Focus

The average attention span of a human is only 8.25 seconds. That's less than the goldfish's 9 second attention span!

If thats true, I just posted the first thing presented to me... that agreed with what I was about to post about, so I could pervasively persuade you?

Im a victim of this lack of focus, and it got so bad that I have been fighting back. My generation is a hybrid of this newschool , digitalized era of "flash focusing" ( i just coined that phrase...) Before my generation, the highlight of entertainment was to roll a fatty and put on a record... and listen to it , not just in completion, but until the vinyl grooves wore the fuck out. I had a discman, and a collection of cds, that I had to keep hidden... while i backpacked my skateboard around riding a BMX bike...

It was the IPOD! that ruined listening to an album. our favorite mixes took over listening to an entire cd... I produced mix tape style cds with the Napster...

I dont remember the first time i stared at my phone, and im thinking hard about it right now... i guess it would have been the first time i downloaded instagram. before that, we didnt have smart phones with apps, it was just a phone, or a walkie talkie.

the idea of watching a clip of skiing on insta verse an entire efforts worth of an edit on NS is gone. Even when im watching top rated videos, on my computer!, im usually distracted by something... so if its a kids 60 view edit video, it probably doesnt stand a chance of more than 10 seconds of absolute attention payings.

so there you sit on the NS app, with tiktok flashing clips faster than you can comprehend, waiting to flush the toilet... lol

With all that brainrot spewed... I have been fighting back...

I have a collection of really good cds, worth listening to in completion, and when i drive, i pay attention to the road with no phone distractions... and enjoy the ride with good tunes and scenery. no stop and go traffic; billboards...

I write this, with the blizzard of ahhhhss in the background, mostly to keep my stoke factor at the highest level, but I should have turned it off and enjoyed writing this even more... my dog needed some attention, and is now sleeping soundly in her bed, so no matter what, im potentially always distracted by her well being. when i finish this post, i will reset, and pick a really good movie to focus on and enjoy in its entirety without distractions of ebay, FB, CL, insta; any digital distractions.

Maybe , just maybe, Ill read a book, or play my guitar tonight...

(nah, this wasnt bus stop jargon...)

tl;dr

No, I think this is an important issue in today's world. Although, even before smartphones and instagram took over, I remember being told that the average person had the attention span of 5 words. I tested it out on one of my friends in middle school once while we were on the bus by asking him to read the emergency fire exit sticker on one of the windows. He made it to 4 words before going, "Ah, I don't care."

If anything, the unlimited access to all of this digital stimulation is enabling more than causing our poor attention spans--and it sounds like that's what you're saying.

I remember sitting down for hours at a time and reading as a kid, or watching shows and giving them my absolute attention. I can still do that, but it's much harder, because in the back of my mind there's always the urge to check my phone and see if someone texted me or if I have other notifications.

It's honestly kind of sad that things have gotten to this point. It's sort of on par with high-calorie foods becoming too accessible and causing obesity. Seems people are really good at turning something good into something bad. Next it will be AI and autonomous vehicles; conveniences that will become oppressive and cause suffering.

Lol attention span is 8.25 seconds and writes an absolute book. TLDR

Executive summary with bullet points please

for starters i appreciate that people took the time to read that book. on my 17" screen, its only two paragraphs... yet i tried to re-read it, and i skip across my own writing... MIB2 plays in the background, and i had to pause it to try to focus on this thread topic , and of all "natural distractions" my dog has woken up and desperately wants my attention away from the computer...! she squeaks a toy in my ear...

i have absolutely found an improvement in life, by not letting the distractions over power me. by focusing on what im doing, without a fake IG notification sucking me in... if you are reading this, focus more on making good food, watch intelligent productions, spend money wisely, spend your time wisely, stop letting AI or apps do Anything for you... outsmart the system!

use that brain until it hurts!
