Play a Fender Strat and a Gibson Les Paul. See which one you like more. Get a Les Paul Studio or something for about 1000. Or get an American Strat for about 500-900, depending used or not. You're set for a long time. Trust me, drop the extra few hundred and get a real nice guitar. Those epiphones won't last you too long before you're looking for a new guitar.

ooh my bad i said b.c rich when i meant to say parker fly. If u want blues/jazz i recomend an ibanex rg570.

or maybe a fernendes, or if your looking for somethin cheap, the gibson les paul black beauty is a steal.

yes. do this. i have an american strat, it's fucking great, and i've played a les paul studio and those are very nice as well, so take your pick.

personally, i think that with only 4 years of experience, you should go with any kind of fender stratocaster. they're cheap enough for the beginner, but if you progress and progress over the years like me, you can keep upgrading your guitar fairly easily. here's what i did:

-bought a fender mexican strat for $250 off ebay during my 3rd year of playing

-did a hole bunch of minor add-ons in the first year i owned it

-the next year i bought a new bridge

-the next year i bought a new neck, with the exact same writing on the head, to preserve the guitar's roots. the neck is like playing a stick of butter.

-for the next couple years, i did practically nothing. then i got sick of my weak, yet bluesy mexican single coil pickups. they're practically the same as american single coils, but with a little less twang and more feedback. so i bought a pair of seymour duncan hotrails, which are the highest output pickups that SD makes and they're specially designed to fit into single coil pickup slots. i put those in the bridge and neck position, and left in the middle SC pickup, just as a filler for the space, even though its not hooked up.

so now i have a guitar that would retail easily for over $1500 if it was purchased from a store, but since i did all these adjustments myself, i probably spent about $800 total on this guitar.

go with the strat. its versitaile and cheap but it can be made to sound like any other guitar on the market (besides hollow body electrics).

Fenders are about the best you can get in the price range youre looking for. Telecasters are always a good bet along with Starts but it depends somewhat of what kind of music you play. A Tele is good for a blues sound but also good with distortion in on it. A Strat is good for rythem and a good deep tone sound. Theyve got a bunch of other models as well like the jazzmaster which is amazing in my opinion. Other than Fenders though, I wouldnt really go with Epiphones because of their quality. its like a squire to a Fender. So to sum my rant all up here id say go with a Fender, or keep saving to buy a real Gibson.

thats nice right there. so hey ive got an idea for you though since youve been playing for 4 years. get the epiphone you want, but also buy gibson pickups and have the store install them for you or whoever. itll cost a hell of a lot less that a gibson but youll still get the sound of a gibson

good choice theres nothing wrong with epiphones i actually cant find any differences between a gibson and an epiphone

in my phone book theres a guy with the name of Harry Surprise.. - Jibvermont

yehyeh....i was planning on getting that guitar and then in a while get new emgs for it and set it up like zakk wyldes guitars....that way the only difference will be the wood that the body is made out of.

shit i am a massive post whore in this thread....oh well.....the only difference between gibson and epiphone is that 1. gibson is i think about 95% hand made...thus having less imprefections and 2. is made of a heavier, denser would therefore creating a different sound tone. its all apples and oranges.

I modded this thing to shit. I have all seymour duncan pickups in there. I have a george lynch in the neck, a hot rails in the middle, and an invader at the bridge. there's a 3-way switch that selects the neck pickup, neck and bridge, or bridge. the tone knob is a puh/pull knob that turns on the hot rails. there are 2 toggle switches that switch the humbuckers from series mode, single coil, or parallel. you can get so many different tones with this configuration. sounds great. the only problem with it is a small chip that you can see in the pictures. Comes with original pickups installed in a pickgaurd, another black pickgaurd, gig bag, and a hard case. Probably going for around $600. Price is negotiable.

Derek

go with a carvin, they have the best value out of anything. go to www.carvin.com and check out the bolt or dc-127. its a complete custom shop so you can pick your options and what not. i have a dc-127 and its just as good as higher end PRS's and Gibsons.

dont get an epiphone if you have 3grand to spend. Get the real thing for about 2 grand. But since you only have about 4 years i'd suggest prolly either a PRS or a fender. They are both pretty solid guitar makers and produce sweetsounds. If you are really interested in Jazz maybe you could get a telecaster. They have a real nice bluesy sound. And with fenders u can always mod them to super sweetnes

dont go with epiphone man, get a quality strat, which is pretty much what everyone else in this thread has suggested. it will last you longer and the options for mods is much more diverse, hence making your possible tones vary greatly. id recommend the mexi or telecaster

what kind of music do you play? technical or just power chords? if your a techy player, i would not recommend a strat at all. (strong personal opinion).

get an ESP or Ibanez. but if your just power chords and shit then ya

Gibson: better sounds

Epiphone: nicer parts (ie. wood, fancy designs) but sound not quite as good as gibson.

It's all apples and oranges my good man.

What type of music do you play cause thats a huge determinant in figuring out what guitar is best for you? If you want a guitar that will be good clean and slightly distorted you can't go wrong with a Strat. If your looking for a fuller tone that may not be so trebly you cant go wrong with a lower end Les Paul or SG. Also, if your into metal ibanez and jacksons are great. Most importantly play whatever you feel might fit you and decided based on how they play, not just on the name, or what others have told you.

yeah get the american strat, you can usually find 'em out there for 800ish

sir holland, youd make a wonderful choice with the epiphone les paul. dosnt quite play up to par with the gibson's, but i seriously doubt you have an extra grand or two in your pockets. personally, i hate fenders, just cant stand the way they look. great guitars, horrible look. now the les paul and the most SG's are damn good lookin. plus they play like a porn star. orgasmicly.
