flying with bikes

Hey, Im taking my bike to Australia (from UK) at the end of this week and I was just wondering if anyone has any experience withtaking bikes on planes.

Getting info out of the airline is like trying to draw blood from a bloody stone, they're clueless!

The thing Im worried about is the change in air pressure. Is the cargo hold of the plane pressurised like the cabin? Do you think I should let some air out of the tires? And what about the rear shock?

Any help is much appreciated

it is a total pain in the ass to travel with your bike, you have to fit it into one of those tiny cardboard boxes and it costs a shitload. BEST ADVICE that I can give you is to get it shipped to wherever you are going via UPS or Fedex or something. Unless you are going on vacation, if you are going on vacation the best plan is, to scope at where your going, see if there is a local bike shop (with a good selection of rental bikes). I went to tortolla and got a sweet full suspension gary fisher for a week for cheaper than it would cost to ship your bike plus alot less work...hope that helps.

yea..just let all the air out of your tires..or they could pop..and it shouldnt be too much trouble if u take apart the handlebars so that it can fit in a box thats like 10 inches wide.. just buy a boz...tape it up..and put it in as one of tour pieces of luggage..makle sure to bubblewrap it or u might get dents and scratches

Yah, get a 'body bag' by Ground Effects. It's a big ass bag that fits your bike in it when you take off handlebars and seat. Has padding in all the right places and pockets for seat and bars so you don't have to take cables off, perfect, designed for that very purpose, 40 bucks US I think. Big ass carry handles and yeah, let the air out of your tyres and maybe open up your shocks too.

Or here's a better idea... don't be such a freakin pussy and ride your bike to your destenation.. nah I'm just kidding... hmm... bicycling magazine had an excellent article recently.. I think it was the december issue of last year i don't remember.. but yea hmmm... the basics, take your wheels off and handelbars then wrap your frame and other stuff and well... hmm... i dont remember... tomorrow i will so I'll post it then

It's not much trouble at all to get your bike into a bike box. Just take the stem/handle bars off. Just loosen the bolts on the stem that tighten onto the steer tube of the fork, then the stem and bars will just slide off. You don't have to take the stem off the bars

Then just take the pedals off and take the front wheel off.

Or what you could do is, take you bike to a bike shop and ask them to put your bike into a box for you. Most shops will do this.
