ok, well the frame on the car is "tweeked" according to the michanic. i was also told by someone else that if it was just the strut tower, then they could un bend it and it would be fine. I hit the front left and it needs new sheet metal on the fender, hood, and a new bumper. also new front left suspension and new fan blade. total for labor and parts off a junkyard car: $2600

we only payed $5000 for the car initially becuase of high millage.

it is looking like we either get the car repaired, or we are looking at this:

http://www.cars.com/go/search/detai...21&aff=national

the michanic said he would give us $1000 for the car as-is.

the other thing is high miles on my e36. since i havnt had it a terribly long time, we dont know how much longer the engine will last...

that audi i linked to is very appealing to me becuase of the all wheel drive and it has lower millage and the engine is supposed to last forever. it is however slower and not rwd, and NOT A BMW!, as opposed to the e36. it has the 5 cylinder engine, which is said to make it to 300k miles with a bit of maintenence. I was also told by a guy who sells, works on and drives both Audis and BMWs says that Audis are generally cheaper to repair.

what do you guys think i should go for either getting that audi, or repairing my car?

all i kno is that both the bimmer and the audi cost a fucken ass load to repair... and on the audi u have to repair somethign called a time belt at around 100 miles and that cost 2000 bucks

hows a wrx on repairs there a pretty tough car to begin with so that would help bring down the cost

^HAHA a timing belt is not 2000 dollars dude, 200 at most. and what year is the audi. but i would say go with the audi no matter what year it is. if you tweeked the frame thats never gonna be the same. and if you put 2600 into that car then you engine dies you are gonna have a fucked up car already with no engine. quarttos are sweet too

it is a 1990:

and to the dude that mentioned timing belts, most all cars have them and need to be replaced at one time or another. and an audi is a solid automobile, but you tend to buy vehicles that are expensive to maintain. i have a vw and it is expensive and i can't afford that crap which is why i bought a manual and get my hands dirty.

-chris

haha yeah all cars have timing belts. the actual belt is only gonna be like 100 probably. but with an audi you might have to take the entire engine apart to put it in. cus german cars are weird like that. and that might cost a little bit more. but if i were you i would sell the bmw and save your money for a while and buy a cheaper car thats almost as fast. like a golf or a jetta. you could pick up like a fast 95 golf for around 5000.

that is actually expensive for a 95, golf or jetta. depending on the miles i could get a vr6 for that wround here

yeah you will find a good car but i wouldnt buy that audi. like a 99 with 140k miles isant bad but a 90 isnt. expecially in snow. i bet that thing is rusted to shit. you can get a better deal than that i think.

im in CO, cars DO NOT RUST HERE! ill have all expences payed for through collage so upkeep isnt a big issue, although if it gets expensive, i will need to find a new car. that is the deal i ahve with my grandparents.

yeah i dont think you would really have to worry about rust with an audi. but american cars are too cheap to rust proof them so the car just falls apart.but idk if that audi would be rust proofed or what ever cus my dads old 92 civic was and that was like a nice feature for the car at the time.

the audi is bad ass rally car if you turbo it but I know a couple kids with older audisand they have had some problems with them nothing major but it seems like they are always fixing shit.

ya, and vws, window switches, window switches, window switches...

yeah thats true. my dad actaully works at an autoglass shop and i worked there all summer. idk if its all vws but i know all jettas have like a pully system that the motor uses to get the window up . but almost all other cars have like 2 metal pieces that are in an x and move up and down.idk how to explain it. but i think the pully thing for vw's wears out the motor so you always have to get em fixed. but you dont even have to fix that you can just push the window up and down with yer hands as long as it stays up.

window switches are a huge known problem for vws and audis. and alot fo other electronic interior switches too...

yeah german cars are fucking weird. and its usually not the switch its either the motor or the regulator(the thing that moves the window up and down)but if its just the switch that wouldnt cost much and you could easily do that yerself. yeah but yeah electronics are so weird in german cars. i remember this lady couldnt pay for a new regulator so we just like got the window to stay up and unplugged the switch so no one would try to put it down and have the window open til she got the money. but when we unplugged that one switch none of the other windows would go down.and when we plugged it in they worked again.

didnt you just get that car like...a month or two ago? Sucks. Go with the Audi.

i just got a 2000 audi a6 quattro - it has twin turbo, its freakin sick... if i was you i would go with like a 97' a4

dont get the 1990 20v... we had one and it gave us mad problems and it isn't even nearly as refined as the newer ones. go with audi and get a a4

I have a 93 audi s100 and its a bad ass car... it doesn't look sweet since its aged, but its still really nice and has that luxury look. It has 198K miles and I've been driving it since 188K miles, and I've never had one problem with it. Audis are definitely reliable, but aren't that cheap to fix if they do break. Its not really fast anymore, but can cruise nicely at really high speeds, like i've drivin on the highway for 45 minutes going 130mph and it felt like 75mph. My child lock window switch broke tho, so you can't open the back windows.

i have a 91 325i and i love it..i wont get another car until this one dies and hopefully itll last me forever

cool everybody

yeah, audi's have that timing belt thing, i know people who have gotten that fixed a few times. consumer reports says that audi's are really sketch to buy used so i definitely wouldn't get one. how is the BMW in the snow, cause i'm thinking about getting a 325xi

*Laura*

trevorwoulddo...-But it makes perfect sense, one american dollar up here is like... an escalade with 24 inch rims and strippers on the roof.

get the audi bro. its much better. plus its an AWD and you will need that in winter since you live in CO

325ix is a kickass car. mine is jsut rwd so its not great in the snow, but it does have tractoin control. make sure you get the all wheel drive system checked out before you buy the 325ix, but if its good, that that will be a great buy.

my michanic says it is definatly worht fixing the e36. he said it is jsut the front of the frame and not the side so it wont mess up the whole car. he has a really expeirenced guy do the frame streightening, and he said that it is not severe enough to trash the car. that is just what he said, and he would probably make more money if we sold the car to him as-is for $1000 and he fixed it and sold it....

that being said, im still really unsure as to what to do. on the one hand, this guy, and some other guys have told me that it is worth fixing becuase it really isnt that bad. it is a unibody and it wasnt a side hit. the michanic says he can get it fixed and it would drive jsut the way it used to. on the other hand, i have all you random internet guys saying that its totally not worth it and i should jsut get a new car. im really not sure what to do, although at this point if what the michanic says is true, im leaning twords fixing my e36. the michanic said that if i sold it to him as-is for $1000 he would fix it and sell it...

yeah vws have shit window regulators, but that is why i drive a basic ass golf with manual windows, a manual transmission, no air, no airbags. less shit to fix and it was all i coiuld afford

-chris

is a huge fan of bimmers Id say keep itand when their working on it through a bit more money down and get the frame stiffened it makes your car handle so much better its amasing how much better it feels I know it was pretty cheap when we did it to my freinds car but we also did the labor our selves
