Fractured Fibula.

Hey NS,

I fractured my fibula on 12/11 . More specifically my lateral malleolus. It was a minor stress fracture caused by tendons pulling on the bone. I am healing well. Staying off and in boot as much as possible as well as starting PT on 12/28. Does anyone have any insite on when I can ski again ? I am feeling confident I will be able to lightly ski on 2/1... Thnks for input.

How close is it to the top of your boot? I've heard if it's within 2 inches above or below you're at a pretty big risk of rebreaking it just with normal skiing

Its right at the bottom of the fibula .. the outside of my ankle

I broke my tib/fib requiring surgery while playing hockey and was back skating in about 10 weeks if that helps. Feb 1st doesn't seem crazy to me, stay off it is my suggestion.

OP was Feb 1st a number you came up with or a date you were given by a doc? When it comes to injuries it's 100% worth it to sacrifice some time in the short run to get back to where you were in the long run.

Thanks for your reply. I totally agree and wouldnt try anything against dr orders. The original recommendation was 6-8 weeks from original injury . That will be right around then.

shattered tib and got a spiral fracture on my fib on mothers day, as long as you listen to the doctor, you should be mostly ok in 10-12 weeks, take it easy till next year tho... heal well brother

I skied with a broken and sprained ankle at copper line 4 years ago, if you have a proper fitting boot and you crank it down you can get away with it. but you've got a lot of muscles that attach at that point and if you fall you'll make it worse so here is what I'll say:

You shouldn't ski on it until you're cleared, but I would probably already be skiing on it.

Do as I say not as I do.

Katrina,

Wow i cannot believe you skied on it. anytime i turn my foot it pulls on the tendon/ ligaments which then pulls apart fracture. I do not think I could ski on it. Glad your injury didnt stop you from skiing !!!

Nah dude ended up needing surgery. It was stupid lol.

I had a really similar break, took me 16 weeks to start being able to do things again, and still, occasionally swells, gets stiff and causes pain. Follow your PT's recommendation.

mine was completely snapped at the distal fib and they put it back together with hardware. I think they said the bone was healed up at like 3 months but at that point it was not really ski season and I think I would not have been strong enough to have a good time anyways. I got my boot off around Labor Day and waited until late November to ski and it was painful for a while

hey safarisam,

Thanks for sharing your injury experience. was yours a lateral malleolus fracture? Mine is and is very minor. 16 weeks sounds super long. I was 100% weight bearing without cruches 10 days after break . ive only heard 6-8 weeks as the timeline

Have a great ski season !!!!

FYI you should not be able to turn your foot at all once you're in your boot, if you can you should get a new boot fit. I ski a completely different boot post surgery for that reason.

Hello OregonDead,

Thanks for sharing your fibula recovery story. Im sure if I had any more force I would probably have similar break as you..... luckily small fracture. Caught top right corner of ski trying to ski across a rock wall and super man fell foward . possibly something similar happened to you. luckily no surgery. Glad to hear you are okay now tho . Shred hard brother

I ride the QST boot. Its comfortable light, and tight. what boot do you ride. I dont think i can turn my foot at all but i am going to try with my good foot and boot .

also ive never purchased or ridden piviots but im really thinking they could have possibly saved my ankle

Ah that's what I ski now I really like it. I am surprised you were able to roll your ankle over in there, maybe need to size down or get one of those heel wraps for the back of the liner to help hold ya in there better.

Oh, I was non-weight bearing for 8 weeks and extremely limited for another 4 weeks. Make sure your boots fit well-- I wear a different one now to accommodate for the pressure surrounding my breakline.
