For all the Wallisch lovers out there, an insight into his season

I have been skiing without acl for 3 seasons now. For last 2 seasons without part of menisc (after an overshoot). I am apsolutely NOT taking it easy. /claim

Yeah because he doesn't have qualified professionals to tell him his best options. You guys are so stupid. Look at the context. He wanted a shot at the Olympics. To have no regrets.

This is the first ski related video I've seen in probably 6 months, or whenever I last signed in. Glad it was Tom Wallisch, and to see that he's the same as he ever was... that's the tits. For him it's probably a huge disappointment, but it's not a failure. Great attitude, great skier, his future is as bright as it's always been and it's nice to see that. Speaking of which, what's Tanner Hall up to? Thovex? Who's on top/hot shit atm?

And can anyone give me some insight about his chances at the olympics? Is there slopestyle or just halfpipe? Was it likely he would have medaled given all the other gymnasts that will be there?

If only there were some sort of digital information sharing system that stored information like this. Oh well.

Tom is a champ. That video made me like him way more. That being said I think if I'm a coach and it's my job to win medals, I don't send the injured skier that hasn't been skiing at his peak all year and is very vulnerable to injury. I get that Tom is dope and has triples that could win but still...

Not scared to say it. Tom is the michael jordan of whatever you want to call this segment of skiing that we all love.

are you kidding me? tom came back incredibly early to a competitive level, and to deny there were massive risks is straight up retarded. 6 weeks is pretty much a minimum to return to sport, but to then ski at the top level in a sport which has massive stress on the knees anyway is pretty dangerous. As you said he could have wrecked other ligaments in his knee and fucked his meniscus, which could have then been more than a years worth of rehab after surgery, and a shitty knee for the rest of his life. But obviously he needed to get back as soon as possible to remain competitive enough to have a real shot at the olympics

Obviously he will but it will be interesting to see when he does it. I think I remember him saying he was gonna do it asap but he could wait til April and ski the rest of the year

Ya? after that first Dew Tour when he skis into the tent in pain, that looks "totally functional" to you huh?? I think it's FUCKING CRAZY to ski without an ACL, and I think anyone who believes you (or Wallisch, or anyone) can perform 100% without it, are just retarded. If you've ever fully torn your ACL, you know that shit just doesn't work like it's supposed to.
I got nothing but love for Tom, but I am so sick of hearing that he should still be going to the Olympics with a totally fucked up body.

ACL is more than just physical pain/weakness, the mental block and lack of confidence on the most important joint for skiing (arguable but still, you knees do alot) plays a huge factor as well. if you can get past the mental block, you can then strengthen your knee and perform to almost 100% (spriggs years ago had one of his best comp seasons with no acl and russ has been pretty rock solid as well).

Even tom still looks pretty confident normally skiing but its the big tricks and landing forward twisting that scares the shit out of him. He even admitted it to the espn lady at the bottom of the xgames course that his switch dub 9 was really scary for him.

mad respect for that guy . tom is the man, loved the positive attitude at the end when he was talking about not making it to the olympics , "im still stoked to watch all my friends destroy it over there " or something round those lines, just goes to show there are some damn good people in this sport. and tom is definitely one of them . good watch for sure. some real cool shots in there.

So I guess its safe to say now that X is over and he is not going to the olympics that he will be having the surgery shortly thus putting skiing on the shelf until late summer or beginning of next season.

I agree with his decision to go for it. I would have done the same, but now that he's not going to compete in Sochi I would personally be thinking about next season. If he gets it repaired now he can come back stronger than ever next season. I'm telling you right now that a repaired ACL is better than no ACL. You literally cannot argue against that. It is a fact.

The only bones I've broken were in pow. It takes a lot of the impact, but doesn't stop making things move in ways they shouldn't.

I'm currently sitting here with a torn acl. I know what it's like. I am definitely not going to ski on this, but it is certainly possible. After a few weeks you almost can't even tell you have a torn acl

Until you have the surgery and realise how much more stable your knee is even within days of the operation

Wow, this video is powerful. Great work 4bi9 so many beautiful shots, great editing.

I had heard Tom blew his knee a while ago but this video really shoves the struggle in your face. Joss' latest results make him a good pick on paper, and his skiing is really sick, but discretionary picks not being used for veterans like this who helped invent the sport is tough to see. I am a huge fan of Tom's skiing and will say once more, I dont give a fuck if you got 6th vs 8th or 11th instead of 5th, the Olympics will be worse off without the style and aesthetics of Tom's riding.

if it's possible and you can perform 100% like you claim tom should be able to, then why don't you ski on it? you might feel like it doesn't hinder you, but I bet that when you actually get out there you'll sure as hell feel it.

it's not gonna be 100%, but it is certainly skiable. I don't want to ski on mine because I don't want to risk anything more happening to it. Could I? Sure. Is it worth it for me, a random 21 year old east coast park rider? not really. Is it worth it for Tom, a 26 year old Pro skier who is essentially the face of our sport, trying to get into the olympics, which he may only have one shot at? Certainly.
