From 2008 there will be no more Winter X-games

Today is a dark day for skiing and it's recognition as a 'real sport'.

It has been announced today that ESPN will no longer be covering the winter x-games due to "resource demands and other priorities" said the spokesman for the corporate board of ESPN. As the X-games are a product of EXPN this means that the event will no longer be held.

In addition, recognition by the International Olympic committee for freestyle skiing as a sport worthy of the an Olympic event (such as halfpipe) is now extremely unlikely. This will be the case for at least the 2010 Vancouver games.

Despite the amount of viewers, supporters and participants in skiing today, it appears that competition row, sham, bow is a better sport.

Hmm , since there is nothing i can do im gonna accept it and look at the good side, skiing wil become somewhat underground for a few more years and continue to own on everyone. Then the "Cool" thing to do will be snowboard again.

In 2008 there will be no more sports due to all professional athletes dying in a classified class called suspicious death.

because there's no X-Games you think pipe skiing will never make it to the olympics? do you have downsyndrome or something?

so now skiing won't be used as a whore by espn to make money. i like the idea!

as for the olympics, look how long it took for snowboarding (both racing and pipe) to be let into the olympics. then once it happened our good friend ross rebagliati won the gold and tested positive for marijuana! you think cancelling the X-Games hurt skiing? freeskiers, i know you don't want to here this, are viewed as snowboarders and im sorry but if a snowboarder does something bad, it carries over to here.

fuck, know im gonna fail planning, i put compete in the x games as one of my lifetime goals. Damn school.

if espn drops it im pretty sure another corporation will try and pick it up. its not like the x games are some small little event theres alot of viewers and alot of companys endorse it and shit.

good, the x games have been fucking retarded for a loooong time now. both the summer and winter games just pander to the 12-14 yr olds who buy anything theyre told is cool. the games are rediculously hyped, really arent the biggest event of the year (they do pay well though), and they push further the stereotypes and segregations in the action sports that dont need to be there.

dont get me wrong, it sucks skiing will lose that coverage. but skiing is going in so many good directions right now, none of which involve anything that would/could be in the xgames, and the games just straight up suck. sal masakela sold his soul for a slim jim.

Confirm it. I don't beleive a word until I see an official press release.

Not that this really has a major effect on what happens internally at espn...but they just signed a 7 year deal with aspen for winter x. Sooo that would lead me to beleive they had intentions of continuing as of last year. I guess it's possible that things change?

fuck espn, why would you want them to represent anyhting we do? its like supporting nike, just DONT do it.

haha.. but seriously, this sport shouldnt go to the olympics. sure it would be fun to watch, but its every 4 years.. like its not worth getting pissed off about, their loss if they dont put it in becuase they would have alot more people watching becuase of the originality of "skiers" going in a halfpipe.. i dont think they can even ride backwards yet?? can they?

Dude x games sold out along ass time ago. Now all there are about is making money and shit.

good. last year was rigged beyond belief! they only cater to whoever has the biggest hype. fuck x games, im boycotting until its gone

Yeah, you're totally right... I think there's absolutely no proof to the statement of the X-games being cancelled.

I searched the ESPN site a bunch and no mention...

Come on people, don't believe a rumour until you have proof!

And don't start them until you have proof either.

The X-Games were lame anyway.

It was just a big Right Guard Xtreme (with the power stripe!) add with a little snowboarding and FMX once in a while...

True dat. All we know is that one kid said this, one kid with no proof...and everyone else believes him....nuff said.

True or not, I really don't give a damn, I'll keep skiing just like a always have, I don't even like most comps, people do the same run over and over again but spin the opposite direction as the last guy, back country is where it's at, we all know it...after skiing back country I don't even have a huge desire to ski park anymore, it just can't compare.

i don't thiink skiing will go underground just because of no more Winter X, alot of other sports are going to miss out watching other sports they love as well.

considering that this is probably just a rumor, but what evs here is my take in the X games.....They suck, they are way to Glorified, and in a way im getting sick of the same old shit year in and year out. only thing that changes are the logos and some of the riders, but the announcers are horrible, and its just one big marketing pitch...... BUT! i do enjoy them for the level of riding that skiers show during these events. i amoung with probably everybody on this site is glued to the TV during skiing pipe, (big air is a joke)... Something i would hope to see if this rumor is true, and even if it is not, is to see more grass roots skiing comps televised.. ie. us open, the masters, the back nine if it happens again. the events that only get maybe 30 seconds on TV, Those are the comps that i want to watch. not the freaking X games. imagine the publicity and visablity if the us open, and the masters where covered with the equivalency of the X games. it would be amazing!

idk, think what you think, i could care less about the X games, as long as more of the other events get more TV time and coverage

man soooo many talkers on this thread its not even funny, all we talked about was X and how so and so maybe got screwed but tanner and tj actually did OK and won, remember the slopestyle course last year? 50foot gap to flat down? I know there are other super progressive comps out there but X pushed it last year, weather just screwed them. I like watching the X-games, if espn drops them they will be out a lot of money

yea i agree. at first i thought, oh fuck no more x-games... and then i realized this guy had given us absolutely no proof and that the whole idea was extremely unlikely

yeah, where's the proof, nothing on espn.com, expn.com or even google and if it's not on google yet then it can't be legit

Wouldn't matter about the drug testing man, the IOC doesn't consider marijuana to be a performance enhancing drug so it is just on the restricted list, not the banned substance list. Just this last year they released some report that said like 95% of the US snowboard team admitted to smoking during the Olympics.

ya i heard there were no more x games because tanner hall, dumont, shaun white, and a bunch other droped all their sponsers and started to skiblade so the x-games will become a skiblade comp and that all

that percentage is physically impossible considering there wa like 6 ppl on the team meaning for there to be a 95% there need ot be at least 20 pll on the team therefore u made that pecentage up!!! LOLZ jk i dont care

i dont care. the only time i really did care that winter x was happening was when it was on tv...and i think that expn somwhat ruined the sport atleast at the competition...im sure its just a rumor

the xgames are scheduled till atleast 2010.. its a contract with aspen and espn... so dont believe that its over...

on another note... bmx is added to the olympics... skiin is next son..
