Fraternity Life

Anyone on NS in or interested in a frat? Outside of the typical opinions on fraternity guy, anyone have any cool stories or serious comments about it?

I would love to pledge a frat but the one's where i go to school are just in it for the title they really don't put any effort into actually picking dedicated brothers or doing things. They just think they're awesome cause they have letters on their chests

Not that I have a hard time making friends, but it's a great way to meet a lot of people imo + sorority girls

I hate just answering with a wise-ass remark.

The frats at my school were pretty shitty. The houses were garbage and the people in them were as well. However that is just one school (UBuff), i'm sure not everyone else's experiences with frats is the same as mine.

I see where you are coming from, I go to URI & Greek Life is most of the party scene here, at a party school

It can be. You can make friends with people in frats/sororities and be invited to all the parties as well

agreed and that is another option, sometimes more practical. But socials are pretty cool, you get together with a sorority at a themed party where no one else is allowed.

Personally not my thing but I have a plenty of friends who did or are in frats and like it. I've parties at plenty of frats had some insane shit happen but I just like doing my own thing.

Definitely good for some people but I'd rather just kick it with everyone and do whatever I want.

I think the whole pledging thing is pretty dumb but whatever.

Agreed about the pledging, a lot of frats have now gotten rid of there pledge process. And I have a lot of friends in frats that pick and choose when they get involved so they do a lot of just hanging and out doing there own thing, which i think makes it a cool balance if your into it.

Right now I'm just rushing soooooo, free beer for a month, it's fun

Don't join a frat man. Instead start a badass ski club then the girls will come to YOU.

I was really closed minded about greek life prior to college, going along with all the cliche sayings about frat guy. But I met some guys over the summer in a frat at my school that I really like, it opened my mind to it and now I'm rushing and actually really like it.

It all depends on the Frat, there are your typical jerk off ones, but it isn't all of them. Anyone who says otherwise is being some what ignorant imo

This is probably gonna sound like a retarded question, but what's the big deal about frats and sororities? All I've ever heard about them is the parties which is cool and all. But besides that, what's the point?

Sense of community and being a family. They are also supposed to do community service and maintain a solid GPA

yeah a lot of parties, but there is actually a lot of networking that goes along with fraternities. You meet a lot of people, and depending on the frat there can be a lot of successful alumni that helps out in terms of internships and job opportunities.

And not to sound gay, but your suppose to develop friends with brother like qualities/ getting really involved on campus. Some frats require good grades which can be a motivator.

It's for sure not for everyone but it has its benefits, I think it gets a bad rep from people who don't know what it's really about

Ahhh okay haha I knew there was a better reason than just parties. Seems pretty cool if that's what you're into

UB? If so I also go here and agree

I'm in Pi Beta Phi at Montana State University. Our Greek system is small, but I love it. Today I volunteered with my house at the library. We met with local kindergartens and helped them read! (Our philanthropy is literacy.) I joined simply to help in the community and gained sisters. Greek life isn't for everyone, but I'm glad I have a family away from my biological one.

Want to be a douchebag? There is no easier way than to join a frat. If you're not already 100% douche, hanging out with your frat brothers will complete your transformation. You may become so completely enveloped in doucheness that you may not even realize you're a turbo-douche. Frats = douches. Plain and simple. Go ahead, buy your friends, degrade women, get bad grades because you're "committed to your frat," do all kinda of stupid shit that future employers may be able to find out about, the list goes on. Frats = douches.

My school had lots of really good frats and I have a ton of friends that were in them! But you don't need frats to get friends and your kinda stuck with those guys everywhere you go all the time. I don't like frats.

The only comment I have on fraternity life is that if you are curious or think you might be interested, go hang out at as many different houses on campus as you can. If your school is anything like mine, you'll make good friends whether you decide to join one of them or not.

holy generalization

NS is a decently terrible place to talk about frats. All frats around skiing college's are absolutely awful.

If you're serious about greek life and want to join a great house, don't use frat, its considered disrepectful.

That being said, I'm a brother of Phi Kappa Tau at a great school with smaller greek life. It's not very fratty, and part of the reason I joined was because I've always been part of a brotherhood throughout my life. Be it sports, clubs or scouting.

With that aside. Greek life is different school to school. rush the houses you like, and see yourself fitting into rather than who might be the "top tier" house at a school. It's a great way to network, build social and proffessional skills and gain an edge over non greeks. At some schools greek life will suck and at others its a fantastic way to meet people and make friends.

Also, fuck the haters. you geeds can go suck one.

You should do it man. I'm totally going to join a frat when I get to college. Right now I'm in one of my high school's frats and it's super chill.

Much love to Phi Tau.

Seriously this, as a PNM you learn so much about your school's system and if you're a fit for it or not. Ask if you can get house tours and hang out. It's all about preference.

I didn't go into college as a friendless virgin, so no.

You obviously don't know OP you dingus.

Anyways, if you can get aside from the stereotypical frat guy ego, frats are pretty cool. The sense of brotherhood kinda remind me of my high school. Just don't like how you have to be "in" with a fraternity to actually go to a fraternity party. I showed up at Chi Phi at URI with 6 girls (me and my friend +6 girls) and they wouldn't let me and my friend in just cause we weren't part of the frat. I would understand if just two random dudes showed up but we brought girls and our own alcohol. But it's cool, apparently Chi Phi and Fiji use roofies on the girls at their parties so i think im good.

Overall, if you are trying to meet new friends a frat is fucking awesome for it. Just don't be a stereotypical frat douche. Do it for the greek life, not the title.

It doesn't matter if you bring girls or booze, a frat party with a sorority is that. If you were apart of that you wouldn't want randos showing up. Plus it would depend on how attractive the girls are or if you know anyone there. And Chi Phi has never been involved with roofies. A Fiji frat in a different state did in the 70s so thats where that came from. Nothing to do with this chapter.

Moral is, I wouldn't knock it because you haven't been to one rush event. Coming on the other side of things I think you would have a better understanding and see the interest.

Plus depends on the frat don't generalize. URI is all greek life for parties, kids will be scrounging for things to do/ parties later in the year that are LAME. URI has 15 of the hottest sorority girls in the country

Never been turned down from a party. You just gotta do. Also lol at "the title".

I don't think frats are that cool anyway but you don't have to be that cool to get into all of them. People need to work on their social skills. Then again maybe that ditches the purpose of joining a frat.

I'm not knocking greek life or the brotherhood of a fraternity. I'm knocking the fact that all experiences I've had with frats have been negative. I'm sure if I wanted to join a frat and gave it a chance I would love the experience and the brotherhood considering my entire high school experience was based upon brotherhood.

Sorry for dub but I would go to a frat even if I was invited. I'm not saying all frat guys are dick heads. I'm just saying the title gets to peoples heads. I even told Austin I was thinking about looking at the frats once spring rush comes around. Right now though, I have way too much work to worry about it.

if you think you will like a frat, go for it!

a lot of my friends are in frats or have been and they all liked it big time + it will really help you in your further working life, seriously it could be my friends but everybody i know who has been in a frat got a job instantly after college and if you ever want something to get fixed somebody in your frat would know the right guy for that.

but offcourse you can also not join it and just become friends with frat people, but that way you wouldnt meet everyone.

Not sure how it is there, but we don't let random dudes into our parties for risk management purposes. It helps keep the numbers down and limits the party to mostly people we know. Both guys and girls.

That last sentence, is right on the money.

As to the roofies thing, I can't tell you how many roofie rumors I hear a semseter about who is roofing who. Lax team, hockey team, this frat that frat those guys etc...It's a rumor that spreads faster than herpes lol

exactly, & then you lower the risk of the cops coming to bust the party by keeping it limited to the social
