Flying with Skis

Hey NS,

I am going to be flying to Colorado this Saturday for the first time ever. I was wondering if anyone had any insight on the best way to get your skis over there? I had a soft case, but it unforunately ripped early season. Does anybody have any suggestions on a cheap/safe way to get your skis across the country?

get another soft case, bubble wrap and throw some cardboard around the bindings for some extra protection and you'll be good. my go to method when flying

Soft bag is best, airports in colorado are used to people traveling with skis. Ive never had a problem flying with them, and I know if you fly southwest they dont charge you an oversized bag fee.

I did softbag, threw in some plastic bags and my wrapped my jacket and pants around the skis last time I flew (with Alaska). Everything arrived ok. TSA decided to open up the ski bag both ways. Boots tucked into my carry-on. Paid an extra $25 on each leg of the trip, but it's much less than renting from the pro-shop.

I have flown with my skis simply saran wrapped +30 times and have never had a problem. Think about what your skis go through when you are riding them. Getting chucked into the cargo hold of an airplane isn't going to hurt them.

When I went to Utah a few weeks ago I flew with my skis and all my clothing in a soft bag. The clothes fit great (5 days worth) and everything was well protected. There was no additional bag fee as I brought my boots, electronics, and toiletries onboard with me in a backpack.I really do suggest carrying on the boots because if the people misplace your skis its not too much of a pain to rent/demo but when you lose your boots it is.

Soft bag works great. Try to fix your bag with duct tape and use it. If your bag is too far gone you might be able to get a cardboard ski box for free from a shop. Use the flying greyhound if you can. Carry on your boots.

I've done cheap soft bags even straight contractor sized garbage bags.. no one is going to toss fucking skis guitars etc ... unless you're flying out of Newark, nj

I flew DC to Boston and back with my skis wrapped in socks, underwear, and random bits of cardboard covered in string and duct tape. Didn't even get charged for oversized luggage.

New hampshire, vermont, maine, etc I assume.

OP, I got a big ass hard case for a couple pairs of skis + poles and it worked great. Just check it and you won't have a problem.

Flown my skis on 5 different occasions, all in a soft bag on Southwest. Two pairs in the bag (pow and park) along with random other shit I being home from school. The way I look at it, think of the beating bindings take skiing park, compare that to just being in a bag getting tossed around a little. Granted, anything can happen, but so far so good for my soft bag.

Flown with skis in a soft bag a bunch of times, I usually put snow pants, jacket, base layers and sweats in with my skis for padding, works great and saves space in main luggage bags.
