Freeze, Unfrozen!

Hey all! Well, despite the tremendously shitty news that corporate sloths at Time 4 closed Freeze Magazine, (my favorite by far), so they can get more money for their other half ass ski publications (i.e. Ski and Skiing), there is some good news. depending on you that is. I work for a major publishing family in New York, and I am from Whistler and my first love is skiing. Anyway, this family has developed many other major magazines and publications and is very interested in picking up where Freeze left off. Of course, this is a very hard place to just pick up and go from. Freeze had many years of loyal readership under their belt and a lot of time to get contributors etc. take it to the level it was. Now I know a lot of you had issues with certain sections of the magazine. Specifically the half ass writing in the very limited articles that they had, not to mention the Brad Holmes page. I personally enjoyed a lot of the stupid 'pooh' humor that made up most issues, but didn't really vibe with Holmes still getting a section this many years later. Regardless. I feel that with your input, and support, a new magazine could very well be in the works and very soon. I would like to address a few points though. Please ask away and I will try and answer all the questions etc. in regards to the new mag soon.

1)Although petitioning helps make our point be know, I very much doubt that Time Warner, Time 4, or Transworld will give a shit and they almost certainly will not reverse this decision. They are a big leauge publisher and want numbers to be much larger ala 'Home and Garden' or 'Golf Digest.'

2)Although a petition will help in the creation of a new magazine and in the faster creation of that magazine. I will goto Petition Online and create on this weekend. I encourage you to spend 1 min and sign up to it. I will post the link in this thread. This will help my publisher move ahead faster.

3)Section Ideas. People you would rather read about or hear from in the magazine. Also, any other features, ideas, stories, etc.

4)Subscription sign up's. This is of huge importance to publishers. If I could get a large list of people willing to subscribe right off the bat, they would go into production immediately. Would people be willing to do this? Obviously with a money back quarantee.

Anyway, I this email is no where near complete on my part! I have to run right now, but will be back shortly to answer questions and tell you more about this. I would just like to say that this is a serious void in the ski industry, (Freeskier and Powder mags aside), and I intend to fill it. I hope you guys help. Cya.

Right on!! Someone on the inside doing something to help out the situation. I'll be your first suscriber if you want.

Yeah. That's great Thanks man. Just a quick note though.

Please, dont post your address or credit info, or any personal info, for that matter quite yet. There will be a secure site set up for all that and it's not advisable to post it. Thanks.

Hey, it's cool, they're starting an ATV Magazine to fill the void left by FREEZE...paragraph 3!

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- Time Inc.'s Time4Media shuttered two titles Nov. 1 and internally announced plans to start up another, a spokeswoman said yesterday.

Time4Media's action-sports unit TransWorld told staffers that it would cease publishing its youth-skewing active sports ski title Freeze and its TransWorld BMX title. Resources and staffers from TransWorld BMX will be shifted to another title, Ride BMX and related areas, and the shuttering of Freeze would result in a loss of eight staffers, the spokeswoman said.

Next spring, according to the spokeswoman, TransWorld will launch an as-yet-untitled magazine devoted to the all-terrain-vehicle.

'Despite our best efforts and continued investment, Freeze's target audience has not proved large enough to grow to the level necessary for the magazine to be viable moving forward,' read a statement from TransWorld Group's publisher. Brad McDonald.

The January 2005 issue will be Freeze's last. Freeze's total circulation was around 54,000. TransWorld BMX's circulation was slightly below 50,000 and Ride BMX's is 51,000.

^ hell yeah hire the prvious employees continue getting feedback (i.e. this post) and kill it...I am in.

Only suggestion is free subscriptions are great for us but money keeps you around. Freeze may have botched that one with half this site getting the mag for free. Whatever works though...gt er done!

anyone notice that in the captions for a lot of pictures in freeze they would give the history of some place or say something that had nothing to do with the trick or person? i would rather see captions or articles about how people go about doing the tricks or how a day was on a tour or something.

Send it

Yes, ex Freeze staffers will be contacted shorly. I am currently trying to get work from the big boss man over at Transworld in regards to the closure etc. An ATV mag. HA HA.

Keep the support coming. This thread is being shown to the decision makers!

I will buy it.

What freeze lacked was anything artistic. I did make some of that up in humor. A magazine that had a good combination of artistic ideas, with oringinal content(photos, stories ie. 'axis'), and a good laugh, would be amazing. I would not mind a magazine the size of Axis if it were to come out every month rather than every three months.

Issues over the summer would be awsome too, like just one to check in with the readers, and keep there 'stoke' alive. I would also like to see lifestyle shots.

Thanks for allowing us to put some input down.

^ Your right. It sounds like alot of people want to see a mag that converges the content of 2Freeski Mag with the humor of Freeze? Correct.

And Fronty's right, keep the support to this thread coming. I will show it in a day or so to the big wiggs.

did anyone notice that ride bmx circulation was smaller than freeze's and they aren't axing it?

skiing is for little fat kids

This sounds good.. I would help out and maybe get a subscription too.

AS far as changes go.. I think the magazine should be a little more seriouse. Not like boring, but not have every caption a joke etc.

And give a section to people in the industry to vent about things that they dont like.

thanks for your work towards everything..

awesome idea. I'd be in

Skiing influences my life way too much, I can be at some surf spot where theres not any snow at all and I walk by this resturant and I'll see a hand rail outside it and I'll have a thought that how can I get snow out here to slide this rail. Which is absolutly super stupid- Jon Olsson

I as well.

Would they remain in the publication realm, or be willing to get involved with sponsoring events? ie: USFO, or a large venue park setup? Not that it has a bearing on whether I would subscribe, but just curious.

So Who's the Jacuzi Casanova?

That's him right there. They call him that cause he was all up in it...lovin' it strong.

I would probbably subscribe

It'd be cool though if they made like a small trial issue or something so i could see how i like it

i'd subscribe for sure. if you guys have a website where we can see what the magazine will look that would be great. thanks for doing this for us!

Ya, FREEZE was awesome, but kind of repetitive at times. What you are suggesting is an awesome idea, and for my two cents I would add that the mag should mix it up a bit; more photos one issue, more sotires a different issue, etc. Be creative. Oh, and I'll grab a subscription.

'Growing Young'

i'd be a subscriber for sure if you were planning on circulating the magazine in Canada.

pick up some of the Freeze staff, make a few changes and you'll have a kick ass mag

i've been getting freeze for a while now and i think that one of their problems is that though their articles are spread over many aspects of the freeskiing world i would rather an article that focused more in depth on whatever it may be. i'd be a definite subscriber

'you aren't actually supposed to pay to go skiing, some people just don't get that.'- tumble

I'd get a subscription.

The boyd thing is a good idea, and same to getting the 8 original people back. There are some things that you really need in the mag, 1. a lot of really good photos. 2. An article or section by a pro or 2(different pros each issue)that would write it, and they could write about anything ski related, just to get a pros point of view on stuff. 3. More interviews, instead of the one interview in the pofiles they had each issue. 4. Tons of posters. 5. Well written articles about something no one really knows about. EX: articles on people are doin newschool stuff in the SE and NZ, Austrailia, and S Amer.(haven't seen hardly anything on these locations and what's going down) or an article on Exotic ski trips, like the trips to South Africa or Iceland that were in RedTape. 6. Just more pro in put.

I'd subscribe...

Despite the sterotype of freeskiers being young and dumb, we do enjoy reading articles that are well written about things related to the freeskiing industry. LOL, ya, last time I checked, weren't photos supposed to contain a caption relative to the photo!? Brad Holmes section was always dissappointing :(

Go big or go home

GREAT! He was very impressed with this thread. Keep the support going. Please don't just read. Post that you'll subscribe, that is if you would!

Thanks Guys.
