so ive been kinda bummin lately, as i hurt my knee a few weeks ago, and not skiing have been killin me. was waitin on the MRI to come back, but everyone suggested just some cartilage damage. well, went to the doc yesterday, she comes, in, Chris, i have baad news. you blew your ACL. totally unexpected.

if that doesnt suck enough, i have been planning for roughly a year to spend this summer in NZ skiing. scratch that. ill be lucky if im back in shape by next winter.

also, to anyone whos done it, what route did ya go to replacement? cadaver or rebuilding it? dead people parts sound like the best option for me, but i really dont know.

it depends on your age and such..i was 15 when i tore mine and they did a hamstring graft..apparently its also proven to be the longest lasting replacement? i tore my acl on february 25th, had surgery march 17th, and i was close to normal in july. by the time ski season came around in november i just got a cti brace (im guessing its so i feel more confident, i dont think i actually need it..its nice to ahve though, i dont even notice its there) and i was right back into it, no pain or anything

yeah, the hamstring graph is the other serious option, but i guess you dont have maximum extension strength? dont sound so hot to me, as i do alot of biking and stuff like that, but dunno.

i race, i have absolutely no problems whatsoever. it depends on how much you rehab i guess. they told me to mountain bike/road bike as much as possible, as part of the rehab, so i did, and apparently it worked out pretty damn well

yea, i plan on investing in a good road bike, as i think the risk of a fall in freeride/street/mt binking are to risky. at least at first. but ill be on that thing all summer. good to hear tho, sounds like it might be a good option too

yeah they were like 'yeah bikings definitely going to be a good thing for you to do, especially road biking. you can mountain bike too. just dont fall.'

i think i took my first hard fall since surgery in august, and my knee was totally fine, so i was really happy about that haha

but yeah, the only thing about the hamstring is that you have to rehab your hamstring too, but im really happy with how everything turned out.

i have had 3 acl surgeries...i would reccomend a hamstring graft...plus, don't worry, you'll be back to ski next season no problem...just get surgery asap. i had one in mid-march a few years ago, and was shredding no problem in october the next fall. that, and do your therapy!

I had the hamstring graft done too...I was out for around a year. The docs had me do Phys. Therapy for six months, then surgery, then six more months Phys. Therapy. I also tore my MCL and LCL, but those weren't worked on. The docs said they would heal themselves, however, they still give out from time to time. The rpoblem with a cadaver, is you cant be sure if your body will accept the replacement. Also, who knows if your getting an ACL from a 90 year old women or a 20 year old athlete.

oh shit they made you do rehab before surgery too? damn that sounds a lot rougher than my experience

someone should invite this kid to the ACL cult, theres some good threads in there.....

just got the patellar graft done about 10 days ago, hope to be better than ever by opening day next season.....

yea, thats another thing, is there no way to garentee that kinda stuff?

so huh, hampstring graft seems to be the more popular option.

tell your doctor you want a quadrupled semitendiosis hamstring graft. its the bomb dizzle.

You'll easily be skiing by next season, if you got your surgery asap you could be healthy in 4 months and be skiing in july or august.

yea you'll definitely be back by next season, maybe not early season but for the sick ass part you will be. i had a reconstruction in june of 06 and i skied in december. i think it was longer too because thats my second one in that knee, but yea, you'll be fine. shit happens dont be bummed about it. i mean its ok for a bit, but then ya gotta just be like im gonna get the fuck over this and next season is gonna be kick ass. anyway i would reccommend the cadaver, because then you're not "robbing peter to pay paul" as my doc always told me. you dont injure anything in the process basically. but you have to be sooooooooo so so so careful getting back into stuff, cuz it feels like its healed much quicker but the actual graft does not have the strength you think it does.

yea, im not bummed about the season here. what im bummed about, is im in ohio, and have skied roughly 20 times this season, and was going to spend a summer in NZ skiing to make up for the horrible skiing here. now i cant, and next summer, i should really be doing internships. thats what sucks. but yea, makes sense about the cadaver thing, i dunno. sounds like both are really good ways to go about it.
