Football Scholars: Barry Sanders vs. Emmit Smith

This is one of the seminal debates in pro football history. Forget the greats like Jim Brown and Walter Payton for a second. Granted, they were lions of the game, but this is between Smith and Sanders. I'll take Barry Sanders any day. This guy is the epitome of class, never celebrated touchdowns, always handed the ball to the ref and went right on playing. No drama, all juke. This guy was nuts.

this is the wrong crowd to be asking football questions too. most kids here hate on football because of the equipment and the fact that it's boring to watch. there are a lot of patriots fans too... and you know what they say about patriots fans....

what the hell are you talking about?

anyway barry sanders, everytime. the man was in another class of athlete, it's too bad we didn't see more of him.

yeah emmit smith was more consistent and played for a lot longer but barry sanders played for the detroit fucking lions and in his prime he was way better than emmit smith ever was at any point in his career

sanders was the most fun to watch always finding a way out of every situation. i wore #20 all throughout high school because of him.

There are a few football fans on here... but if you have been a part of just about ANY football thread on these forums, there are more haters than people who rep the game (like ourselves)

^ haha, I live in MA. SPYGATE!!!! Pats are sick, but Barry Sanders is the man. I wore his jersey in elementary school and middle school. guy was so sick

o.J. simpson!!!!
no but sanders for sure, i dont know too much about "old" football, seeing how no one in my family watches football cept me, and i only started watching it four years ago, but im learning!!!!

anyways the GREAT Marvin Harrison is leaving the COLTS!!!!!! im kinda sad, but numbers dont lie, well in this case if you were looking at his salary you would think he is the greatest reciever in the league right now.... but hes only caught 80 passes in the last TWO seasons.... C'mon Albert Haynesworth!!!!!!!! though that wont happen....

i hope by "haters" you mean the uninformed. if so, then yeah.

in any case, i love football and would be glad to discuss it anytime. although nobody probably wants to hear my opinion right now because i'm from pittsburgh, HA. jk though, i'm a humble fan.

think of it this way: smith was a great, sanders is INSANE. him and walter payton go down as the 2 best backs in the history of the game.

sorry patriots fans... but the rivalry does continue on into the offseason...

I've only really had the pleasure of watching Emmit Smith play extensively, and to me he is the model for what you look for in an every-down back. Someone who can take a beating, get you 100 yards a game, block, catch balls out of the backfield and score touchdowns. a true bell-cow back.

dont even wanna compare the two. i see old clips of both and am blown away. im a rb too but shits nuts

look at the talent they had around them....cowboys opponents had to respect michael irving and troy aikmen. lions opponents could put 9 or 10 guys in the box and sanders still averaged almost a full yard per carry than smith. put sanders on that cowboys team...wow that woulda been scary. imagine sanders playing on a team where he didnt have to carry the ball 30 times a game for them to have a chance, imagine him playing against defenses scared of the pass too...dude woulda killed it. thats the reason he left, the lions NEVER tried to give him help, they never had a good QB while he was there. yeah, herman moore was one of the best recievers of the time, but he was a possesion reciever who caught 8 yard first downs after sanders ran for 7 on first then the QB got sacked for 5 on 2nd...

barry sanders hands down. not just because im a loyal, die hard lions fan. its because hes simply the best running back ever to play

Sanders ALL DAY LONG!!! Only runningback I've ever liked. Most classy, humble player in the history. Handed the ball right to the ref after each score, never ran his mouth, was always gracious. Was never a pussy like LT. Sanders killed it in a shorter career than Smith. Plus, Sanders played for the Lions, probably the worst team in the history of the game.
