffic signs, and generally clog things up for commuters. We realize you have a right to the road for your hobby, but you shouldn't maybe once a few more elitists in spandex get run over you'll find better places to ride.

that sucks, someone who I work with got hit on their bike, by a motorcycle. Its like some people are just out there to be douchebags. Hope your friend feels better, and hope his wedding goes well.

maybe all bikes need license plates. then they can be taxed to help pay for bike lanes. and given citations for breaking traffic laws.

Everyone posting a comment about bikers being douche bags etc etc missed the point that the car ran a red light AFTER slowing down to stop and INTENTIONALLY hit my friend almost killed him and continued to drive. I talked to him today and he got a good description of the brand new silver monte carlo and the neighborhood it drove into plus he is pretty sure that he damaged the grill/hood of the car so we might be taking the Loughisville Slugger out for a late night/early morning ride tonight.

Thats what pisses me off about them. They pick and choose what laws of the road they are going to follow.

When I see some one on a bike i get sketched out and stay way away from them casue you never know what they are going to do.

When you have no idea if they are going to blow the light or not its probably better to not kill some one and use some caution.

They still piss me off tho.

by law, they have the same rights as cars. it can be frustrating, but its perfectly legal

i could see this. maybe cheaper than a car license plate, but not unreasonable. it would force the cyclists that give the others bad names by running lights, etc to shape up

in pittsburgh once we were stopped in traffic and i went to get out of the car for a minute to brush some "stuff" off of my shirt and when i opened the door a biker smashed into my buddies door. he has a pretty big lifted truck so basically the guys like stomach and up hit it and he got pretty fucked up. but he was hauling ass down the road, we were in the left lane so he was inbetween cars going fast as shit down the hill. we figured he deserved it and he just got up after a minute told us to fuck off and left.

ride in the god damn bike lane where your supposed to, your logic makes zero sense, if anyone is stacked up when I pass them I make sure to let them know how much of an idiot they really are

yeah this is a fucked up story but theres alot of bikers on the road that need to stick to the sides and quit playing daredevil with cars

In the back of Velo News or Bicycling Magazine, you will find listed various attorneys who specialize in cycling accidents and depending on the place (state, city, etc) I've known of cases where they have been able to find the car, and rather than press charges, sue the shit out of the owner of the car, or better their insurance company. It's a bit of a stretch, but if the lawyer is not in the right state, they may have a good referrral for you who is sympathetic to cyclists. Most police agencies have zero concern foir cyclists and will never pursue a case; take it to a cycling lawyer in the state where it happened on contingency.

how does he not make sense? both my parents are hardcore road riders and there's no such thing as bike lanes, not much more shoulders either. they stay as close as they can off the road, but how hard is it for a driver to slow down 5 mph and give them a little room? its retards like you that i hope end up getting slammed by a careless driver.

You said they sue the shit out of the owner of the car and not the driver? Seems to me like a douche bag thing to just sue the owner if they werent driving

what if you live in a place where there are no bike lanes assfuck. they have every right to be on the road, so deal with it.

yeah cuz all kids in america should start paying money to ride a bike.. why dont we just pay for oxygen next? i think our tax money would be well invested if every town had a bike lane.. but not all towns do. but in no way do i think anyone needs a bike license.

and that sucks for Joe, ill have to call him and see how he is doing. That kind of shit pisses me off, especially since one of my good friends mom a few years ago got intentionally ran over and they guy who did it wanted to rape her dead body... yeah, shit is fucked up.. luckily she survived but was in rehab for a long time.

WTF?? First off this gets me angry and scared to ride a bike, what is up with people intentionally running people over? How could that ever sound like a good idea?.. And they tried to rape her dead body? That's sooo fucked up...

yes tax oxygen. wow did you just think of that one? you must be a genius. maybe email barackobama@whitehouse.gov with that idea?

now for what i was actually talking about. i assume you know how roads are paid for. gas taxes dolled out through the FHWA or your transportation improvement board (state or local level). or by your local governments property tax income and implemented through whatever form it chooses to call its long-term comprehensive municipal plan. and recently lots of the economic stimulus money went to paving projects in my state.

my point would be that bikes don't contribute to the paving costs, but yet always complain about lack of bike lanes? or am i just stereotyping? how much revenue would be produced by increasing the price on bikes by say $20?

although their is a similar catch-22 involving hybrids and other high-mpg automobiles and the deficiency on the tax base necessary to build and maintain roads. price of oil goes up, people find a way to purchase less gas. thus less gas tax income. and plus with the higher cost of oil, asphalt paving costs go up. big problem we have on our hands.

yeah. i have no problem with bikers who are respectful and share the road... key being share not own the road. haha

i have a problem with the dbag bikers. just like dbag skiers, boarders, they are in every sport.

i can understand the riding down the middle of the lane totally though. around here people will risk nailing you rather than actually moving over to the other lane, so you have to force them. and really it is legal.

and i agree the dbag bikers ruin it for others. the guys who run lights, and generally disobey traffic laws. they forget that while they want to enjoy sharing the road, that means they also have to follow the laws.

i'm talking in a city, not in the middle of nowhere.

and i feel for the victim in the first post, i'm just saying bikers are annoying as fuck in salt lake.
