Team America’s thoughts on JOSS. Setting the record straight=89138973545&p[]=110657445641505]Del I dag klokken 19:07Just wanted to give you guys a real statement from our side of the story. It sucks that is has come down to this. To have someone of Jon’s status personally call us out for things that are untrue, and spread rumors based on assumptions just isn’t right. Simon called Jon the day our video was released online, and discussed the event and video release itself. To show respect, Simon happily took the edit off of his website. We never went out of our way to say anything bad about this event or Jon himself. We have our own opinions on many things regarding this event, but kept them to ourselves as a matter of personal respect. We feel bad that we now have to set the record straight and back up our own reputations thanks to Jon’s blog post.

Jon is speaking about us and the event as if we're deliberately trying to sabotage his event in some way; which we have not and would never do. He also describes us as "not speaking to him or saying goodbye because of our score" which is completely untrue. We didn't have a chance to talk to him at the awards, and apparently never went out of our way to search out where he was staying to find him and thank him. For him to say we simply blew him off and disrespected him is completed unfounded. It isn't all one sided either; just as athletes are nothing without great events like JOSS... an event is also nothing without the top quality athletes. We all owe a lot to Jon for putting on such a fun event, but he also owes a lot to all the athletes that worked their absolute hardest for two long weeks to create videos with his name on them.

We would never outright attempt to disrespect Jon or put down this event in anyway. It is and has been one of the most fun events we've ever participated in. We respect Jon and all the hard work he has put in to make this event happen! We've spent thousands of dollars traveling to and staying Sweden, and have nothing to show for it after 2 long weeks of work other than our edit. That is why we decided that we would share our video with the world as soon as possible. By no means are we trying to steal the lime light from the other teams, because if anything this has captivated people and brought the stoke level to an all time high for the other videos to be released. We are just as excited as everyone else to watch all of the videos again. And we will watch all of them from Jon's site.

The reason we were upset and confused is simply because the judging criteria was so far-fetched from anything we've seen in the past. We were never informed of such drastic changes in the judging. This year as we found out at the awards ceremony the judging was based almost entirely on film making/theme. A perfect video to describe what the judges were looking for would be the hilarious video Colby and Symms made last year (which by the way received last place last season.) We are not upset in the way the contest was judged, but just upset that we had no idea it was going to be judged as such. The way the judging was done this year, it would be smarter for Jon to invite 2 filmers next year and let them pick their corresponding athletes instead of inviting athletes themselves. The filming/theme was more than 50% of your score this season, making top notch skiing almost unnecessary. But once again we are not upset at how it was judged; just that we had no idea it was going to be judge this way.

One factor that should have been considered and scrutinized more before being an integral part of the judging, was the distribution of points. The judging criteria and points breakdown given on the website is completely different then the format used to score the videos for awards. The judges gave 1 point for the 3rd place team in each judging category then 2 points for 2nd and 3 for 1st, and no points for 4th or below regardless of how close they were to placing in the respective judging category. The way points were awarded, the judges were basically saying that if you weren’t going to be one of the top 3 teams in a category, don’t bother adding it to your edit because you won’t get any points. So teams that tried to make well rounded edits but fell a little short in areas were severely penalized for not placing in the top 3 of the teams. Had this been a Slopestyle comp, it would be like the judges saying that if you aren’t going to do one of the best 3 tricks on a feature, don’t bother hitting it because you won’t get any points awarded for it. This is a major flaw and the cause of the extreme inconsistency in judging that allows teams to simply neglect certain aspects of the contest.

By no means were we ever trying to sabotage the event that Jon has worked so hard to create. We have continued to travel around the world for this event every year in the hopes of helping it grow to become bigger and better. The idea behind this event is absolutely amazing, and we will forever give props to Jon for working so hard to create and put on an event of this nature. In terms of Jon speaking about considering more thoroughly “who he invites next year,” you don’t have to worry about us. As we have already told you and your co-workers at the event, we will not be returning next year.

Just wanted to set the record straight, and make sure Jon doesn’t give all of you the wrong impression on how everything happened!

Thanks again though Jon for all your hard work. Good luck with all of your future endeavors! And thanks again for everyone that has watched and will watch the edit we’ve made. Hope you enjoy! It is the edit we’ve made that we are most proud of, and most stoked to share with all of you!

Cheers!

who posted this?

and the stanza about not knowing what the judging criteria was going to be in my mind is huge and i was waiting for that to be brought out by someone.

Bobby can more than fill his shoes for JOSS, plus if it were the same team set up next year, both Wallish and Brown wouldn't be able to be on the same team with Dumont, it could only be one of them. So no big loss in my opinion. Much rather see some new faces like Brown.

That's too bad they won't be returning their edit last year was sick and so was this year's but it didn't say anything about Schlopy who killed it maybe it's a good thing America will have a fresh set of riders for next year

Yeah! Bobby is good, but Wallischs style is outrageous ! And i think Wallisch have more tricks to pull up in such comp..

Two sides to every story...but you can understand why Jon is upset and now you can also understand the stand point that Team America is taking....i guess the bottom line though is that rules were broken.....it would be a shame if these athletes do not come back next year for both the event and these athletes...after the edits, isn't the whole point of this event the amazing features that these amazing athletes get to session and essentially progress on...

He also describes us as "not speaking to him or saying goodbye because

of our score" which is completely untrue. We didn't have a chance to

talk to him at the awards, and apparently never went out of our way to

search out where he was staying to find him and thank him.

This is not true, I talked with a friend who was at the official

afterparty and Simon and the rest where at the afterparty and Jon was

also there as well as the other teams;filmers, they where avoiding Jon

the day after. They would never have to "search" for Jon to say goodbye

and/or thanks, bullshit.

If you don't want to be judged you probably shouldn't compete. JOSS has always been more about the cinematography to me... remember the mind blowing paragliding shots from a couple years ago? Sounds to me like Tom thinks he is too good for JOSS. The thing is I don't give a fuck if I never see Simon and Tom at JOSS again... there are plenty of other killer skiers who can fill their shoes. Pretty half assed apology from Tom if you ask me.

Honestly no one will ever know exactly what happened except for Jon and The team. Sooo fuck it.

Can't wait for tomorrow..

regardless of sides and what exactly went down, i think that being the bigger person is the most important thing in this situation, and this apology from tom just doesn't demonstrate that. he should have gotten rid of his emotions and put together a formal apology instead of almost retaliating further with this somewhat attack.
I really haven't lost any respect for anyone involved in this whole thing, but so far schlopy has been the only one that I've gained respect for because he is the only one that i've seen take the higher road and put out a nice apology. big ups schlopy!
and to everyone else involved i'm sure its more complicated then it looks to me, but lets just let this one roll off the shoulder and not create more drama ...k

That's complete bullshit that "Jon should be thanking them for coming". There are hundreds of skiers lining up for this event that have just as much of a right to be there as Wallisch and Dumont. Why are they acting like it is hard on them? "We worked hard for two straight weeks." Ya you fucking partied all night and skied perfect features all day. Poor you. They should learn to have fun for once. Skiing is not all about winning. Dumont and Wallisch are just butt hurt and they are too embarrassed to come back next year. I would much rather see Hornbeck/Bobby B/ and Scholpy there. They would actually appreciate it. /rant

THANK YOU SIMON, I didn't want to see u this year either! (to speak the truth)

I see tom and simons point about the judging, but this is no reason to leak the edit...specially not without the sponsors in it!

AND...they are claiming the best video...norway won all ski related categories so they should be pissed?

but maybe european people just don't act like this!

True!

It´s fucked up that even Jon Olsson get blamed on, he puts on one of the best events and give so much back to the scene and some idiots want him to apologize invited primadonnas that cant take a loss?

Dont get in the game if u cant take it!

Feel bad for that kid Schlopy, seems like a cool cat and down to earth!

haters-gonna-hate.gif

You definitely are not clued into what JOSS is and how Jon benefits from it. Everyone out there who thinks he is just this great dude who puts this event on all for the good of the ski community are blind to the real reasons....
Jon benefits waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more than any of the athletes or filmers who spend 2 weeks of prime ski movie shooting time in Sweden. Not only do the athletes lose precious time shooting for their segments, but they also help Jon bring in a TON of dough for putting on the event and increasing his own exposure. This event is one of the reasons why he is able to continue his career at his age. He essentially uses the athletes to bring a shit ton of interest to what he is doing and increase his global brand. Yeah, the athletes get to stay, ride great features, and party, but if you think he is just a philanthropist then you are really naive. Jon is smart, successful, and manipulative. Do you not notice why none of the big film companies are involved anymore? A lot of people are aware of Jon's motives and the way he sets these things up for his own ego/benefit.
Homie is rolling around in a Lambo and beachfront condo in Monte Carlo. He has used this event for the past few years as a big time money maker and he benefits a shit ton more than any athlete there.
There are ALWAYS 2 sides to every story and based on what I know, I am stoked that someone is sticking it at Jon finally....

Yes because im sure all the athletes would rather go back to breck for spring shoots than go to JOSS...what a hardship for them, i mean its not like they could decline or anything......
Also, who the hell cares if Jon benefits more than the athletes financially. JOSS, undoubtably, pushes freesking every year, rightside dubs anyone?Jon is doing well, he knows he can make money out of what he's doing so why the hell not. He invites riders to party and ski and film, sure if hes got an underlying motive but im sure as hell the riders have fun. Isn't that what skiing was meant to be about?

He is not making any money on JOSS/JOI, its pretty much break even for him, have you even been there?

werd, I'd pay Jon to be in the event, just to be part of the most important event on the calendar. I'd also pay just to hit those features.

Skiing is about having fun. And if you're beefin', you ain't having fun.

About motives: would be fun to hear what you think about X-games, Dew tour etc etc? Any benefits for them in making events each year?

I AM GLAD THEY LEAKED IT. i am sick and tired of waiting its been 3 days im freaking the fuck out i dont even care half as much about the edits as i did on Sunday i know who won and i know everyones opinions soo yiuppie post the fucking EDITS!!!

Are you kidding???? X-Games and Dew Tour???
Son, those are events put on by corporations with the sole purpose of profit. There is no illusion there. They also pay out a SHIT TON of money to the competitors. For JOSS these guys pay, on their own dime, for flights to Sweden and take out 2 WEEKS of their prime filming season (BC and Urban) and might have a shot at winning, what......20K split between the 5 man team???? That is NOTHING to these guys if they win. And if they don't they end up spending waaaaaay too much time doing an event that SOLEY benefits Jon and his global brand. Sure the guys have fun and it is a great event, but it is not anything that benefits ANY of the people involved from a professional standpoint (with the exception of a few photogs who can sell some of the shots). Look at how many of last year's filmers came back this year after last year's event...
Jon plays the whole "I do this for the love of the sport and my buddies" card on this and it is 100% bullshit. Do you think all the sales of those Yniq goggles is covering the $3500 a month lease on his Lambo or his beachfront Condo in Monte Carlo???? No....it must be the super lucrative contract with Head skis...bahaha. Jon is a very smart, very manipulative, very successful pro athlete. He knows exactly what he is doing. So we are supposed to feel bad that people did not seek him out to thank him for doing his job? That is how a business works. Sometimes customers aren't happy and you deal with it.
Son, I am all pro-business. I just hate it when people try to pretend that their motives are pure when they are anything but. Jon uses these kids to help grow his global brand and we are supposed to feel bad for him. He runs a business not a Philanthropy. But, I don't expect a 17 year old to understand that.
Keep believing that there is Lambo money in freeskiing...especially to someone who has not podiumed or put out a great film segment in years....

I will have to disagree with you. Jon puts a lot of his own money into JOSS, and is more than a great host for everyone in the 2 weeks. And Jon is a sick skier, having learned yet another new trick this year.

i completely agree with them when it comes down to the judging aspect of the comp. i think it should be based more on skiing than entertainment value

this, im sorry, is sick! simon and tom, you guys are the best.

Jon is so wrapped up in his comp, his money, and his buisness to notice whats going on here: he asks the most amazing skiers in the world to his home, half way accross the world, as if its their honor to be invited. Then, he makes them put his name on everything! After 12 grueling days of competition and filming, the extremely poor judging criteria sends one team home with a very large sum of moola, and the other teams home with thousands of dollars worth of plain tickets that must be paid through their own pockets... And to top it off, Jon doesnt even allow the loosing teams to release their videos until he says they can.

hey jon, shove it

Well, skiing is pretty much entertainment value, cuz if it is based more on skiing than entertainment value and fun, i guess it will become more serious than fun which turns it into a slalom thing...

And also, anyone calling out Jon on this is a complete fuckhead. I dont know and dont care if he makes money out of this event, but it is still one if not the most anticipated event for us freeskiers. And it definitily helps push the sport further and creates some of the dopest edits of the year in which the athletes in them are very beneficial. (Will this not help Schloppy' carrer in a big way?)
BOTTOM LINE THOUGHThey broke the rules and were sore losers, but doing stupid stuff happens to everyone (hopefully they will admit to being a bit retarded on this, not a half assed apology/attack)
There were some flaws with the judging criteria, like in every single judging competition. Nothing is perfect, not even this comp. Im sure some shit will be revised just like every year
Ive participated way to much in these threads and im done. It's behind us lets stop the hate and love whats going to happen in the following week instead.
The edit did kick ass

Tom and SImon need to settle the fuck down, the got to ski for a sick 2 weeks on perfect feautres on someone elses bank account and they are pissed now? Like whatever bro, we all ski for fun and now you cant because you didnt win? Thats fucking stupid they sound so damn spoiled its not funny.

I would love to see a team america consisting of peoople like schlopy, bobby and hornbeck. Simon and Tom are acting as if there is noone that could replace them, and boy are they ever off base.

I hope you realize the following:

1. none of the features was "perfect". many athletes had issues with both the stepover and the stepdown being far worse than the old perfect JOI jumps jon built in the past.

2. no one got their trips paid for. a lot of teams paid for their filmer's tickets too. even though they got free accomodation, living in sweden (food, rental cars for urban, gas, partying) is e x p e n s i v e.

3. out of 14 nights, the teams were given 3 dinners (all of which consisted of hamburgers) all the rest (breakfast, lunch, and the remaining 11 dinners had to be paid for out of their own pockets, unless they wanted to eat at Max burger (fast food burger joint), to which they all got 1000 SEK giftcards each (about 130 USD). in Sweden, thats about 15 meals, great for your body.

4. a clear set of rules were never handed out, this is why team america had issues with the judging being poorly executed and favored the wrong factors.

so all you kids saying that they are spoiled, get your heads out of the sand and jons cock out of your mouths, please, because you all seem to think they were living some kind of dream up there. you seem to have no idea how much effort goes into an edit like team americas, and not getting the reward for it probably sucked.

f u

hey so why arent lj and schlopy and all the other young guns not complaining about this ? oh cause they ski for the love of skiing maybe care about something other than first place can actually have fun and make sacrifices to go ski

just because they dont complain openly doesnt mean they werent bummed about certain aspects of the comp.

ive been hanging around åre for the last 6 J.O events and ive never seen so many unhappy ahtletes as this year.

ive never seen so many people unhappy people in skiing period then at xganes text vote which simon won so fuck off. pk and jon didnt bitch all moan they got over it6
