Everybody in skiing needs to band together to stop magazines such as Freeze from trying to decide who's cool and who's not.

Magazines should be more like newspapers, they should simply report on whats happening in our sport. Because it is our sport not theirs. the people who make decisions at Freeze are not necesarily skiers. Most of the people who write and make decisions about our sport havent even really been involved in it except on a weekend warrior basis.

I'm not writing this only due to Michas review of scandalous, but because of all the other decisions that Freeze feels that they can make.

People who happen to live near the Freeze office at Fronrange CO resorts also have an unfair advantage, simply because of location rather than actual skill, style, or any other factor.

So whenever Freeze or any magazine starts to make decisions about our sport it is our resposibility to make sure that they know about it, and that were not gonna stand for it. Its our sport not theirs. If it wasnt for all the kids all over the world that love to ski then they wouldnt have shit. And they need to have respect for that.

you should seriously check out SBC Skier. That is one kick ass magazine. they don't cover it with hot chicks like Freeskier to get kids to buy it (although they do have pictures of nakid chicks - just 'cause it's Canadian and cooler than all the other magazines)... doesn't need the phonyness (sp?) of Freeze (and Freeze is just an expensive picture book.. the content kinda sucks.. and the US Open was terribly orginized).

SBC Skier is a perfect mix between the unknown and the big names, park skiing and big mountain... it tells it like it is, doesn't pick favorites, and isn't fake. SBC Snowboard Canada is another kick ass magazine that's definitly worth the read (the spring issue this year was about the size of a local phone book).

yea.. skier mag is pretty good..most mags are just pictures and a bunch of crap..i actually want to be informed when i buy a magazine. when i buy freeze, im done looking at everything after like 20 mins. total waste of 5 bucks

It's not that he is looking for another magazine to read, it's that he wants everyone to know this about Freeze. Personally, I agree with as much as truly know about the situation, I can't speak for all of it. But as far as I can tell it seems that this intervention is not far fetched.

yeah definently dude...freeze has some of this shittiest content, and they do opinionate...its really only good for the pictures and occasional posters and stickers

 
I agree about freeze. You can see this crap popping up all over everwhere, one example being music. They really don't care about the reader, they try to make this or that popular or this cool and he's a sellout. People should stop trying to sell people thier OWN opinion and just report the facts.

I still like Freeze for the pictures but the writing is crap. I like skiing and music but its sad what people are doing to the sport these days.

Another sweet mag is Exposed, not much writing but its free and the pics a really sick. Good old Teton Gravity Research.

yeah i totally agree. i buy mags partly for the pics, but a lot for the INFO. i want to know what's happening in the ski world, not just 2 lines about some comp in whistler. i want the lifestyle and the ski stuff. a lot like freeze's article on philou last month or 2 months ago, but even more. peace

 
Though FREEZE can have a very positive side, they don't pay respect to most of the athletes in the industry, bum-fumble the names of tricks, patrinize only certain riders, and in general don't know their ass from their elbow.

EX: Derek Finn at Parka-sore-ass hit the elbow kink rail...sw. 270 on to a parfect landing. Because he refused to pay $150 bucks for food that he didn't eat and a pass, FREEZE placed it on the website as Philou, a direct smack to Derek.

I wanna hear about all the athletes who are killing it, not just Tanner, CR, Jon, and the rest (no disrespect to the latter).

They do stuff like that a lot. Sometimes it's funny and all that stuff but like in the article putting down that DC did a flat 1080 in the pipe. Ya sorta funny but I'm sure there were tons of people that want the real story.

Don't get me wrong though, I love freeze and they have certainly done ten times as much good as detriment thats for sure, but in order to succeed in anything there has to be the occasional critique.

if you let a mag decide who is cool then you have a prob. decide for your self some of the coolest pros are the ones who chill with normal kids. Freeze is simply saying who they think is cool and all its there right. come on its in the constitution....freedom of speach.

Do you know where that footage came from? People like me, berman, Steve, etc, and they give us no credit on their site for shooting it, but then we have to include all this elaborate bullshit in our videos stating that freeze magazine produces parasaurus for the athletes yada yada ya.

 
I wasn't giving Freeze any credit I was just letting those who didn't know that there was footage on the site.

I knew that guy didn't look like Philou. That sucks!! Freeze is totally taking over the industry and it completely sucks ass! There magazine is getting smaller and smaller by the issue yet the subscription rate is definately not. Total bullshit. I think that alot of magazines are starting to do this, especially Freeze and Freeskier, its annoying when you buy a subscription to Freeskier to get pages filled with half articles, half advertisements. This is what the ski industry is turning into! All these bullshit advertisements are just the start, I mean snowboarding is cool and all, but what the hell? Why is there snowboard ads in my sad excuse for a skiing magazine, If I wanted to see snowboarding advertisements I would have bought a snowboarding magazine, (Note:I have nothing against snowboarding, we should take a lesson from them).

I think that right now Powder is the most true to our sport. Even though this magazine is mostly backcountry, moreso than newschool stuff, it is a really good magazine and continues to use the motto 'for the skiers, by the skiers', and actually mean it.

As much as magazines and movies influence our sport they are hardly vital to it. Skiing is about skiing, whether your a park rat or a powderhound you can appreciate the value of un-influenced skiing.

freeze totally licks balls when you compare it to any snowboard magazine. Half the time i buy snowboard magazines, because their pictures and content are so much better. I feel like i'm reading a flyer when i pick up an issue of Freeze. All the articles are half assed too, my thirteen year old brother writes at a higher level. Skiing is in dying need for a decent magazine, SBC Skier isn't too bad and that first issue of axis had potential.

 
I completely agree about the snowboarder magazine point. Now, I get Freeskier and Transworld Snowboarding, simply because I like the interviews and pictures in TW. TW is also about 4 times as thick as Freeskier or Freeze, and is of much higher quality. It took a while for snowboarding magazines to get this good, we can only hope that skiing mags will eventually get that good too.

If you guys want an example of professionalism, look to Freeskier Magazine's treatment of the athletes at the Sunday River shoot this past week, and contrast that with the unprofessional handling of numerous issues at FREEZE Magazine's Parkasaurus...

 
i get freeskier and freeze, freeskier has great support for the athletes and representing our sport well but freeze is just funny i guess, u dont really learn much by reading it but its just fun to look at.

Freeze... not a good magazine at all. Sure it's pretty to look at, but it has no depth. The report on competitions that happened months ago that the world already has known about. I'd like to ee FREEZE and Freeskier opwn a Transworld Snowboarder and immitate that, because that is high quality stuff. Sure, you can keep the humor and all, but add stuff to. Make the magazine have depth. Give interviews to up-and-comers, and show the future of the sport as well as the present. I always feel cheated when I get my Freeze and I'm don and bored with it in 20 minutes. and it's gotta stop.

yea. FREESKIER is the best of all.

SKIER does diffrent type of skiing sometimes and pretty gib because of that.

But Freeze o.k because of there posters. but there should be a mag with better posters not just pics with adds in the pic. anybody know one?

freeze is made by transworld, who makes TW SNow and TW Skate, i hope that one day it will be as big as those magazines

look...i dont doubt you guys, but can i get some examples of freeze picking favorites, and saying who is cool and who is not? cuz i could just be an idiot, but i havent picked up on it much.....

 
I would point out more details and examples but i'm not one to talk trash on individuals. there are many crews all over the country and the world that ski better than the kids in freeze. even on a day to day basis without cameras. Mammoth is a prime example, If you got out into the park this year you would have seen, some of the best skiing in the world, and it wasnt even captured on film.

Sean Howard, Switch Rodeo 9's over 70 feet with steez. like nothing....what up!!!!! noone even filmed it. and there are kids all over the world that kill it day in and day out with no exposure. and the reason why they are not being filmed or published is not because they arent good enough, its because when mags recieve the photos and they havent heard of the kids they overlook the photos. and many photographers will not waste film on no name kids because they know that it will not be published. this is bullshit.

hey,

i think freeze is pretty cool and so are all the other magazines just because have some hope for the future of skiing. Although, sure they overpublish pics of the same tricks in jonny d movies but with skiing its hard to have separate photo shoots (other than parkasauraus) because its super expensive. It is not necessarily freeze that sucks, but the ski industry right now. Face it, our sport is a bunch of rich as californian spoiled bitches. They control the scene because they have money to hit up western competitions and do whatever else they do. Squaw and mammoth riders are good, don't get me wrong, but its rather boring to see the same jumps, over and over, with the same damn tricks. Also, companies are cheap ass, which doesn't allow an increase of professional skiers and a higher rate of pay for those who are sponsored. Ski companies treat skiers like shit, i don't care how many products they give out. Snowboarders make easily twice as much in salary than skiers. Its just not sparking any creativity because so many skiers have to worry about how they can eat instead of concentrating on developing new tricks and so forth. The industry is gay because most of the skiers out there are gay. companies need to quite trying to market images and start marketing skill. I say this because there are skiers in michigan that can't get exposure because they live where nobody cares. and for that matter, we don't care about them (note, freeze has supported the midwest and continues to do so....not talking about them).

What i'm saying is that freeze insn't responsible for crappy content, because all skiing content sucks right now. And until companies start representing skiers who don't do D spins, snowboarders will continue to laugh at us.

well, freeze can do whatever they want(1st amendment), and if you base how cool different kinds of skiing are based a 40 page magazine, then your as shallow as they are. they do diss on the midwest a shitload, but you know what, i dont care, because they are right, im in tahoe right now, and the level of skiing here is sooooooooo much higher, (both mountain and skiers) im sorry to say scott, but they are right sometimes, theres so many more good skiers out here, but i dontr really care what freeze says, the midwest has some riders, but face it, the west will kick our asses,

I thought the last issue of FREEZE with the tanner and evan raps interview was a really bad issue. tanner is talking shit about Turpin, to me thats just immature, why publish something like that, that is going to ruin someone's reputation (i am refering to tanner saying that Turpin needs to learn how to ski)

I also feel that half the stuff i read in FREEZE i already heard about or know. for example i already bought all my ski movies at the begining of the year and then a month later FREEZE writes a review on them

However I think that the freezeonline.com website is really good. it gives info on comps one or two days after the comp, unlike the mag thats way outdated.

one of the things i really like about freeskier is Plake's Picks cause they highlight skiers that arent big yet. like the last issue they highlighted this girl (shit i forgot her name... and i am too lazy too look at the mag) and i thought that was really cool cause FREEZE really only highlights people that we have already heard about.
