Boys. I’m 37 and I really want to land a backflip before I hang it up. I’m a pretty solid skier, nothing special. I have done backflips on diving boards for many years. I’m comfortable on my skis, can do 360s and 540s, but haven’t really done them On larger jumps.

Am I crazy to send it? I’m 6’1” 160 something pounds. I need some stoke to hype me up. Suggestions of how to try it? Build a jump?

Air bags

37, was doing good until a few years ago and now I limp everywhere thanks to hip arthritis. Rarely ski anymore unfortunately, kids definitely slowed that down but im looking forward to teaching my boys how to side jump all your rail lips in the next few years.

36, with 4 kids who follow me through the park! I still land cork 7's and backflips most of the time, 9's on occasion-- but shifty 180s never get old.

29, so not old, but I just started skiing again after 8 years, teaching my daughter to ski. I only ever did 3s and 5s back in the day, but I am wanting to start hitting the big jumps again and working on my rail skills.

I got into a serious mountain bike crash 2019, broke my cheekbone, concussion, etc so just getting back to normal has been a process

33 now, been waiting ~15yrs for the right spring conditions to finally try a cork... maybe that makes me a big ol puss, but it’s funny cause it’s actually true.

this might be the year for both of us man, i can feel it in my bones... or maybe that’s arthritis, whatever.

may the odds be ever in your favor ?

thanks, man. getting corked for the first time at 33 is awesome. hell yes.

get comfortable doing them on a trampoline first. then get comfortable doing them on a diving board.

then realize that there's a decent chance you're going to slam on your first attempt on snow (either over- or under-rotating.) but after that, you should be golden.

that's how it was for me. i haven't landed a backflip on snow since 2004, but that was my progression from 2000-2004, and i could land a backflip a decent amount of the time back then.

Building a jump will build confidence, but honestly if you can flip off a backyard diving board you could toss it off a 20 ft jump no problem, you might even over rotate it. If you are nervous, hit the jump you would feel most comfortable doing it on and just think about what it would be like to set your flip, even just do a bit of a practice set without actually throwing it and think about the air time you have to get it around. You can be scared but as long as your brain is 100% committed you'll likely get to your feet. Like others say it's easier than a 3 once you get past the mental part of it. You got it.

Thanks a lot for the reply. Yeah, even this summer in my parents back yard, I was doing backflips off of a non-spring diving board. I think I need to get the first send out of the way and go from there.

I want to find a poppy wind lip and just let er rip.

I can only do backflips into pools and on skis if that helps you, doing it on a trampoline scares the fuck out of me.

A wind lip would be an awesome set up. Don't worry about not landing it, over rotating a backie even in the park/ hard conditions really isn't a bad crash (I'm only in my late 20's though so it's hard to say what that will feel like in 9 years) and if you are in full send mode under rotating will be near impossible. If you don't land it first go, you'll land it on the second attempt. It will feel amazing and at the same time you will be thinking "wtf, too easy, why didn't I do that sooner". pro tip: don't feel like you have to lean back on the lip, you can have all the forward pressure in the world as long as you toss it like you do off a diving board it will come around.

I'm 35. I have two young kids so I don't get to ride as much as I would like, but when I do get to the hill I get back into 1's, 3's, 5's and 7's. I usually like to spin up to cork 7 which was always one of my favourite tricks to do. Going from skiing 50+ days a year to maybe 5 days if I am lucky makes for not as much progression, but me and the crew still try to push each other on jumps, rails, natural features etc.

Holy shit dude! Your still here!

I miss your single frame NS drawings from back in the day. Please O please make some more.

On a tangeant, Im really digging the « old skier » shots and vids users have been posting here. Id like to see more 30+ yo riders still sending it. There is a certain wholesome feeling to it

Thanks man! Not too many people from that time are still around. I don't know how people age out of NS, I still check it every day. [tag=195966]@cydwhit[/tag] has got the drawings locked down these days, and he's killin it

31 here and landed my first 7 and cork 3 last year. Also blew my knee in the spring.

Going for unnat cork 3, cork 7 and sw cork 5 this year if I can get the laps in this spring.

Nope I live 10-12 minutes away from snow trails and according to the old lady that’s the farthest away I’m aloud to be ?

Best comment on the thread so far. haha.

I'm 34, managed a quick backie for old time's sake last season. Last time I tried a spin at 29, I ended up tearing my knee for the 4th time. (3x ACLs now and 2x meniscus spread across both knees). Figure that just keeping it to backflips from now on is the way to go so that there isn't any twisting impacts happening anymore.

and zero spins.

This thread is mad inspirational, I'm turning 26 this year so no more good health insurance. I think I've always skied somewhat conservatively and listened to my knees when they were screaming at me, seems like if I keep that up I'll have many more years of dicking around in the park to come. It always seems like there's a certain age people drop out and just ski pow, this may sound weird but I feel like pow/BC skiing is harder on the knees than even bumps sometimes, at least in manky/choppy conditions?

I'm coming up on 35 and having the best season of my life. I played hockey growing up at a pretty high level so that took up the majority of my winters as a kid, and then played college lacrosse, so I didn't really have a full ski season until grad school.

I ski at Snow Summit every weekend now and the 40 degree sunny weather makes progression so much easier than it was on the east coast. I spin 3's and 5's and hit most rails, but my favorite tricks are just massive floating shiftys off of the biggest jumps in the park.

Maching into a jump, popping super hard and landing perfectly in the sweet spot to me is the best feeling you can get skiing, be it in a sunny spring park or fresh powder. No spinning necessary, just flying.

I always liked true tables or stepovers for big jumps. The joi jump was praised by everybody because true tables are super easy to go huge on.

My dad is 65 and still hits 30 foot park jumps with tweaked out japans, so I'm not giving up hope on my last few bucket list tricks yet. I'm 34, and the flip side of slowing down in the park is that I ski a lot more crud, so I'm actually more comfortable spinning off natural hits than than I was 15 years ago. It's just that when I step back into a serious park with kids tossing doubles at 9AM, I'm like oh shit I haven't done a 7 in three months so this is either gonna be an embarrassing first half of the day or I'm gonna get injured by not doing 36 straight airs first.

Haha holy shit this post made me remember those. Completely forgot and the username didn't stick out to me.

Found this old thread and wanted to thanks for making me feel good and not crazy.

I am turning 40 in a few months. I pretty much started freeski-ing this season (skiboarded for 2 seasons before that and that's pretty much all) when I got some Line Blends. I learnt 180s, box slides (even managed a rail on my last day), trying some buttery stuff and very close to a decent shifty. I am not progressing much, but I am super happy with the way it is, plus I skied the whole season with knee and adductor problems. Goals for next year - 360s, basic rails, and to be able to butter everywhere around the mountain.

That’s awesome man keep sending us aging fellas can still do it lol, look at tabke

Not to be a downer, but my season ended with an edge catch and shoulder dislocation. I’ve been rehabbing myself. Stoked to see all the stoke in this thread. This season I finally landed 2 pretz 2 after a 2 hour long battle with a tube rail.

lol my shoulder is all fucked up as well from 100% same thing, was testing new skis and forgot they were not detuned.

rails & boxes are brutal to us older (30s) people.

wish i'd seen this before, you should definitely try next time you have a good chance, and mentally prep for it in the meantime. i taught my buddy to backy a couple years ago cause he was in the exact same boat as you and having a backflip in your pocket is great, once you have it you have it and can toss it in a line, off a cliff, off a windlip, whatever. i'll be doing them LONG after spins; i don't get to ski much recently and i'll still toss flips but spins i need to get the rust off for. and you live in CO i think so you'll have safe opportunities to try

also they're super fun and get the people goin'. you deserve to have one in your pocket...!

Thats awesome!

I'm another one of those in the late 30s crowd , only my 4th season of skiing.

I'm with you on not progressing much either this season in the tricks department but still accomplished some other physchological things and some park fundamentals.

I think as long as you are happy with your progression and how the season went it not much else matters. The older we are we just don't progress the same rate as the kids do.

I get so jealous but I have to keep reminding myself how old I am. keep forgetting as I my body and mind still feel like early 20s.

So basically right now on Newschoolers us old people are discussing park stuff and there is a thread where young ones are discussing which dad skis to buy ? How the turn tables...

Yeh old guys! I have skied more park this winter than for years and was soo close to getting my first seven the other day, they were coming round, but a bit backseat or overrotated. Looks soft tomorrow so hopefully going to send it. Will post updates.

Two things my brotha .......

1. Shin pressure, you think you got enough of it??? Doubt it man push up and in more with your pop instead of back.

2. if you set a “flat rotation” spin and start doing a Corkish slightly off axis wobble 7 ...... don’t pull out. Keep your head tucked and pray. My 9s were like that this year .... haven’t done one in 3 years sense knee surgery and was attempting them on like 30-40 foot jumps so pushing the spin pretty hard “at least for a 40 year old”. And when I didn’t pull out it went way better my man. Keeeep it in

Haha this turned into a great thread.

Stoked to see so many old-timers refusing to hang up the park skis.

I'm 30 and have not learned a new trick in years. I have however kept my same bag of tricks and still perfecting my favourite trick of them all - the 180.

28 with a 1 year old son, my 55YO dad still rips harder than me.

I hope to be the cool dad on the hill in a few years.

Like said previously, i only do the tricks i am fully confident with like lincoln loops and laying out a back.

Cheers man! I wan't feeling the 7 yesterday but got switch 5s for the first time in a while, so pretty happy with that. Raining today but forecast looks great for next week so the 7 should be on again.

I forgot to age claim! I'm 36.

Someone the other day told me 'you still got it man' not realising that I never had 'it' and this is as good as I have ever been.
