I am making my first 'big' ski trip - flying out to UT. What/how should I get my skis there? (meaning, hard case, ship through different carrier...)...help?

yeah dude check em fo sho, i take mine all over world, no worries just get insurance, for my trip to mammoth i have to pay 4% of the price of equipment to get it coverd. but shouldnt be near that for you coz im going int'l. just call air line or go to travel agent.

Those hard ski containers seem good...I forgot the brand. But they lengthen/collapse to your skis size. I personally use a padded ski bag and check it. Salt lake Airport has a special spot where ski bags come out, I think. Do yourself a favor though and wrap your skis in some heavy winter clothing you are taking....just adds some protection. Although the edges can cut your clothes if you do it wrong. Also, don't try to take 2 pr. skis in one bag. The airlines screwed me one year and made me pay $80 because they said it qualified as an extra piece of equpiment.

Ya A little while ago we went out west and brought our skis, the take good care of them but you should still have then in a padded ski bag but like he said above one of those solid ski containers would probably be better.

I have taken my ski (as many as 4 pair in one bag) and never had a problem. Like mentioned before, get a padded bag, wrap em in either bubble wrap or towels work really well too. If you are gonna throw some clothes in there too I would limit it to long underwear and socks and the like. Nothing that can rip or that would be a major loss if the skis got lost/delayed.

As far as insurance goes, get it. And if you can insure a specific value for the equiptment, always estimate it a bit high, you'll pay a little more but you better covered if something does happen.

Also, as far as the bag goes, make sure you get one with wheels. It makes it a lot easier for the baggage handlers to lug around, and they'll be less likely to mistreat it. Most airlines also do not allow large shoulder straps, so if your bag has em, make sure they're removable, and when you get to the airport, take it off and either keep it with you, or stick it in the bag.

Every major airport I've been in has a separate place to check/get large/oversized luggage (skis in this case). Talk to someone at the airport and find out where you gotta check em in, and when you get your checked bags, look around for a door (typically garage door type) with a sign oversized luggage. If you can't find one, ask someone that works there.

Also, remember that because of increased security concerns, you cannot lock your bags. If you put locks they might have to cut out the zipper and then your screwed. If you are concerned about your baggage possibly opening up in transit, use zip-ties and not locks. There easy to cut if they need to and usually they'll replace em.

You should be fine, I've never had a problem with my skis, just remember to be courteous, and have wheels on any big/heavy/awkward bag that you check.

life is too short to have any regrets

The hard cases are called Sporttubes and they work great. Just surround them with clothing when you put them in. The hard shell is perfect for flying because if you do get the guy who's having a bad day handling your bags he's gonna toss em around like a baseball. If you have a cushion bag like I used to use either the bag gets tore up from the floor up or something on your skis break (both have happened to me)....there's alot that happens to those bags behind the scenes.

I didnt have a padded ski bag, but i surrounded my skis (in the bag) with clothes and stuff and it really padded them well. Then you check them and your set. It's not a big deal.
