From 2008 there will be no more Winter X-games

Well if it was to happen, which its most likely a rumor and not going to happen, then some other competition would be added in its place, like... Orage Masters, or U.S. Open, or some big competition on the lines of those. Im sure its just a rumor also tho, before i believe it and anyone else, WE NEED PROOF!!!!

The reason why no'official' media release has been made is becasue ESPN's parent company is currently in negotiations with the other main party.....which is the Aspen Mountain Resort. These 2 parties have a contract where by Aspen Mountain would be hosting the next 4 consecutive winter x-games. The decision to not televise the event in practical terms means that the X-games event will not go ahead.

I believe the reason why ESPN has said they will not be televising the event is a dodge move to temporilary avoid their obligations under this contract with Aspen Mountain Resort. That is, although they will not be televising the event, the event itself can still take place in Aspen. This of course in practical terms means it will not as EXPN provide 90% of the financial backing which they directly recoop from advertisements during the airing of the show.

As Aspen Mountain will definetly not provide more funding for the event then they currently do the X-games will not go ahead. The next step is to close out the negotiations between the 2 parties and agree on some sort of financial remuneration for the Aspen Mountain Resort's lose of income (I'm presuming). Perhaps ESPN might throw them a bone and give them the rights to host some other sort of event (possibly in summer) for the next couple of years. Nevertheless, these are the talks that are taking place.

As far as other financial stakeholders in the event, well their contractual rights are nearly none existant and as such woud have to recoop their losses (if any) under tort law and not the common law system. This would be the least of ESPN's concerns for ending the event.

The official press release will be made when these matters have been finalised.

But one thing is for sure, X-games will no longer be happening. Perhaps we can look forward to the world championships of chess televised from the St Regis in Aspen.

If this ends up being un true.... like everysays it is.... someone am going to hunt doing the guy who made it and cut off his balls with a steak knife and then shoot him in the face, so that way he sill need a closed casket.... wait, no then I'm gonna feed his body to pigs... no wait that would ruin the pork.... I will burn his body with gasoline, yeah, that will do it.

there is no way. i dont believe that at all unless they are creating a new event to take its place. the x-games (winter and summer) are seen as the biggest extreme sporting events in the world. espn wouldn't dare, and if they did another company would take them up

No way man. X-Games was never there pushing our sport. If anything it was just a showcase of what the people could do. JOI is an example of a comp. that pushes our sport. We really don't need X-Games.

considering that a ton of people watch winter x, im sure some other tv network will pick it up.... like oln

if this is true i am going to just quit on life for an unknow amount of time...prolly until it snows then i will feel better

I seriously doubt that Ageo's original claims, for 2 reasons:

1. ESPN has a contract with Aspen/Snowmass that the Winter X Games be held at Buttermilk until the completion of the 2010 games.

2. There is no correlation between the IOC and ESPN. For halfpipe skiing to become an olympic sport, it must be sanctioned by the FIS, who must have held at least 2 world championships of the event.

Oh, and a 3rd reason:

Crowds and viewing figures broke records for 2006. ESPN would not rid of such a profitable brand, especially when they invested heavily before this january's x games to change its image.

death to espn.

skiing has progressed so mucg farther than snowboarding has, except for the case of travis rice, he rips, and we are doing way bigger, techer tricks everywhere. snowboarding in a fad. skiing is life.

Ok, you've got a great start at proof here, but its all still speculation on your part.

You need to give yourself credibility as a source, and tell us where you got this information!

Really, its well written, but you'd have to have a parent on the board of directors at ESPN or something like that...

If you were in fact close enough to the inside to know this information for fact, I'll bet you'd lose your job or be fired for posting it on an internet forum.

Information such as this is tightly held onto, and there's hell to pay for letting it out.

Now espn can have poker on 20 hours a day instead of 15. I always thought the x games were sick because even though you may say it's commercialized, ect, I doubt there's not one person who has ever competed or slid a rail that hasn't dreamed of being in the x games. There was some 40 year old dude 2 years ago in summer bmx. I love skiing no matter what other people say frown upon or ask if I have anything better to do with my time. While we are out skiing being frowned at, the rest of the country will be discussing american idol or dancing with the stars staring at their idot boxes. Peace, I can't wait to ski

yeah I would really like to know where this info is coming from?

All you've proven so far is you can write big words and have good grammatical structure. I mean come on...Aspen losing income from this? Are you aware that the world's most expensive house is in Aspen? a ranch actually...and I'm sure there aren't too many locals struggling to get by.

Don't get me wrong, the X-Games are great, I look forward to them every year...not as a competition but because instead of waiting till next fall for all the movies to come out...we get a glimpse of where the sport is now and how far guys/girls are pushing it.

Exposure is exposure, we need it

Fuck it, who cares skiing shouldn't be about how much T.V coverage and money is made anyway. it should be about you making some fuckin turns and chillin out with your friends. and thats it. And if the Olympics don't want skiing in it fuck them to we still have rad comps all over the world that we can compete against each other, the only thing were missing out on with the x games being gone is that we arn't being raped by "the man". So the forcast looks good to me.

i think this is actually a good opportunity to create a big, high profile, more mainstream event(s) that is by skiers and for skiers. though the coverage may be shitty, it is a huge resource for newschool to get its name out there. i think the skiing community along with the help of a willing TV network and some ocrporate sponsors as well could make an event that would far surpass the x games.

i call bullshit on this one.......the x games make WAY WAY too much money for them to shut it down.

i agree, the x-games problem brings in such a hugh amount of money and viewers for ESPN. I'm pretty sure this is not true.

This is not true at all who in the right mind believes the X Games are over you think that ESPN would just throw this out the window and end it.....hahaha....thats the most retarded thing ive ever heard obviously someone would buy the rights for lots of money...comon people lets be logical...o and i doubt that ESPN would drop the games
