Was about a report just released by the United Nations on Global Warming, here are a few quotes I took from the article:

"The panel’s reports are particularly influential in international talks over climate treaties, especially the Kyoto Protocol, whose binding limits on emissions expire in 2012. Those limits have been rejected by the United States and China."

"In February, the panel released its fourth summary of basic climate science, concluding with 90 percent certainty that humans were the main cause of warming since 1950."

"In a sign of shifting geopolitics on global warming, scientists who worked on the report criticized China for weakening some language in the summary"

"the European Union has said it plans to renew efforts to get the United States to do more to cut greenhouse gas emissions."

"agreement had been reached between scientists and government officials over the final details of a 21-page summary."

This is for the most part, the final word on GW

It's 21 degrees here and its the day before Easter. Oh ya thats definitely the "final word on GW"

don't worry man, i'm sure theres gonna be someone who still thinks they're smarter than the people who have devoted their entire lives to trying to understand this.

No, not at all. China is actually quite powerful in the UN, permanent seat in the security council and veto power. A nation's form of government/ economy doesn't determine its status in the UN as much as it's position post WWII.

oh ok. thnak you very much. were actually studing china right now in history. but because of spring break we havent gotten very far.

I hate our government. I mostly hate how the issue is brought up over and over again and looked at by bush and other top political figures and the whole time they act like they really acknowledge the issue but then just turn around and shove their thumbs up their asses.

Yea but the point is, hes not exactly doing anything to help the cause out. I mean, do you think it makes us look good that the only 2 countries in the UN to disregard this policy are China and the U.S.?

And what might I ask is Bush going to do? He hasn't veto'd any bills, he isn't a fucking scientist trying to resolve anything. And what the fuck are you talking about top political figures don't acknowledge it? One made a fucking movie about it and raked in $50 mil I'd say thats acknowledging it.

Ny Times, also a democratic media source. In the record, i found an article proving the main cause of global warming is all bovine gases. So u really dunno what to believe anymore.

thats funny that 75,000,000 american people were too ignorant to vote him into presidency when he was running. Instead they vote George Bush, we our no where near as great as we think we are.

what people dont understand now is that we arent arguing over the fact that global warming is/isnt affecting our climate.

EVERYONE agrees that global warming WILL BE an issue and is causing some crazy weather patterns. We wont see the full effects of this beast until around 2050, unless we do something about it of course.

Thanks for illustrating human ignorance perfectly. Its entirely human to distrust something we dont immediately see. Sudden and violent changes are the only things that draw our attention. You might be experiencing lower temperatures right now, but globally, the temperature of the world is increasing. And that's something to worry about, yes.

huh. virginia hasnt gotten any snow for 2 winter seasons (last year and this year) but just today we got snow. so.. i'm still thinkin bout this whole global warming business

Again, just because you suddenly get snow in April, it doesnt mean that thousands of research projects and hundreds of man hours devoted to research by scientists all over the globe is all bullshit. Global warming isnt something you'll acutely see.

And besides that fact, an increase in global temperatures will upset normal climactic cycles, and the possibility of having 'weird weather' will more than likely increase. So really, snow in april only should further convince you Global Warming is real.

People who vote for 1 president over another aren't ignorant, it's called Democracy.

...... yea but i think someone said that in the 1840's we got snow around march-may. and i DO kno that global warming is real. i'm juss sayin my perspective is different.

our weather here in Bozeman MT sucks ass it isnt too cold but the wind has been blowin pretty good for the last couple of weeks or so.

I don't think the anti-GW people are even arguing that the world isn't warming up any more. They're just arguing that humans didn't cause it, so... whether it's snowing in April or not, everyone is pretty much in agreement that GW is real, just not so much on the reason for that.

What surprises me is that Al Gore made 50mil from that movie... I feel like maybe it would have been more appropriate to donate that money to, ah I donno, research on global or something. Maybe that's just me.

werd, and gores house in kentucky in one week uses as much energy as an average household uses in one month, sounds a little hypocritical to me

Yeah, Gore is a hypocrite, but that doesn't mean that the facts that he presented in An Inconvienent Truth are clouted. People should listen to him, even if he doesn't lead the most "green" lifestyle. The way he lives does discredit him some but that doesn't change the fact that he has opened millions of peoples' eyes through his presentation.

i'm in the process of reading "the weather makers" by tim flannery which essentially proves with solid evidence that we are the cause of the global warming we are experiencing

Actually, the American people didn't vote Bush into office, the Electoral College did. Does that make sense? The majority of the American population voted for Kerry, but the way the Electoral College is layed out, Bush got into office. The EC, in my opinion, is a major issue in America . It worked back when it was formed, but I think it is obselete in our society. What about you guys, whay do you think?

Its interesting that the panel said that Humans were the cause of global warming from 1950 on. So then how does that explain the atleast 20 year cooling period between the 50's and 70's and how most scientests back then thought that we were going into another Ice Age

I FUCKING HATE THIS SHIT AND I CANT STOP YELLLINNNNG!!!!!!

god this shit is retarded! Whether or not we are the cause doesnt matter, the fact is we might not cause it, but we can only make positive changes by rethinking how we do things and just living overall cleaner lifestyles

so fuck bitching about why its happening and just start treatin the earth better. NOTHING BAD WOULD HAPPEN IF WE JUST PULL OUR HEADS OUT OF OUR ASSES AND HAVE BETTER EMISSION STANDARDS OR OTHER AREAS THAT CAN BE CLEANED UP.

Well I used the words "top political figures" because I dont want to say that all the decission making is up to Bush alone. I think he gets bashed for a lot of stuff that should be taken care of by other people.

And he could set some lower standards for emissions put out by companies or something and ACTUALLY enforce it.

And he doesnt have to be a scientist, if you havent heard, there have many meetings of the top scientists that all get together and agree with eachother that global warming is happening and how fast it is happening and who is contributing how muh to the problems/solutions; then they hand that exact evidence to the president. He knows what our country is doing to this planet and he still doesnt propose anything(atleast not anything effective).

but maybe you know more about this than i do. So whatever, to each his own or something like that.

Yeah a big factor in elections is who is in control of redrawing the state maps because republicans have a beneficial map to themselves where there state will most likely win.

Just because it the temperature has been rising 1/10 or 1 degree C per decade for 50 years doesn't mean the earth is going to catch fire.

Well when its fucking sleeting in LA in APRIL it doesnt support the Global Warming theory too well does it?

^^^ Lots of people are going to disagree but I side with those who are not confident in the effects of GW. The earth is millions of years old and has gone through dramatic climate changes much more severe without fossil fuel effects being around.

I just find it ironic that after hundreds of researches that approve GW, a small bunch of scientists find that "oh wait! its the sun/bovine/any reason that fucks our environment, not us of course!"

And so many people are going to agree with the last few researches, only because they dont tell them to change their behavior.

I dunno....Global Warming is pretty much the #1 issue on people's minds. You pretty much can't turn on the TV with out hearing something about global warming at least once. Right now, the Conservative party which is in office right now had to schuffle around their whole cabinate because their minister of the environment was just ignorant and fucking everything up. In canada this is the #1 topic on everybody's mind. So much that our PM had to change his policy on Global Warming and the environment. People who want changes done in the process of 20 to 50 years, we want it done now.

you just made yourself look like a fucking idiot.

Keep saying that when our ski season is reduced to a month in 20 years.

i like how none of you could answer my question

The fact is global warming is happening, but its not from the CO2 produced by humans

It doesn't matter when they said it started vs. when it did, that's a small invonvenience to the GW argument relative to the vast amount of research supporting it.

people who vote for a bad president over one of the more devoted and influencial political leaders are ignorant. i dont know why you point out that its a democracy, what does than have to do with it?

no one answered youre question cuz youre not adding anything to this argument, you just tell people theyre wrong and point out stupid stuff to make people feel worse about themselves.

where is the CO2 coming from? are you thinking volcanoes?

Exactly! The reason that abolishing the EC wont happen for a while is because the Republicans are in power (though the majority is slowly shifting...) and have the beneficial eng of the EC. Until they either come to their senses of Dems get more influence, the EC will stay. Booooo...

Are we having our own mini side conversation? Weird. I like this thread though, its good to see people on NS have the ability to think after all.

I heard in my writing class(were writing our research papers on the environment) that at the last big meeting of scientists, some 98% were in concensus that GW is most certainly caused by humans. But your probably right. Those 98% probably dont know what they're talking about. Nothing will get done until we have 110% in concensus.
