French deputies pass face veil ban

France's lower house of parliament has voted to ban the wearing of face-covering veils in public places by 336 votes to one.The bill, which has received overwhelmingly support in opinion polls, must now be ratified by the senate in September to become law.The opposition Socialists boycotted the vote and France's highest administrative body warned in March that it could be found unconstitutional and therefore thrown out."The Council of the State warned the government that the French law and the EU law could find this bill unconstitutional, as it violates human rights and religious freedom," Al Jazeera's Estelle Youssouffa, reporting from the National Assembly in Paris, said.'Bare face'The bill makes it illegal to cover the face anywhere in public and those caught wearing a full veil would face fines of $190 or be ordered to enrol in a "citizenship course".

Men who force their wives or daughters to wear the full veil face a fine of up to $37,754 and a one-year jail term, according to the draft legislation.Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, said earlier this year that the full veil, such as the niqab or the burqa, "hurts the dignity of women and is not acceptable in French society".

Life in France is "carried out with a bare face", Michele Alliot-Marie, the justice minister, said last week as she opened the debate in the National Assembly.

Face-covering veils "call into question the idea of integration, which is founded on the acceptance of the values of our society", Alliot-Marie said. The main body representing French Muslims says face-covering veils are not required by Islam and not suitable in France, but it worries that the law will stigmatise Muslims in general.

The veil is widely seen in France as a sign of extremism and an attack on women's rights and secularism, a central value of modern-day France.

Critics say the ban is a ploy to attract far-right voters.Youssouffa said the French Muslims community is uncomfortable with the bill and feels it stigmatising the whole community."French Muslims say less than only 2,000 women use the veil and are seen as ultra-orthodox minority and do not represent the whole community," she said. After the socialists promised to abstain, it was always going to get an easy ride through the lower house.

But hopefully the Upper House will give it a harder time.

And then there's European Court of Human Rights proceedings, in which there's a good chance it will be declared illegal, and be thrown out.

I doubt it. French Muslims tend to be quite secular anyway, which is why out of 5,000,000 French Muslims, only 2000 wear the Burkha.

And it's not like it's victimization of just one religion: Christians aren't allowed to wear crosses, etc

I really don't know where I stand on this issue.

On one hand, being covered head to toe all the time is one of the dumbest rules of any religion. The message it sends is that only a womans husband is allowed see her, and no one else. She's basically his property. That's wack.

On the other hand, is it the governments place to be policing peoples religion? This could go very wrong for France if they're not careful.

ehhh you know what. if i have to wear a burka or whatever when i go to islamic countries and whatever, then they can comply with the rules of my country or any other.

thats what im sayin, i think this is kind of a step in the right direction by the government. im not too sure about this law in particular cus in my opinion ppl should be able to wear whatever the fuck they want, but im talking about all the other shit they pull off; like we're not allowed decorations in the airport during christmas because of all the other religions who are trippin out, and people being all like oh well i should be allowed to bring a knife to school because im sikh, well fuck you guys, you're gonna come live in this country, thats fine, but if you dont like the way things are you can pack your shit and get the fuck back to where you're from. /rant

You do see muslim women (i presume), driving with the full face veil in England, and i do think, in this instance that you shouldn't be allowed to drive with it on.

Common sense should pre-VEIL hahaha

sarko sucks. ignorant fuck. france sucks too so whatever I'm not surprised they have a history of discrimination towards their citizens who are not naturalized and do not fit the french "norm."

this.

i like the fact that i THINK it was enacted to prevent husbands from forcing their wives to wear them.

however if a woman is CHOOSING to, what place does the French govt have to tell them not to.

Good. Minorities that blatantly will NOT try to assimilate with their new countries should be forced to take classes and grow the fuck up.

i hate to say it, but i aggree with you on this one.

its bullshit that when people come into western countries they expect to keep up a third world behavior that is unacceptable where theyve ended up.

if you wanna rock a burkha get the hell back to the desert where you belong!

i agree with the ban

if you move to a new country, you adapt to that country. You don't just bring along every social/traditional norm from your homeland, and continue living as if you never left. And if that's the case, then you might as well not leave at all.

From what I read about this in my Anthropology book is that it is essentially a banning of all religious icons in schools and such (from the veil to crucifixes or the skullcap that Jewish men wear).

I agree though, the out right banning is kinda strange but at the same time there were girls that DIDN'T want to wear them but their parents were forcing them to wear them.

The concept of Laïcité is taken very seriously in France. It is equivalent to the First Ammendment, but more rigorously enforced.

But I essentially agree with you. No one should be forced to wear it, but everyone should have the right to wear it, if they want to of their own volition.

I want to start off with a "you're an idiot" but I won't. I believe in embracing the traditions of the place you move to, that being said this bill is insane. It's like saying jewish people can no longer wear yamakas in the us or something. I'm in no way religious, but I believe in religious freedom and personal freedom at that.

This is just another of the many new laws being passed that show our world going down the shitter. Personal rights and freedoms are out the window. Fuck anyone who voted for this bill.

The Bill if I am not mistaken started due to there being problems at school with people getting either made fun of for the religious symbols or kids being forced into wearing them when they didn't want to.

I'm in no way of people being forced to do anything against their will. If you don't want to wear one you shouldn't have to, but that should be a separate issue. The idea of fining people for wearing them even if it's their own choice of religious expression is just insane.

I just don't like governments anywhere telling people what they can and can't do on issues that they really have no business messing with. government power has gotten way way too big for my liking

While I agree they did do one thing well. They banned ALL religious symbols from being worn in public. They didn't pick and choose.

that's still messed up to me. People should be able to wear what they want. If anything they should ban people from wearing tails and calling themselves wolves.

at least if wolves robbed a bank you'd know who did it because you can see their face.

frankly, masks make me freaking uncomfortable. i hate mascots and clowns...ugh and walking by a woman in a burka is just as bizarre but really awkward as hell.

I don't have a problem with the Burka. The problem I have is all the Muslim women that wear them in my town are SO DAMN QUIET that in grocery aisles I will turn around and like run into them and shit cause I didn't know they were there. Or I turn around and they are looking at me without asking me to get out of their way and I have a fucking heart attack.
