Freestyle skiing

Hi guys,

This is gonna be a shitty thread, but here we go.

I'm a skier from The Netherlands, and this year I started with the basics off freestyling. I suck at it pretty much, I can only do a 360 and some boxes, and I am searching for a camp, or something like that, to learn new tricks/skills, since it is pretty hard to ski in The Netherlands. I couldn't find much on the internet, so I thought I could make a random thread here and see what would happen. I prefer something in Europe (like Austria or Switzerland), because otherwise the road will take to long. Is there anyone who can help me out and knows something like a camp or training week?

honestly, a camp isnt going to help you a significant amount more than if you just skied more and more. over time, your gonna get better. its a matter of how hard you push yourself. you dont necessarily need a camp to progress.

I think riding some glacier for a few weeks rather than pay for a camp is more worth it for overall development but I can understand if you are a minor and need adult supervision. A week won't help you improve much unless you are already far up on the progression chain or have a 1on1 coach. there's lots of camps in europe -https://www.redbull.com/ca-en/best-ski-summer-camps-in-europe

Yeah I kind of know that a camp is not something where you will learn the most, and I try to ski as much as possible but that's pretty hard in the Netherlands since we don't have any snow. And I thought a camp would also be nice because you will get to know some other people from my own age. But still thanks for your comment.

If you are young like under 21 the camps seem like a prettty cool deal. I haven't been but they are really popular at Mt. Hood. Anything is possible especially if you are young. Spring is actually the best season because the snow is deepest and the crowds are the smallest but you can ski all year around here.

To bad it isn't in Europe, but it sounds really nice so I will definitely keep it in my mind.

What! Camps in Norway looks pretty rad, they’ve got water ramps as well as a glacier park. So reckon that will bring on your skiing a bit

Hi! I actually disagree that camp won't help much. Coaching can be a huge benefit to your skiing, if you can afford it. I know there is a good indoor park in the Netherlands, I'm sure you're aware of that. There is also snowpark Bispingenhttp://snowpark-bispingen.com/ , I think it is near Hamburg Germany.

There are several glaciers in Austria, France and Switzerland and in Norway where there are camps. Here are links to a few:

Sounds more like you need some skiing friends... Throwing money at skiing doesnt make you any better or enjoy in more.

Yes skiing with friens would be more fun, but that is not why I'm looking for a camp. I really want to get better with skiing.

This is where a piece of wisdom helps; Skiing is not an end, its simply a means.

It means that skiing well isnt a goal at all, but a method of progression. Your not supposed to be an awesome skier, you have to work at it and have fun while you do it. The fun sits in the progression to a trick, an not particularly the trick itself.

Success isnt a straight line. There are set backs, crashes, bad days, shit seasons... As long as you felt you day was worth coming out for; you had a great day. It took me 10 years to land a cork 720. I mastered moguls, became a coach, ski instructor, mentored people in the park and pushed my rail game. It took all those steps to finally land the trick safely. As I look back on the moment of an achieved goal, the process of learning it was so much fun. I didnt need a coach or pay money to learn it; I spent weeks alone in the park practicing 540s and hiking back up just get comfortable in the air. It wasnt all park; I would break the day up and put down some good turns and slam some bumps to change it up. Friend would help me keep the stoke going; the effort has to come from within though.

Good thread title.

Don’t take it too serious, stay loose && have fun.

Work your way up the spin chart with butters

Almost everything is a 2 hour or more drive for me, except Neuss (Germany), but last time I was there they didn't had twin tips to rent and I don't have my own skis (yet). So it is pretty hard for me to go skiing somewhere for just a day.

this might be kind of harsh but its just the truth. a large amount of people on this sight don't fucking have a hill in their back yard to lap every day. if you want to ski, you got to go do it. making annoying trips is all part of the sport and the only way your going to get better at it is by taking part. I made the three hour drive up to vermont every saturday by myself just so i could ski. you said that most places around you are over two hours away. Just send it. its all a part of the sport. also if your just getting into park, you really don't need twin tips yet.

Im not trying to sound like a rat or anything but it seems like everyone is giving you the same advice on this thread, but you have an excuse for all of them. long story short, if you want to ski and progress, you need to make sacrifices. thats the bottom line.

I know, but we don't have any mountains, neither snow where I live.

There are ways around it. I lived in southern Ontario for 3 years because of school; 15cm total annual snowfall and the best you can do is Blue Mountain 2 hrs from Toronto, and another hour for traffic just to get there. Im sure people will relate. I was lucky to be in a rural town one hour away from the ski hill, but not having a car is an obstacle.

So this is how I skied even if getting there was the hardest part. I used ebay for cheap setups, befriended shop owners to get discounts...anything to save a buck.

Getting to the hill took creativity. When it snowed, I would go to the skatepark and set up a jump on a rail. Sometimes I would do some urban riding on just about anything. Really, sometimes I didnt have to leave town.

You have advertisment in local papers or local websites you can put up; find someone in your area that will carpool you. Find friends that live near the mountain and just crash at their place. Rent out a room for a weekend when you can. My ride was this random sketchy dude asking anyone near him if they snowboard, then on to the next until he found me. His plan was crazy, but it worked.

If you have a lot of time on your hands and cant ski, send mass messages, texts... anything; even go to a local ski shop to get help.

Agressive inline skating is an alternative to skiing. I ride DH bikes on days I cannot ski.

Oh shit sorry man I didn’t read your whole post. My apologies. I’m from the states so I don’t know of any camps over there but it’s good to see people like u getting into park with less-than-ideal conditions

There’s no way you’re gonna learn more at a camp than spending your entire winter on he mountain.

You will learn more skiing 100 days than skiing 1 day. Solid logic

Honestly, it sounds like OP will benefit greatly from a ski camp. First off its a great way to meet people that you can shred with in the future. It is also the best way to lay down the foundations for your progression. You need to know the basics. This will be the best place to learn the basics because you will get instant feedback. Instead of crashing over and over and posting to NS in the hope that someone will type a worthy response.
