Freestyle better than racing paper

My friend is writing a paper about this. She said she needed some good ideas, this is what she sent me on fb: "Why is feestyle skiing better than racing? Give me some complaints about racers and why they are horrible...writing a paper and I need ideas"

your friend is an idiot. dont shit on racing/racer, explain why freestyle allows for more self-expression and creativity.

last season I took a run down the race course before they closed everything off for the event and I was like this is so easy and I was bookin it.

racing-you don't get to do what you want. all you do is go through gates. freeskiing-you can do what you want and be creative

your friend is a moron.....i love how freeskiers hate racers so much. When in reality probably 80% of freeskiers are pretty awful skiers outside the park. Iv seen so many kids at the mountain who throw down a decent run but can't ski for shit. Racing develops skill. Park riding is so much easier than a good racer.

i agree that his friend is a moron for writing a paper on this. At the same time it's pretty easy to make fun of a group of people who choose to wait until the groomers come out on a powder day. Racing's more of a competitive sport, it's a completely different view of skiing than freestyle

every racer i have ever skied with loves to ski pow, because they have actual skiing ability, isnt it the kids on ns that sit and hike rails in 2 feet of pow because they cant ski for shit

i'm not taking sides but i've seen heaps of park skiers skip pow days to lap park. it's beyond me why anyone would do that, especially in NZ with the 2 pow days a year

My view on racing (i did it 1 year in hs) is that its waiting in line for an hour to ski on ice. In racing your not uising the terain to be creative or to express your self everybody follows the same damn path and you have to listen to dumb 50 year olds who go out west to ski groomers at dear valley (i hate those guys) tell you what to do. In racing there is a right and wrong in freeskiing you are FREE.

Youre actually wrong when it comes to the "dumb" 50 year olds who only ski groomers. Most good coaches can be anywhere from right out of college (21-22) all the way to past 60. They SHRED. The head of my old program was in a sit ski, and he fucking made that thing look easy in ANYTHING. These coaches will also stress that the mountain is the best coach. You slack on the mountain, you will never make it in a course. Terrain in the woods and even in moguls will destroy you if you have poor style. My old coach (Ben Moody for anyone who follows DH Biking), is a RIDICULOUSLY good skier. I have never seen someone shred so hard in all conditions. He loves it when we get days to just ski because he says no matter how much you like or dislike racing, all he wants is to foster a love of skiing.

And to make a point about right and wrong in racing, thats right, but its the same in freestyle. You get penalized for missing a gate in racing, in a competition for freestyle you get penalized for falling, messing up a rotation, etc. In racing everyone has their own style. Some are faster, some are slower. You guys rag on Goepper, but he can throw down. Its much like Bode when he was younger. People ragged on him, but he was SUPER fast.

Anyways, thats my stance.

I did make a generlization with coach that skis groomers thing but it was coming from my experince (which since i raced for one year is probably less then yours.) And with the comp skiing thing your right but i wasn't really refering to competitions and ti was just trying to give him ideas for his paper.

Oh I realized, I am just making the counter argument out of experience. I personally think it would be a better paper to compare and contrast ski racing and freestyle. Explain why each group loves skiing yet how they are for different people.

This. Pow should be priority over anything else when it comes to skiing, especially here on the east coast in my OP.

Ok so i have an A in english and i'm not sure what you are being graded on but i think it should consist of three words

Because it is.

a lot of the kids on my team were pretty sick on the park as well...way better than most of the usual park retards. We brought a few pairs to the hill one was usually some twins. And we usually rode pow on pow days unless training for an event. So many "park rats" are miserable skiers i love laughing at them because they think they are the coolest dudes on the mountain, when in reality there pretty shitty skiers.

my old freestyle coach used to say that sure and of the truly good park skiers can fly down a hill and turn around things, but no racer would even strait air a jumps that most these guys are throwing huge tricks on.

im in the south east we don't ever get powder but if a groomer misses a spot i hit it till its gone does that count cause its about all i can get

it's true that most racers will be better at skiing, they have the technique dialled in from a young age so will rip pow given the chance

a percentage of park skiers are people that have jumped straight in to park off their first intermediate ski lesson cause their friends do it

i went skiing at cardies and seeing some of the park rats venturing out into arcadia didn't look to be having a good time. don't get me wrong some park skiers can ski in pow and shred but it can be painfully obvious that you have never improved your technique, just improved spinning

good skier in park =/= good skier on the mountain

This is straight up bullshit. Just because most people love skiing pow doesn't mean everyone has to! You might love pow and not to understand how anyone could not like skiing it, that's fine. But not liking pow doesn't make someone any less of a skier. I do like skiing pow, i used to live for it and even skied a couple of freeride comps. I still love it when i get to ski it, but I'm more hyped to ride park/urban this winter.

Racing is really fun too by the way, sure its something different but no less a valid form of skiing. Anyone who thinks its easy should try and hit a super G course at full speed. You won't be able to get anywhere close to what these guys do. I assure you they are at least as much better than you at that than you are better than them in the park.

Do your homework yourself or tell your "friend" to do her homework "herself". Make life easy for yourself do the essay on something easily comprehend-able for your teacher like why is vegetables better for you than sugar. Or at least don't post stupid questions like these that raise the age old argument of race vs freestyle skiing.

personally i think it's a horrible concept ....

better would be to describe the differences, more precisely in a contest surrounding how at races it's more of a competitive vibe where everyone is competing against everyone as compared to a slopestyle contest where everyone is cheering and stoked for everyone ....

there's nothing wrong with racing its just a different type of skiing, if racers enjoy it let them do it and tell your friend to write about why freeskiing is so good rather than why racing is so bad.

but in every race i was in it was the same vibe. people on this site need to realize that skiers are skiers, no matter what discipline they do, theyre all there for the love of the mountain.

yeah it depends, i've been in very chill racing teams but also been to some contests where it's almost like a war between competitors ... especially the minor teams where mom and dad are there as well, it's sometimes downright rude ....

there's been a scandal here a few years ago when a mother of one of the kids turned down the bindings on her son's main competitor's skis and he crashed, leaving her son to take gold ....

and also in the adult races, the vibe in the teams is usually good but from what i've experienced, other teams/strangers are less chill ...

honestly, it seems like the smaller racing teams (adult and high school teams) that have the lower level of ability are all mega serious about it. i raced FIS/USSA for years and never had problems with other teams. however, my high school team acted like you were facing an opposing sports team, and i was questioned by my coach why i was talking to the enemy. i lol'd
