For everyone coming off a knee injury, or going through a knee injury.

On April 18 of this year I had surgery for a torn ACL/PCL. I used a hamstring graft for my ACL and a cadaver for the PCL. I worked my ass off in PT and when I had out grown PT i hit the gym pretty hard. Did tons of squats, dead lifts, you get the idea. I got a donjoy defiance 3 brace two weeks ago, and while I can see why some people dont like to wear a brace; It makes my leg feel so much more stable and gives me a little extra confidence.

Yesterday, I went skiing. And god damn did it feel good! No pain at all, my leg didnt feel weak or anything. I am fucking pumped at how well everything went.

So for everyone going through the recovery process, you will get there. You just gotta work hard and really listen to what your physical therapists and surgeon tell you. As long as your really trying your hardest you will be back on the snow in no time. I would recommend a brace, but hey, to each his own.

Happy winter yo

The fuck is this shit. Congrats, but I had surgery for ACL/ partial meniscus two days later, worked my ass off too, and I'm stuck off snow til January. Great to hear it won't be forever though. Also, braces don't do shit according to medical studies. Nice to know you got peace of mind.

well I wouldnt say they dont do shit. Can you still fuck up your knee while wearing one? absolutely, but they do help.

I'm just going off what my father the orthopedic surgeon told me. I asked if it'd help, and he's gotten me shit for injuries before but said not to bother this time. If it's going to reinjure your knee, the brace won't make a difference.

yeah, what the hell... Same injury, got surgery with the patellar graft on may 2nd, and while my strength is back, it feels like it's being stabbed with things like 1-legged squats and still feels unstable. I've done everything they told me and more. I'm getting worried about the season.

I had both acls reconstructed in march because some lady hit me in a lift line. Shits tough, I'm stuck off snow till febuary!

hey man kinda in the same boat dude.just take skiing easy and kill it next year. I plan on easing into skiing taking weeks months until im ready to go 100% but its all how you're feeling. There is no rush. But fun will always be there. good luck man

Went skiing today for first time since ACL/partial meniscus surgery in march. Hurt. Hoping insurance will cover a brace. Anyone have a donjoy armour ski version? I've heard good things.

yeah man sounds good!! i have to wait for another month till i´m back on skis. but yeah, i´m so fucking excited!! ma leg feels really good too :)

Tore ACL and had surgery in Feb.

Will post again in here once I've skied, and let you know how it goes. Great work OP you obviously put a lot into building it back up.

Well more than anything my knee just feels unstable. Weather the brace protects it or not, it is said to give it more stability. Also everyone says it helps with pain and since I half assed my physical therapy, I have a decent amount of pain still when I ski. Plus if i can get insurance to pay, I'm all over it.

Just a little advice- I would lay off the squats and dead lifts if I were you. For the whatever amount of muscle it builds in your legs, it puts 10 times over in the amount of stress to your knees. Squats without weights are good, also lunges, but stay away from deadlifts. They don't really do a thing that will help in skiing, besides put a shitton of stress on your knees and back

I needed to hear this. Thank you. I'm currently dealing with the recovery of a torn ACL and meniscus. I'll be back on snow in december and I have high hopes.

That's probably a sign you shouldn't be skiing yet. My knee feels quite stable but I'm still not cleared to ski. If it feels unstable don't push it.

doc says im cleared to ski. Its not like its gonna give way unstable, just i dont feel like i can trust it a ton unstable.

Braces definitely help with the whole hyper-extension issue. DonJoy allows you to change the angle at which your brace will lock up so as not to even come close to hyper-extending.

It'd help a bit with hyperextension; I've used that for a broken elbow. That's not gonna do anything for your ACL, though. Unless you literally drill pins into your knee it can still twist left and right independently of the brace.

Damn this makes me nervous. I dislocated my knee really badly about 4 years ago-destroyed my ligaments and tendons, but was just short of tearing my ACL and didn't need surgery. I went through PT and still do the exercises I was assigned, but my knee still moves around a lot. Last weekend it dislocated worse than ever despite the knee brace I was wearing and its been hurting like a bitch since.

I was really hoping that a new brace would help, but it sounds like it won't?

Also, does anyone know how running might affect this situation? My knee doesn't hurt while I run, but always does afterwords.

im going to disagree with you. My physical therapist has encouraged both dead lifts and squats. When squatting, I feel zero pain.

I have been doing straight leg dead lifts to work on my hamstrings (i had a hamstring graft) and again, zero pain.

By hyper-extension do you mean (or include) bending of the knee backwards, or in the "wrong" direction? This is where I have most fear for my ACL & it's a similar feeling to what happened in the moment beofre I tore my ACL.

Thanks bro, i got acl hamstring surgery in June and ive been skiing for the past 3 weeks with a brace and it feels great. Tip to anyone going through this is to not slack off on your PT, its worth it in the end.

Fuck knee injuries, I'm still recovering from a shattered patella from almost 18 months ago. I've already had 3 surgeries on it, will need a fourth before long to remove any leftover bone shards that are still floating around, and I get to have a full knee replacement within 5 years. I'm only 21. FUCK.

WHAT?!

Are you fucking kidding me?

Why's that?

Mad karma for the shattered patella btw. Buddy had a broken one last season but was fine after 3 months of cast.

Just had surgery for a partially torn meniscus. The doctor said that the meniscus got squished which caused it to tear. I'm guessing from casing too many jumps. Doctor says 6 weeks for recovery, but would I be able to ski any sooner, or should I just wait? Never had surgery before this, so I'm just looking for any insight and tips for what I should be doing post-surgery. Just icing and elevating right now.
