Fly Fishing the Provo

Whattup guys,

I'm roadtripping with my roommate and some buddies for spring break. Skiing Vail, then hitting up Park City, and most likely gonna fish at least a day.

Does anyone have experience on the Provo River? Particularly the Upper through Victory Ranch, or whatever section heads through Heber/Midway.

Do's/ Don't's, go to patterns, sections to check out.

Any input would be dope
 
The "middle Provo" below Jordanelle Reservoir heading down towards Heber is a super popular stretch and is really close to Park City. It's good fishing but can be pretty crowded sometimes. If you are driving through SLC stop at Western Rivers fly shop and they can give you some good beta.

The upper Provo through Victory Ranch is in the middle of a stream access fight and the courts have closed off a lot of the access through there so it would be best to avoid that section until the case is settled.

What above said- Upper you wont be able to fish now unless you want to play with law enforcement at some point or a crazy land owner.

Middle section flows thru Heber/Midway. Great fishing but can be crowded depending on day and spot you choose. Lots of access points, you will see Provo river restoration signs. Pull onto dirt roads, park, walk, scope it out. Water levels are low, easy to get around right now, find deep pools, try diff. flys.

Try diff. nymphs, I like sow bugs alot. sculp zilla, dark purple wooly bugger can work magic too.

I tend to use a single fly, diff. weights depending on water speed and depth once I figure out the right one. 50-60 inch setup I think with indicator. fly- few inches to 2.5 feet, leader-9 ft. something like that...

You could always try some ice-off fishing at a reservoir too. I was st Deer Creek yesterday, fished from shore, caught some big boys. Middle provo flows into Deer Creek. Also Jordanelee and East Canyon can be good.

Do: get license, pack it in and pack yo shit out

you should be able to catch some smaller browns- good luck, have fun on your trip!
 
there is nice entry just off US 40 heading into heber. You have to be heading from pc into heber! I think its south bound. Head down the hill, just before the bottom there is a gravel pullout next to the fence. Probably the least crowded portion of the river.
