If you want to know what happened to the server, here it is in 20 seconds:

The server was spitting out IO errors so they replaced the hard disk controller. Turns out it wasn't that, so they replaced the hard disk all together, then I had to re-construct the directory structure with all the code, then had to put the databases back together, then import all the pictures and videos from the old hard drive.

Sounds crazy that it took so long to do that, but add in a trip from Whistler to Ottawa, DNS errors, and one large website, and you've got a week!

Thanks for everyone's patience... hopefully it'll be smooth sailing from here.

matt is the man for fixing it. it is kinda sad how crazy people go without ns though. it blew up gethyped.net and the boys even started a ns chat on aim for when it crashes. hahahaha....see how badly we need this site around

lol pat. Yes i ran to gh and the aim chat. Those were fun but the chat went SO fast, it was so hard to keep up with it. reading it that is.

And then it died again..

So what happened that time? Well, there are two things that need to access the mysql database, the site, and the backend admin app. For some reason, they're both trying to access the same user account using different passwords. So if the password is changed so that the admin app works, the site doesn't and vice versa.

We're almost there...... sorry about all the annoyances.

I get all this stuff, cause I program in a few different languages too. But did harvy program most of the site, cause that's mad skills to do that, and keep it running.

Everything was written from scratch except some of the new features.. the classifieds is a hacked script, and so is the ad server thing.. but the rest is all starting with .. get it? hrm..

As far as tutorials go.. go to webmonkey and check out theirs... I do'nt use the same style (the printf garbage) but it'll give you a good starting point.. then read tutorials on phpbuilder.com for a better style (in my opinion) using print or echo statements (I don't see any reason to use printf when you can just use print/echo).

yeah, webmonkeys have some great tutorials as do PHPfreaks.com. PHP is a relativly straight forward language and POWERFULL too! I recommend it definatly.

yeah i also dont use the printf rubbish, echo ''; is the way to go.

Hey harvey, did you code EVERYTHING? even some of the javascripts that you use for the drop downs and stuff? I'm impressed! i ahve to admit i stole some of that javascript for my own site.

one last thing, harvs, was it this site that sued to have a view source buttoin at the bottom? I have a vauge memory of it being a newschoolers thing and would like to see it return so i can learn morw! but if you want to keep it your secret guess thats only fair.
