during the off season i spend most of my time dirtjumping or hittin urban stuff. the occasional time ill hit some freeride tracks. so anyways i was thinking of switchin my bike (its a hartail i built up myself) to single speed so i can barspin and tailwhip. anyone know ths disadvantages of doing that?

its harder to ride with just a single speed. you cant do as much unless you have realy strong legs, but i guess it depends on the gear that you use.

I don't know about changing to single speed if you still do urban, it could be tough at times.

im actually doing the oppostie of you.. I got my bmx single speed like a few years ago. Its really easy to learn barspins rails etc. I find it gets boring after a while, because it takes so much work to bike a long way. If i were you, i would stick with your mountian bike, alot funner and more possibilites

your call man...just remember that you will open up new doors in the urban style of biking but you'll also close doors in everything else

just think about what riding you love and then go with it.

If you are riding dirt jumps, I don't see the problem, same as urban. A good dirt track has a nice flow and very little, if any, pedaling is needed. Look at BMX, they ride nicely with just one gear.

just get a giro and then u can have all gears and front brakes as well

-ski for life.

nwft.

i find myself only using one gear anyway, the only problem is my frame uses vertical dropouts so i might have to buy a rear tensioner

all depends on how far u gotta go. i switched my norco 250 to ss last year and nw im kicking my self cause its a 1/2 and hour ride to the dirt jumps. so yeah

I am building up a surly 1x1 for XC riding. Prepare to get your legs burned on your first few rides. Just get your gearing right and you should be okay.

all my bikes are single speed, my road bike, my trials/urban bike, and obviously my favorite bmx. its the shittness, save loads on derailleurs, more variety or tricks possible, saves weight (not too much, but some), looks hardcore... lol. no i definately dont regret it, ditch your front brake if your riding one aswell, front brakes are soo 2002.

you my friend are retarded.

I ride single speed and it is the best thing i have ever done. I willl never switch back. you will love it, never have to worry about ghost shifting and you get so used to the gear you are a 100% more comfortable on your bike. Honestly hills arent that bad.Or you can extend your shift and brake cables to do them(mmake them long)

does any 1 4x4 mtb race? if so wat r the tracks like and how big r the jumps. I was thinkin of gettin into it but couldnt much info about it. thanx

^ Just try it out. The jumps aren't big at all, but it is quite an exercise and all about picking out and holding a line. You should def. try it, a lot of fun.

jumps look big, but once you hit 'em with speed, you realize that they are really easy to clear. give it a shot.
