Freeskiing isn't marketable.

Danger.

I just thought I'd throw out my opinion on how magazines like Freeze will go under and how freeskiing will not become as large as we want (or don't want) because freeskiing is not marketable.

The reason I say this is because of our "image." The stereotypical skier wears XXXL pants and jackets and smokes a lot of weed. Now I don't care about how you feel, but the general public would probably feel that we are either: 1) Wiggers. or 2) Stoners. And having the number 1 skier/badass Tanner Hall smoke on public television in the X Games definitely does not help our reputation.

If we continue like this, we may never be able to shed our image and eventually help in the destruction of our own market. Having our poster children trying to be as ghetto as possible is not a good thing. It's one thing to wear huge pants and a huge jacket, and it's one thing to wear chains and "bling" and pretend you're a race that you aren't.

I know some of you are saying, "snowboarders are exactly like this too." They aren't. Do you see snowboarders smoking weed on TV and acting as stoned or black as possible? No. Hence their sport blowing up into a gigantic 90's phenomenon.

So watch how you act. And don't try and be something you aren't if you really care.

the streotypical skier wears starter jackets and jeans. you are dead wrong on all points.

My weiner is probably harder than yours.

1) change your icon

2) I completely disagree, freeskiing is getting bigger, no doubt. Complanies like Ninthward, 4frnt, Armada etc are all making awesome skis and teams. I dunno what you think, but not everyone that skis twins smokes weed and rolls on XXXL pants. Ex. My mountain has made huge upgrades in parks and a new superpipe... why would they spend that kind of money? They see it too!

3) If you don't care what we think, then why'd you post this?

4) Not all of the icons are ghetto bitches, Look at Gagnier, Dumont and Boyd. That's just a Tanner thing.

5) No, snowboarders are not like us, and that's a good thing. They smoke as much weed as some skiers do. Maybe t$ just needs to quit smoking, but he's not the poster child of our entire sport.

i dont see it self destructing itself, like that one kid said, look at the top 5 park snowboarders, i mean everyone on the hill smokes mad reef, even the older people, i mean this 40 year old dude on the lift today was talking about smoking a snap in the trees, pot is envolved with almost everything in that culture *ski/snowboard* i dont smoke much bud but im just saying thats just how it is.

one reason people like snowboarding more is because it's more like skateboarding and skateboarding exploded after the x-games. skiing is still getting bigger every year because you can tell each year. there are more skiers than the previous year.

No, i think he's right, in facted im going to go dust off my GS skis, put on a tight racing suit, and start training gates...

Freeskiing is a lifestyle, it's "Core" for a reason...If people can't handle handle it... fuck em, it's jest 1 less gorbie in the park, sounds great to me...

If u think the genereal public even realizes freeskiers even exist in alot of the world ur wrong. The general public beleives skiers are all preppy racing 2 plankers!!

kids that wear 'starter' jackets and pants aren't freeskiiers. those are the people that are there for the first time. and smoking weed on national tv isn't good for anything, but when was this? they didn't edit it out?

I regret some of the things I said after re-reading that. I went a little too far obviously, but there are at least a few things in our sport that don't give us a good image. That's pretty much all I was trying to say.

I say that most alternative sports have gone through the gangsta phase.

There's nothing wrong with it, and it will NEVER affect the marketing wonder of our sport.

You see the marketers just want to know where the youth are, and what they are doing. They don't care what it is, as long as youth are interested.

Sure a teeth-capped, bling wearing, XXXXXXL sporting, pot smoking White ass gangsta on a pair of skis might scare off nike or some other big one like that. However, the companies interested in youth culture don't care what the youth are doing. It's all weird to them as 40+ marketing executives.

They don't want to guide the trends, they want to follow them to make you buy their products.

So exercise your control, and don't be less gangsta.... be MORE GANGSTA!!!!

I hate emo.

I think XXXXL is the best thing thats happened to skiing. 99% of the world still thinks its a bunch of fags in tight neon suits racing when you say the word "skiing".

the ghetto wanna be fashion that many kids are trying to pull off is a freaking joke...

but thats their deal not mine...cant we all hold hands and do double daffys together and be friends??

I do have to say that the original poster does have a point...we focus so hard on skiing and forget the big picture, like WHY is snowboarding so much more marketable than skiing??

Being a skier in america is tough, the entire nation could care less...go to Europe and people there respect skiing athletes, its part of their culture. But in the good ol USA its all about Nascar and PBR, YEEHAW!!!

Snowboarding is bigger because their entire sport is not fragmented like ours. If you are a snowboard pro, you're the only way that snowboards get sold.

In skiing, we have racing, freestyle, Instructors, and New freestyle.

Our segment is tiny, as it is being compared to the whole of snowboarding.

Snowboarding is half of the snowsports industry. We would need racing, classic freestyle and ski instructors to all be stripped of anything they have, and their industries crushed to match snowboarding.

I hate emo.

your view point is wrong...

Snowboarding is more sucessful due to the "extreme" marketing campaigns forced down our throats...

Snowboard pro's get REAl sponsorships by real companies..like AMEX, FORD and CHEVY...

us poor skiers get lost in their marketability...

the skiing industry needs to promote itself across the board in all aspects in order to catch up...

you think racing is bringing us down, but actaully top racers get way more money through real sponsorships than all but a few top freeskiers...

we need to unite and brand ourselves appropraitely...division will do nothing but make snowboarding and other "extreme" sports more appealling to Madison Ave firms

Dear waynewong,

Are you the real Wayne Wong? Did you invent the Wongbanger? If so, it's good to see you taking an interest in the sport again, but you are a little behind the times. Bishop knows what he's talking about.

I don't wear xxxl, I don't smoke. Am I marketable? Look at the parks, they're not just making those for snowboarders. Look at all these ski events. That's marketability for you.

--------------------------------------
'Duran Duran bought Armada, Armada bought Microsoft, Microsoft bought MSP and AOL, AOL owns Time4 which owns the MountainSportsMedia which owns SKi, Skiing and RIP Freeze... so Armada now owns McDonalds and Coke.

waynefag: You have the wrong viewpoint.

Real Sponsers? I guess there are fake ones too? We have plenty of them, sorry they may not be huge, but like he kid above said, It keeps freeskiing smaller. One less new kid in the parks

us poor skiers get lost in their marketability... Um... no, Why do you think skiing is still around? If we're so lost, than we would have been done a while ago

the skiing industry needs to promote itself across the board in all aspects in order to catch up... WE DO!!! Read Mr.B's post! Racing, Powder skiing, Family skiing, Freestyle skiing, and skiing skiing.

you think racing is bringing us down... No shit, freeskiing isn't that big yet, and people ski for fun Did you miss the point here?

we need to unite and brand.... No agian. No one wants One ski company so we look the same... and no with the extreme shit too. That just mkaes it worse

just cause u listen to a type of music doesnt mean u think ur black, thats maybe what u owuld say i dunno 5 years ago, but it hsa completley changed

Ok you have lots to learn. Steroetypical skiers dont dress in baggy pants. Tanner does. And Tanner is not a freeskier. Tanner is a frestyle skier. A freeskier is someone hiking bowls and center punching the backcountry.

good point. down here in southern california with the mass snowboard population, people are like skiier... people still do that?

well, i can only muster the balls to wear XL, but im sure there are some who wear XXXXL.

and weed is often icky

pretty sick

I don't see why people rag on snowboarders anyways. I don't ride with any skiers, all my friends are snowboarders. I took most of my style and tricks from them, and they give me tons of respect for stomping the same shit they do on snowboards.

But anyways, skiing has been growing for the past couple years and it hasn't stopped. I don't forsee it stopping anytime soon.

i think somone should save this thread and throw it in this ignorant motherfuckers face 10 years from now...

freeskiing has really truelly only been around sinec about 1999.. am i right.. in 6 years the sport has grown ridiculously.. in sum places freeskiing is huge, u see more of us then snowboarders, its just a matter of time b4 it spreads

who cares

The average skier is actually pretty wealthy and is very marketable. Skiing is a fairly expensive sport, and it is seen by many people as a rich passtime. Granted, not all skiers are rich, but lots are. I for one can't understand why upper middle class white kids are so interested in pretending to be oppressed and dressing like they are from the inner city. It is kinda hard to convince me how ghetto you are when your parents shell out a few g's a year for equipment and passes.

i disagree, there are borders like that, that smoke pot and dress "gangster" with their "bling". its not everyone that dress/acts like that. but its true there are a few. in both sports there are people like that. skiing will get bigger, and " the media" will look past the " pot smoking gangsters with their bling"

- ryan

^ not saying anything bad about boarders, cause ive got no problem with them. just using it to compare, cause boarding has gotten huge even though of some guys with the way they dress.

its not really the clothes tho, its the attitudes, in all honestly i think the bigger clothes kinda make the tricks seems smoother, i mean theres nothing really that wrong with the attitudes either, someone made a great point about how long its been around and how fast it has exploded, and the whole pot issue, has always been around, even before snowboards and twin tips. people have been smokin pot on the mountains for a long time, doesnt make it right, im just saying its around.

Memphis Bleek

^ i agree, its not clothes and pot. cause thats been around with snowboarding and no one cares. it the attitudes of the people riding, and how it is advertissed will depend on how fast it grows.

- ryan

Before.

As skiers ,we buy some of the most expensive gear in sports. Do you see the average soccer player buying 400 dollar cleats, with 200 dollar shoelaces, and a 100 dollar ball? NO. Skiing is an expensive sport. We are a highly marketable people.
