Flypaper Avalanche - Glencoe Ski Area (6/02/09)

Today, some unknowing guy triggered a slide on the flypaper at

glencoe ski area. From the information i have gathered the flypaper was closed

all day because of high avalanche danger (CAT 4). What is disturbing is, there wasn’t

any thing on the top station information board warning people about the conditions

apparently. But, there was a warning on the mid station information board about

the F.P been closed due to high avalanche danger. What good is having the warning on the mid

station, but not the top as well?

There was high winds, with snow what fell over night has

formed deep accumulation of windslab in sheltered locations. The greatest

accumulations are on north-east through south to westerly aspects and in all

sheltered gullies. – I SEE RED FLAGS HERE, DO YOU.

It’s not the first time this winter that, some clueless goon

as skied the flypaper when the avalanche danger is high. This really shows you,

how clueless people are about the dangers right now. The red flags were there,

telling him that the snowpack was unstable. Plus it looks like he never had any

of the basic avalanche gear either.

Notice The Crown On The Top Right Of The Photo.

Yeah, here is the written part of the report.

: Snow Cover Distrubution

Most Terrain has Good Cover.

:: Surface Conditions Rating Out of 5

3

:: Weather Conditions

Light snow flurry and blue skies at the carpark on arrival.

By the time we reached the tows the wind was blowing around 30mph and

steadily worsened as the day wore on. By late morning the wind was 40

gusting 60 with visibility down to 5 meters in snow/hail showers and

spindrift. Cloudy from around 11 onwards with poor visibility most of

the day due to spindrift making it difficult to see the terrain in

front of you

:: Snow Conditions & Further Information

Most runs with full cover though very icy where wind scoured, plenty of powder drifts where deposited by the wind.

Stay clear of the fly paper as that is where the avalanche took place.

Only signposted as closed at the mid station, even by our last run at 3

there was no indication of any closed runs at the top station

information board, should have checked at the mid station but hey we

lived to tell the tale!

Seems like they really don't care which is a terrible attitude to have and will probably see them killed if they carry on, it is just irresponsible.

The same conditions are present all over Scotland. Was at Glenshee on Friday and Glas Maol was closed due to the avalanche danger (as it was today). People here need to wise up a little bit to the risk before something similar to the 3 deaths last week happens again.

I'll be at glenshee every day next week skiing. I was

thinking going up on sunday, but i think the weather isn’t looking to good. So

i might have a wee session on my backyard set-up again.
