Freeze Magazine

November 3, 2004

Oceanside, Calif. (Ski Press)-This is the official statement released by TransWorld Media’s Group Publisher Brad McDonald in regards to the company’s decision to close the doors on Freeze Magazine.

The decision was made Monday morning, and will result in the loss of jobs for eight full-time employees (including founder Mike Jaquet and adman Allen Crolius) and three part-time photographers who did the majority of their shooting for the magazine. Skipressworld.com will provide continuing coverage on how the move will affect the youth-oriented ski market later this week.

Here’s the statement: “Despite our best efforts and continued investment, FREEZE’s target audience has not proven large enough for FREEZE’s circulation to grow to the level necessary for the magazine to be viable moving forward. Significantly broadening FREEZE’s editorial focus while remaining true to the target audience was not a practical alternative.

The staff of FREEZE produced an excellent magazine and is not allowing its closing to diminish their pride in a job well done. Please be assured that the January issue will be among our finest and will fulfill our commitments to our readers and advertisers.

As a result of FREEZE’s closure, as well as continued efforts to best allocate resources, improve focus, and streamline reporting, a total of eight positions are being eliminated

There are several serious legal issues regarding terminating this magazine. They must first reimburse their sponsors, then they have a responsibility to those who have valid paid subscriptions. Those are contracts which must be paid in full unless Transworld files for bankruptcy. This is why it seems so off that they would not finish out this cycle of subscriptions.

in all honesty, we really are a small and fairly conceited niche market. it'd be a real shame to see freeze die, but who gives a fuck really. skiing will continue and something unreliant on snowboarders will arise like a pheonix. i really did like freeze above all others though. shameful...

i'm sure some entrepreneurial fuckers (such as myself) are already plotting. i've been wanting to ressurect rant for a while now, this is just further impetus to do so.

 
it's not just about the magazine, its a huge blow for the sport to take right now. In the past couple years freeskiing has soared in numbers. Out east teen skiers are finaly out numbering teen snowboarders. Freeze helped sponsor a lot of events and photo shoots, helped bring a lot of smaller skiers into the spotlight, and had some funny articles. My entire study hall last year waited for my copy, none of them skied, but it was really funny so everyone wanted to read it. It's really too bad.

It is not IF we should get our money back. It is when can we get our money back. They must ether reimburse you or give you credit towards equal goods. If those cocksuckers expect us to transfer our subscriptions over to transworld. then they have got to be kidding themselves.

what no one seems to get is that freeze was NOT making money, and it was not growing in readers. if you look at it from a business standpoint it makes sense to cut them loose. so all these dreams about a new magazine might be ill-concieved, our breed is too small, and freeze just couldnt support itself on our small percentage of skiers, so why could any other mag? Axis met the same demise for the same reasons

 
what about the us open and the east coast freeskiing open?? Because these are freeze sponsored events, are they still happening?????

HOW DO WE GET OUR MONEY BACK? THIS IS A SERIOUS LEGAL ISSUE. It took me forever to convince my dad to buy freeze for me, so i really need to get this money back. They can't just say you aren't getting your money back, that is entirely illegal.

 
freeze was good for skiing and im sad to see it go , i remember geting the 1st issue ever the dirty dozen when i was like 12 in jackson hole and being so stoked there was a freeskiing mag, and i still have the poster on my wall of moesleys 1st 1080 mute but in all honesty freeze's content sucked ass i just read the whole october issue in 13 mins thats not a real magazine, they have like 3 shity articles a gay interview and thats it, dont get me wrong ill miss freezez photos and its bad for skiing but can you blame people for not buying it its a piece of shit editoricly and is full of way to many adds.

Jaquet was more then qualified to have this guy's job. In an apparent flex of his executive muscle, he cuts out FREEZE, the entire FREEZE staff, and Jaquet and Crolious, the two skiers who worked for THE WHOLE of Transworld. Suspicious. Of course FREEZE's numbers aren't in line with Transworld Snowboarding or Skateboarding, but the shit was still growing. Confusing.................-schmies

aussiepimp ads are what will make an ad iteresting most good magazines are all short: every transworld magazine is short but the ads are what make it seem so large, we need ads.

 
the january issue better be a good 400 pages, alot less crap of ads, and a shit load of good pictures. they'll refund us but aghhhh so fucking gay

I Suggest the the January Issue be nothing less than a 5 Book set. It should collect on all previous freezes..go over the tragedy..and have mad photos, articles, and trick tips.

Yeah, no matter what Transworld says, I still don't see the logic in this. With Freeskiing being as young a sport as it is, the magazine was quite obviously growing, and probably growing faster than any of us knew. That's a real dick move by Transworld to cut the entire staff.

Although Freeze was probably not making much money, the TW guys still did not do the right thing, they bought Freeze, I think it was originally here in Boulder then it moved then it was bought by TW a year ago, then a year later they shut it down. That is not cool, buy it and shut it down??????? Why?????????? Cuz they are jackasses and dont really care. And TW is owned by AOL Time Warner, so someone in the really really higher ups might have said something about Freeze not making their salary any bigger so it had to go.

I was thinking the same thing... This is one of the bullshit moves that come about in a corporation though, believe me FREEZE was probably the smallest publication TW had, their office space was so small it was funny. I really don't know if we can do much to save FREEZE as to encourage those guys to press on and start an independent mag outside of corporate circles.

You could tell FREEZE was going down with some of the newer issues and how they were put out, but damn it waas still a kickass mag., and they need to put a lot of fucking work into this jan issue to make the best ever im talking hard back cover and everything, and some swag or refunds for subscriptions...it sucks we have to see them go though!

i'm still in denial over the whole thing. freeze has been a pillar of the whole freeskiing movement practically from the beginning, and just on a whim, the higher ups of some corperate machine decide that they don't need it anymore. personally i think it's a fucking stupid move on the part of transworld - they just bought freeze at the end of the season before last, and now, only a year later, they're cutting it loose. makes me wish that the guys at freeze never agreed to sell to transworld.

the dilly: unlike freeskier, freeze didn't have an heir to billions of dollars as an editor-in-chief. It's much easier to justify slim profit margins to your dad than to a corporation like Time Warner.

damn got my first FReeze at mountainside grocery in carabasset maine when i was just a little one. Mom was NOT stoked about the "lifty of the week" page lmao, eventually she let my older brother buy them, we LOVED that shit. 18 years later and we're both still hucking for absolutely no reason lol
