Foil size for the Rockies?

ok, so i'm going out to Vail for an entire week and gonna hit up some of the surrounding resorts (i.e. copper and breck). I went last year but i was on some year 2000 salomon equipe axe teams since ive raced my whole skiing career. Now, for christmas, i figur its time to get a big mountain ski to shred the powder of the sun bowl but also handle the park and frontside. I have already decided on the Foil's so thats not really what is up for discussion. What is however, is the size.

I'm 5'10, 170 Lbs. I know most of you would recommend the 182 over the 174, but I feel that I would have a lot more fun on the 74s. Just as a reference, The old axe teams were 169 and i used them for GS, using a rossi 9x (160 cm) for slalom.

Do you guys think the 182 is slightly to big for an all around carve, or do you think i should "pop for the full size." I would go bigger but id rather have slightly shorter and easier ski for spins and groomers, or do you think 174 for my size is just a no-no. Thoughts?

good call, but isn't there something about a freeride line on salomon skis, where there recommended spot is already foward. Ive heard people say to go 2-5 back to get more all mountain. Knowing this i would still prolly put them at recommended freeride line because people have said it skis great all-mountain at rec. mount.

Anyone else have any advice/thoughts?

Another thing brought to my mind is lifters. I'm porlly gonna go with the 912 or 912ti and was wondering why the majority of skiers here say to go without the lifter. Ive been on them my whole life and im not so much of a rail guy but more a fan of kickers and freeskiing. My thought is just to put the lifter on and get the extra leverage as it probably won't affect me too much in the park and give me better carving everywhere else. Anyone disagree?

You need lifters on narrow skis to prevent "boot out" with a wider waist it just isn't needed. You will still be able to rail those skis without lift. Don't do it.

sorry, i've never been on a big-daddy-fat-sack powder all mountain ski before. And naw, i wasnt terrible, had some FIS points, not amazing, but decent.

But seriously, no lifters? its like half an inch. is it really that much of a difference with or without them?

You don't need lifters. Sure it makes fatter skis super fun on the groomed but thats it. If you were a strong racer you will have no probs carving the foil with no lifters. If you don't believe us try asking at tetongravity.com or biglines.com. You will get the same response.

Look at the bindings that companys make to match their twins. All have minimal lift.

i find it does. Think about if. If your lower on the ski you have more control and it makes park skiing easier. Put it down to your %'s. more park=no lift. more park=put lifters on if u want but i didnt find them that much better for carving.

alright, thanks for the input. I'll look at the lifter and prolly not put it on since the foil is at 80+ in the mid.

Hopefully it just DUMPS when im out there
