so i just got up to biggie right now, i turn on my laptop that has wireless internet, and i pick up that there is a wireless network in my area. So some dumbass set up a wireless router somewhere on the mountain and he didnt enable securty or WEP so im using free wireless highspeed internet, dope

That happened to me as well. I have my own network, but in one corner of my house I picked up my neighbor's connection. It was worthless because I already had one, but it was still cool.

the guy downstairs in my dorm has a wireless router and everyone uses it, so it can get super slow. im gonna get a router though and throw a WEP pass on it so i can actually use the speed my school gives me, and still move from my desk

Anyone ever been wardriving? It's basically driving around searching for wireless hotspots and then connecting to them. A few guys mapped out every point in San Francisco and posted it on the web, I would think by now other cities have been mapped out too.

you think thats cool? my dads friend has a porgram on his laptop that enables him to see all locations of wireless networks and if they are blocked or not and cannont be traced, its the shit

Depending on your location, if you access the internet(or do anything with malicious intent)using wireless that doesn't belong to you, it's illegal. but if you're just connected to their network, then you're fine legally (except in certain states), you just can't use that persons internet connection because they pay for it (ie theft). I would be careful though, some people leave their wireless open on purpose, especially if they're in high traffic areas. this could let someone use the loop hole: you're on my LAN, i do whatever I please to your machine. and they proceed to collect your information or just generally fuck you up with out you knowing about it (and judging by the way you talk, you would not know about it).

^well son i do know what im doing, i disabled sharing on my pc and put up a firewall to block any incoming access attempts from any ip except the internet connection. i checked and there are no shared resources so its obvious its just some rich guy in one of the luxury condos across the road who set up wireless internet for himself and didnt set up WEP.

There are so many wireless networks around my neighborhood. At my friends apt, his internet went down, and he just plugged in USB wireless card and had 6 networks to choose from. We went warwalking one night over a few blocks and found 30+ networks. Only about 10 open ones though.
