Freeskiing's Golden Age 2005-2008

Back before triples, at a time where doubles were just about nonexistant, and the sport was blooming. it was still much more of a niche, and was just such a chill vibe.

I feel like its lost a lot of this now :/

Anyone else agree with me on this? heres some pics and videos to illustrate:

I love how it can be narrowed down to exactly 2005-2008.

I would hate to play this card, but were you even a member in your "Golden Age".

i agree, i didnt do too much freestyle back then (first hit the park in 07-08) but i did watch edits before then. i loved all the 4bi9 ones from 06-07 and basically any edit was cool back then. the vibe just seemed much more chil then todays and everyone wasnt trying to be super styleey and shit.

i think the biggest downfall to today is everyone trying to be like b-dog, i dont even like b-dogs style at all.... i prefer tom wallisch, ahmet, wesson, and compton's styles a tonnn better. i honestly cant even watch b-dog....i just dont like it....IMO

realtime was my favorite movie for the longest time. One of the first movies I ever saw. Same with TBC.

Yeah agree, I liked the days better when you would hear about someone trying a new trick and you had to wait to see it in a ski movie at the end of the season, that made ski movies much better cause the anticipation was incredible.

it was a different time, thats for sure. I remember waiting for a month to get my dose of freeskiing info. Now, you can just log on to NS and not have to wait. I don't know if i like it. :/

Eh, skiing is what you make it. My golden age is whenever I'm on the hill with friends acting like jackasses and laughing our asses off.

With that said, Vanular's disasters in LSS blew my mind when they came out. It's so hard to believe that shit was almost 6 years ago. Shit.

i couldnt agree with you, until i saw the picture of shane mconcey. man that guy slayed, and i cant beleive what happened to him, he was my idol. RIP

golden age: 1998 - 2003

Moseley's 360 mute - Pep's 1242 segment

AK straightlining, fat skis, the birth of twin-tips, switch take-offs and landings, jibbing, grabbing your skis.

there it is for ya. the path was laid during those years.

golden age was way before whatever you said homie. don't remember skogens with trains on em? not the golden age then

The grass is always greener. Wait, that doesn't make sense because that would mean it was summer and such. I guess that means the snow is always deeper. Wait, but what if I'm skiing park. The snow is always whiter. Yeah, that one works.

Didnt read thread, but I seem to remember the disdain of the switch 1080 fest through the meat of those years. The double (and triple) bonanza is a bit tiresome, but it isn't like the "golden age" was all that golden. Some Hesiod the-past-is-so-much-better-than-the-present shit.

so what if it was cool then. it doesnt take away from what it is now.

maybe if it disappeared and you were reviewing a history of freesking you could select some era as the 'best', but doing so now seems useless, depressing, uninspiring, restricting, unnecessary, etc

Oh man I loved those years in the skiing culture. That was right when I got into park, everything was super exciting and new and fresh. Everyone seemed more friendly then too. Skiers wouldn't snake other skiers (unless they were racers), and you could just go up to and talk to any person with twintips in the park and take some laps together. The ski movies and edits were still really fun and seemed kinda underground, but more mature than back in the earlier years. Also, I was oblivious to the bullshit on NS at the time, so the site seemed like the best thing of all time.

Everyone's "golden age" is probably different though. We'll see the skiing scene as the most awesome whenever we got into it.

people are naturally nostalgic and resistant to change. in 5 years, people will think the same thing, and reminisce about clown school, the weak, and B&E

oops didn't mean to quote OP. also maybe the golden age was even a bit earlier, but I think most people can agree that it ended around the season after 1242 when skiing blew the fuck up and TBC came out

For me the Golden Age was 2002-2005. That was when I skied the most and had the most fun. That's all that matters.

It'd be fucking sick to have the x games big air OVER the halfpipe like they did there in Teddy Bear Crisis. Or at least have the final jump of the skier cross over the halfpipe. Snowpark Industries could make it happen.

i think skiing has become too superficial more about wearing the right gear and looking a certain way, as oposed to just chilling with your boys having fun...when i hit the mountain skiing is just about skiing, i try not to care about what the pros are up to and focus more on my own progression

i still agree with OP

I can see where a lot of the members are coming from in that the "golden age" was earlier, but im still fairly young so that probably affects my opinion

imo skiing is the best it's ever been right now. In 2015 we'll look back and probably say "oh man remember 2010 where it snowed a shitload, loved skiing back then" and the hipsters will say "oh skiing used to be so much better." it only gets better though. im having more fun skiing today than ever before

That's how I feel. I don't ski park though, so my progression is basically just learning about the backcountry, and being more and more pumped as our repertoire of sick zones just increases as we get hungrier to ski new shit and go deeper and deeper in the backcountry. There is no feeling better than stumbling upon a new pillow wall or something along those lines, in a zone where you always wondered what was around the bend. Skiing is just getting better for me and my homies each year.
