for you bush haters...

how come we are so centered on Iraq?

I understand that there is a war there but it seems that it always is the only thing that we judge president Bush on. I don't agree with almost anything Bush has done, but i think that Iraq has been one of his smallest mistakes, compared to the environment and other issues

this goes out to Graves, who seems to think porrly of the russians for having a spy/intelligence program. well, youre a fucking hypocrite, cause you know damn well that the FBI and CIA are the same thing

To understand mankind, we must first understand the word. We can break the word down into two sub-words, 'mank' and 'ind'.What these two words mean is a mystery, just like mankind itself.

well its not just the war. the drilling in alaska for example. sure its good to get less dependant on forgen oil but this dont you think its more important to use money to develope alternate energy sources? i mean whats a futire without skiing or boarding and who likes sunscreen? and whith theese tax cuts that we are getting all the time and the ever growing deficit you know who is going to pay that debt out? you and me. and im sure no one like s paying taxes

^^ its not that the russians have spy programms. putin is re-centralizing his government and starting to employ policies that are going to make it really hard for any opposition parities to gain seats in local and provinvial governments.

essentially becoming more athoratarian. thats what graves is talking about.

Not to say Putin is correct...

But mind you, centralizing government is not always a bad thing. Especially when you're faced with a multitude of crisises and pitfalls. The centralization of government can be one's most powerful tool in the reparation of one's country.

Look at Hamilton and post-Amer. Revolution policy.

Yes its all Bush's fault that the environment is going down the toilet.

Nevermind the fact that we have been an industrialized nation for over 100 years, or that we have been driving gas powered vehicles for the last century. It is all Bush's fault! No one else but him! Blame Bush!

I heard during his free-time he runs around the lawn of the White House with aerosol cans spraying them upwards while laughing evily and chanting 'Die environment, die!' To make it even worse he makes the entire White House staff and Secret Service do the same. All in hopes of expanding the hole in the ozone layer.

Yes, Bush is ruining the environment, nevermind all the gas that we burn. Forget the billions of pounds of garbage we produce each year. None of that effects the environment at all. It's just Bush's fault. Just like it is his fault there is no cure for aids yet. Just as it is his fault that cars can't fly, and just as it his fault that there are no mountains with hundreds of inches of snow on an annual basis in the Southwestern Michigan area. Damn you Boooooooosh! Damn you!

i wont completly argue with you on that one, there are many policies and decsions regarding the enviroment that i think werent wise, but by no means did he single handly ruin the enviroment all of humanity has a hand in that, but there hasnt been to many steps taken to do something about the current pronblem which is becoming a big one

what exactly has bush done to destroy the environment? I really do want to know for reals. Be specific.

'WASHINGTON- After seven years in critical condition, the Kyoto global warming treaty has a new lease on life, thanks to its recent ratification by Russia. Supporters and skeptics alike agree that the treaty will not solve the climate problem. Its environmental limits are meager, expire in 2012 and do not apply to developing nations, where global warming emissions are growing most rapidly.'

Maybe that is why the US didnt pursue the Kyoto Treaty. It didnt have any teeth. I dont think that anyone wants to further global warming, its more of a situation on how to best use time and resources.

Thank you for posting that Utah. I was trying to find a similar article that I posted at another forum but could not find it.

Even highly active environmentalists have criticized the treaty.

Basically the UN and those that signed it painted a pretty picture of the Kyoto treaty even though it was quite apparent from the beginning that it would not do crap. I believe most world leaders just signed it to get the whack jobs off their backs.

Besides, signing a treaty does not make the environment better, innovation does.

You want specifics of how bush is hurting the environment? You can say the Kyoto agreement but the truth is like it was said that agreement wasnt that great to begin wiht. Bush is dismantling the work done by president Clinton. Bush is letting snowmobiles into Yellowstone, drilling for gas and disrupting the Arctic national wildlife refuge, is opening certain areas of national forest to logging, and many other things i cant think of right now. But, its also what bush isnt doing. Bush isn't looking to develop any new types of fuel efficient cars, and Bush really isn't looking at any alternative, more green types of energy. Why? Because his family made their fortune in oil. How can you expect him to be environmentally friendly when he is rich because of oil? Bush is one of the worst environmentalists of all presidents. I hate bush on this aspect, but i really dont think hes done too much wrong wiht the war in Iraq.

Clintons work? Are you serious? Clinton was a retard who did all the things that would make him look great for the environmentalists but in all reality, most of what he did was meaningless. Case in point: Grand Staircase/escalante national park. At the end of his term he set aside thousands of acres of land in southern utah for what would be an incredible park for all of our childrens children to enjoy. That is great, but the reality of the situation was that most of the land that he 'protected' from any form of development was ugly as sin and its only real worth was to the residents that live there. There are quite a bit of natural resources that helped support the livelyhood of the people that lived there that were all of a sudden cut off. The area is now nearly a ghost town because the people were forced to other areas. How is that right? President Clinton didnt have to account for anyone for declaring that land a national preserve and did it so that the environmental left would be appeased with him and his party and the people that it actually affected were squashed and never had their voices heard. That is wrong.

^^^^

Since when was Bush drilling ANWR? That's news to me and I am sure it is news to Bush himself.

And if Bush is restricting progression for vehicles then why have we had more and more hybrids come out? Why is BP opening the first Hydrogen station for hydrogen powered vehicles? Why is GM putting millions and millions into developing fuel cells for vehicles? Yes, it certainly seems like he is limiting our abilities to progress.

Also, I am no advocate of logging, but if logging is done properly it can cause very little harm. What many logging companies are doing now is selective logging in overgrown areas. This actually lessens the chance of forest fires spreading rapidly. It also leaves the presence of a forest and the opportunity for new trees to grow. Yes, its not the bst way to go about things but until we stop using paper and living in homes, logging is something that will, unfortunately, continue.

On July 12th, 2004, the Bush administration announced a proposal to repeal the Roadless Area Conservation Rule.

The roadless rule is a balanced policy that protects nearly 60 million acres of our nation’s last wild forests. The rule was crafted following years of scientific evidence, hundreds of public meetings across the country, and 1.6 million public comments. To date the Forest Service has received more than 2.5 million comments on the rule — 95% in favor.

The Bush administration has allowed the logging of the Tongass wilderness area, a rainforest. I think it's pretty easy to find many instances of the administration's neglect of the environment. But no, graves, bush probably isnt prancing around in a diaper on the whitehouse lawn with an aerosol can putting CFC's into the air. No, he's probably signing a bill to further the destruction of the environment.

Oh yeah, Graves, if you are a skier you have to respect the environment somewhat. I mean come on we use the wilderness as our plaground, have some respect.

'Has you ever had an abortion? Surely you should try something before you say it is bad. Because I was very anti-Burger King, but then I went there and I had the flame grilled, ain't it, and you know it was like amazing.'-Ali G

Yes, th wilderness is part of the playground. And it's our lift ticket dollars that encourage the logging of national forests to provide our playgrounds. Its our desire to travel deep into the wilderness that leads to the development of more roads. Our skis are made of logged trees. The resorts we funnel money into every year are constantly expanding and building.

Then to top it off you get these 'environmentalist' morons (ie the ones in Vail a few years ago) who decide it would be a sweet idea to burn down a massive multi million dollar building (made of trees), all without consideration that the building would be insured and all Vail would do is take the insurance claim and chop down more trees and build another building.

Five less developed nations tackle Bush on Kyoto

By Fiona Harvey and Caroline Daniel in Gleneagles

Published: July 8 2005 03:00 | Last updated: July 8 2005 03:00

The developing nations attending the summit of the Group of Eight leading economies sent a strong rebuff to the US on climate change yesterday.

They strongly endorsed the Kyoto protocol on climate change, which the US has rejected, and called on developed nations to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases, in a joint statement ahead of the G8's expected communiqué on climate change.

China, India, Brazil, Mexico and South Africa noted that climate change had and would have "a profound impact on the development prospects of our societies".

Referring to the Kyoto protocol, which requires developed countries to cut their greenhouse gas emissions, they said: "Developed countries should therefore take the lead in international action to combat climate change by fully implementing their obligations of reducing emissions."

This was clear criticism of the US, which has strongly opposed the inclusion of any mandatory emissions reduction targets in the text of the G8 communiqué.

Friends of the Earth, the environmental non-governmental organisation, welcomed the five nations' statement as "extremely positive".

A spokeswoman said: "This holds confidence in Kyoto. They are clearly asking [G8 countries] for cuts in emissions and for defined targets and the G8 countries can't afford not to listen."

However, the five developing countries did not pledge to reduce their own emissions, invoking the terms of the Kyoto treaty that said developed nations were in a stronger position to make emissions cuts.

Instead, they called for more money to help them adopt sustainable energy technologies, such as solar and wind power, that would reduce their reliance on fossil fuels, and money to help them adapt to the effects of climate change, such as drought and flood, which they said were borne mainly by the poor.

The call echoed a hint by Gordon Brown, the chancellor of the exchequer, that the World Bank would provide more financing for clean energy projects in the developing world, in addition to the assist-ance in setting up such projects it already provides under the Kyoto protocol.

Their appeal for technology also reflects the position of President George W. Bush.

The president has emphasised the need to seek new technology to lower emissions in the future in preference to taking any steps to cut emissions now.

Earlier in the morning Mr Bush appeared to strike a conciliatory note, holding out hope that the US might agree to a statement endorsing the scientific basis for climate change, as other G8 leaders want. Referring to a speech on climate change he made in 2001, Mr Bush said: "If you look at the speech, I recognised that greenhouse gases were an issue and that we must deal with it.

"I said that based upon scientific evidence, the goal of the United States is to neutralise and then reduce emissions of greenhouse gases over time.

"And so my position has been pretty steady."

However, though Mr Bush's 2001 speech conceded that the earth was warming, it emphasised the uncertainty in scientific research, particularly on what constituted a dangerous level of warming.

The speech made clear a preference for developing new technology to deal with climate change rather than adopting targets for emissions reduction.

An interesting thing abt this thread is that when you think about 'alternative sports' across the board, skiing has the most politically right-leaning participants, yeah? The link is obvious - skiing is still rooted in old money, zero to nil cultural diversity, despite all newskoolers' attempts at alignment w more 'street level' culture and sport eg. skateboarding or hip-hop (whom we may love but honestly they'd be embarassed to be endorsed by us, face it) - but it's still pretty depressing.

Nothing remotely original I can add to the thread but to the poster brushing off Bush's public speaking skillessness: mastery as an orator is possibly the most important gift a major leader should, no, must possess - rationalising Bush's gaffes (surely worse than idiot Quayle's) is seriously a crime on the part of the right, it's pretty much giving carte blanche to fucking illiteracy so long as the party line is upheld. Hideous.

I think taking action in the direction of reducing emissions is better than taking no action at all. What are we waiting for, the perfect treaty to fall on our laps, the one with enough "teeth?" You mean the one that will severly limit businesses' ability to expend fuel at the necessary rate to grow? That's the kind of treaty the corporate supported conservative government of America wants, right? A treaty that will LIMIT them MORE?

51-49 Senate Vote Backs Arctic Oil Drilling

Longtime Bush Goal for Alaskan Wildlife Refuge Closer to Reality

By Justin Blum

Washington Post Staff Writer

Thursday, March 17, 2005; Page A01

A closely divided Senate yesterday voted in favor of opening Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling, bringing a long-sought goal of the Bush administration within striking distance of being realized.

The action marks the first time the Senate has signaled its support for drilling in the ecologically sensitive area since President Bush took office. And while hurdles remain, drilling advocates said they are close to achieving their decades-long drive to tap billions of barrels of oil beneath the 1.5 million-acre coastal plain.

Here is the rest of the story:
