Flag Burning

Taday at school I had to right a paper on whether or not people should be allowed to burn the American flag~even though i totally think that its wrong to i wrote that you should be allowed to because it techinally is legal to burn it.

Trying is the First Step to Failure.~Homer~

Burning the flag makes it easy for anyone to be a rebel. I mean, if you want to make a point, it should be harder to do. Say, like... it's okay to burn the flag.... as long as it's wrapped around your head.

I think that flag burning is pretty much teh most blantant protest. It can really only be interprited one way. It is definatly covered under free speach. I would say that insted of being a great thing to support in it self it more just represents free speach at it's best to me.

dude on CNN a long time ago there was a guy from the middle east burning the flag and his clothing and hair srted on fire!!! it was insane

I think it's ridiculous that people would think to make a law to ban flag burning. You'd be going against everything this country was founded on and against everything the founding fathers intended. It's one of our basic freedoms, the right to question or government and voice our displeasure, by flag burning if necessary.

Is the poopdeck really what I think it is?

Flag burning is, as Tay sid, 'The most blatent form of protest'. If you see someone burning a flag, i means only one thing. 'That they dislike the government. Also, making it against the law would make be unconstitutional.

allthough i'm for almost all forms of freedom without even thinking about it, this is somthing i'v had conflicted feelings on in the past. its kind of a cliche, because if you are free to do it, and you burn it, its disrespecting the very laws that give you the do it in the fist place. either way, i think that it should be allowed, because i think that in america you should be able to do whatever the fuck you want to do if your not hurting somone else. but personaly, i dont think i would ever do it unless possibly if it was outlawed, just to show that its unconstatutional.

i honestly dont get why people get all excited about the flag... its a colored piece of cloth. I hate how people consider you a patriot if you stick the thing on your car and garage and things of that sort... its a joke. It annoys me so much. I really think that is truly more patriotic or more like doing your duty to the country to question the government and protest the wrongs that are committed by it. A piece of cloth does not make you a true patriot and burning it does not make you rebel. Its your words, actions, and ideas that matter. Symbols are not what's important, people are what's important. I do think though that people should be allowed to burn the flag... especially now. The governments power is out of control. The federal government has complete control of everything. The fed controls the economy... our president can suspend the civil rights of thousands of people... he can also institute a government that could possibly take total control if a disaster were to occur... we are no longer a country of democracy... we merely have this facade, this outward image of democratic principles that is so false... we live in a two party system and each party is controlled by corporate america... the lines between these two parties are even starting to become blurred... i dunno im kinda ranting here but im fed up with all the crap

WJB couldnt be moe right. And yeah, just watch the drones say the pledge in te morning. it's sickening. They don't een know what they are saying. most of them are just standing there rambling sense-lessly.

Also, the pledge... THE PLEDGE OF Allegiance sort of disgusts me. You are drilled this saying since you were a little kid. You were forced to 'Pledge Allegiance' forever, to a ntion which you know nothing aout and take what you are told. Sorta sickening especially because thse little kids have perfect pronunciation of words that they don't have the faintest clue as to their meaning. Basically, i consider it a form of brainwashing.

Yeah WBJ got it pretty much exactly. And he's right about the pledge thing, we had a assembley at my school to honor way vetrins (this was after 9/11). And about half way though they told everyone to get up and say the pledge. Well this was at the time that the US was pretty much trying to blow all of teh middle east away so I stay down. I got some full on death threats after that...

yeah i got threatened after the attacks cause i refuse to do the pledge. I actually almost got suspended for not doing it... its so evil. My teacher even like tried refusing me to enter the class until i did the pledge. Luckily my parents are cool sometimes and got fully pissed off when i told them i was gonna lose credit for my fist period class cause i was being barred entry to the classroom.

You could have filed suit against them, because they were stripping your rights. In the constitution, it states that you do not hve to say teh pledge.

Yeah he could, but it really wouldn't have been worth it. It would be a power struggle untill it got to court then you would win teh ability to not say teh pledge, thats it. Like when they kicked me out of teh school band for my green hair (no warning or contract or anything), we threatened a suit, but it really would'nt have been worth the time and money to prove it wrong. I knew my rights were violated the whole student body knew, in my mind thats a win.

Yah, SKI2824 is pretty much right on with that statement. The political parties have very minor to no variation. Basically, there isno difference between Gore and Bush. May hate to har it, but they are both the same.

allthough i'm a libertarian i'm more of a republican than a democrat, but in the end if you never found out who won the election and no one ever told you you'd probaly never know the difference. except for my tax cut check :-D, and i defanitely feel a lot better having bush for a prez during the war, if we had a libertarian prez a third of our salaries wouldent go to taxes anyway, and we wouldent be in this war in the first place. allthought it was clinton's middle east polacys that got us into this in the first place :-D ok, end of my polatics rant. i'm burn out on arguing on contravercial things for tonight, i'm going to go smoke a bowl and try not to think about school in 8 hours from now :-)

If we had a libertarian prez, what would he do in response to Sept. 11?

Is the poopdeck really what I think it is?

And don't blame this on Clinton. Blame US mideast policy over the past 55 years.

Is the poopdeck really what I think it is?

I think every single one of you guys is right on, especially Tay and WJB. I was already getting kind of politically minded in fifth grade, and I just watched the other kids say the pledge of allegiance, and it seriously scared the shit out of me. Then I sat down and listened to my teacher talk about what a great guy Christopher Columbus was, and how he brought the Indians into the real world. Some seriously screwed up crap.

Another beef I have is the religious influence infiltrating our schools. There are way too many examples of this to even list here.

Also, for a good second perspective on America's history, read 'The People's History', by Howard Zinn. This book taught me a lot about what really happened in America's history.

haha, you know what/ If ther was a law passed on flag burning, everybody would have a reason to do it. Just a thought...

Is it really that serious if you guys don't say the pledge? Over here, I guess we do see Americans being very patriotic and that seems kinda strange for us. We don't have a pledge of alliegiance, and if we did it would probably have to be to Britain, coz they still technically 'own' us. It seems kind of strange to think that America is so pro-freedom and pro-free speech, but when you don't want to say the pledge you get kicked out of class! When we have assemblies at school the band plays the national anthem, but no one sings!

Does Canada have a pledge too? Coz you guys are still part of the Commonwealth, so I don't know!

No Sarah, here in Canada we're not heretic little puritants like those Yanks (jk). We don't have a pleade of alleigence either. But, we do have the national anthem every morning (in school eh), but nobody sings (prolly for the better).

We all should remember that the reason that you are allowed to burn the flag, the reason that you can refuse to say the pledge, the reason that you can protest peacefully, the reason that you can vote, and the reason that you can change things in government is.... yes, children, the U.S. of A. Regardless of our mistakes, this government is still the thing that makes it all possible. We all seem to get off by insisting that our government sucks; what is this going to do for you? If you really want to make a difference with something, quit bitching and DO it. If you hate the way corporate America has taken over the top tiers of governmental control, then go find your candidate against it and support him; or write a letter to your congressman, or better yet, get elected yourself. It pisses me off to hear people bitching about a system that allows them freedoms such as humans have never enjoyed before. In a lot of countries in the world many of you would be dead or in prison for the stuff you've said here. Respect your government, even if you have to deal with fuck-ups like Vietnam, the Middle East, corporations, and Bush, and work from the inside rather than the out.

*BOIOIOIOIOIOING*

Kami, just in response to you... I dunno, I feel the need to defend myslef. I totally agree with you, and I personally have done things to support and change some of the things wrong with the system. I do my best to support candidates who support change for the better... i did some grassroots campaign stuff for nader in the last election.... i dunno, a bunch of shit like that.

oh and the thing that pisses me off the most, people who bitch about the govnt then dont vote...
