Hey guys, would anybody here be interested in putting together a beginners guide to flyfishing article from the minds and mouths of the NS flyfishing community? I'd be willing to head off the project, and I know there are a few more guides here that would be willing to drop some knowledge about there area of expertise. If you're interested in this idea, just shoot me a message and we can get this started. It might be a good project when you're stuck at your desk, or when its raining on the hill. If you can, drop a bio, and what/where you would like to showcase. This doesn't need to be strictly geared towards the beginner, but it might be a good idea to at least hit up a gear list.

Can't believe i'm just seeing this thread now. I dont think there is a better hobby to pair with skiing than fly fishing. One season picks up when the other winds down with relatively little overlap. Hate to say it but I actually think I prefer fishing at least at the moment. I'm doing an exchange semester at MSU and decided to go fall semester to fish instead of spring to ski and I haven't regretting the decision at all. The trout fishery here in SW Montana is unbelievable, nothing on the east coast can even compare. That being said, I am 100% addicted to saltwater fly fishing. Mostly for stripers in New England, anyone else ever try it? Something about being on a beach or in a marsh at 3 AM in July that got me completely addicted.

I've gone out with my bait caster and bass fished 2-3 times a week all summer long for the last 7 years or and have a solid background in fishing in general so and i want to try something new. I have a small stream by my house that I've seen smallmouth and rock bass, loads of panfish, and carp/suckers in. The water's consistently 1-2 feet deep in most sections with deeper rocky pockets that get up to around 5 or 6 feet. I would fish from shore or wade. Any suggestions for a starter setup? I found a bundle of a 9 ft. 3-piece fly rod, a pre-spooled 5/6 wt. fly reel, and a 7-piece custom fly assortment for $60. Would this be a good purchase? also, what else is crucial for someone just getting into it? My grandpa used to fly fish some in his younger days so i would have some access to additional bait and a little instruction.

Go into a fly shop and get a decent fly box. Ask the guys working at the shop what the fish like to bite at in the area. They will give you a range of stuff, get a few of everything. Then get out there and have fun

On a semi-related note, does anyone have fishing trip suggestions for October-December? I just took a job that gives me that time off, and I'm trying to figure out what to do about it. I hung around MT and did the big brown thing all this fall (fishing every day does wonders for catching lots of big'ns), but am pretty interested in learning about salmon/steelhead.

Okay guys, I've been out before but I need to buy my own gear now. What should I get? I live in Pocatello Idaho, so I'll be fishing for mostly trout. I'll be fishing locally and taking trips to yellowstone, sawtooths, and just anywhere around here. I want something that collapses easily for camping and hiking.

I don't know what the fuck I'm doing, but I bought an 8' tenkara rod and think I got my casting motion pretty solid. I got a nibble yesterday so that was pretty dope.

I know most people aren't too keen on sharing their spots, but does anyone have favorite small streams near Bozeman. I've only tried lower hyalite creek and rocky creek so far
